The food was excellent - we very much enjoyed our meals. The staff were friendly and helpful. Lovely spa and I had an excellent back massage.

No lift to the bedrooms and no offer of help with luggage - my husband had experienced some heart problems the previous week so that would have been helpful but we managed. Bathroom had a very odd toilet roll holder which didn't hold a toilet roll so we put it on the floor. Some tissues and a shower hat would have been nice - I was surprised they were not offered. Service for our second evening meal was very slow (an hour) the waitresses were doing their best but it would have been good if they had come and explained that there was only one chef and a trainee.

The hotel itself is great, the staff generally very helpful, and the food exceptionally nice - having breakfast cooked to order meant it was piping hot and fresh for example. Spa facilities were good too, although the steam room unfortunately wasn’t steaming, but the (3) treatments we had were really wonderful. The extensive grounds looked lovely too, but as we were there during storm Amy, we chose not to explore them.

The only thing that really let the hotel down was the location of our “Family double room” at the far point from the reception area, up some stairs at the end of a corridor. Not the best location when you have mobility limitations. The ‘view’ was a big let down, being of the back of a generator or air conditioning unit, which meant having the window open also wasn’t possible or advisable. Additionally note that there is no lift and the shower is a step in bath which has a curved bottom. Again not ideal, if fact a SIGNIFICANT hazard if you have mobility issues. I strongly advise you avoid room 35 and ask about the details of your room if any of these issues are important to you.

Standing in large grounds, including a woodland habitat for red squirrels (although sadly we didn't manage to see any), Tre-ysgawen is a beautifully maintained/restored 175-year old country house but with all modern amenities. We had a gorgeous, huge four-poster room in the main house, furnished entirely in keeping with the age and style of the house, but with an enormous modern bathroom complete with double-sized bath. Excellent food (I recommend the Welsh lamb chops), and really helpful and friendly service. Great spa with a large pool and fully equipped gym.

No lift to the upper floors but a big shout-out to the multi-talented, multi-tasking Spencer who was happy to run up and down stairs with heavy suitcases while also manning the bar and serving in the restaurant. And as is to be expected with a house of this age, a number of trivial imperfections which generally just served to enhance the ambiance.

The staff of any business are key to the success of that business; the staff at Tre-ysgawen, without fault were amazing. The cleanliness of the hotel was exceptional and the pool and spa centre was fab.

* The coffee at breakfast was really bad. Weak and tasteless - this really needs improving! * The lighting in public areas, especially the bars and library needs addressing, overhead lights were on with a couple of side lamps, which means it wasn’t relaxing, better to invest in more lamps and lightbulbs for the picture lamps so that it feels cosy, especially in the library.

The general presentation and experience were all very good and offered very good value for money, especially the breakfast! Room with terrace was comfortable and well presented (generally). Spa was well maintained and easily accessible. The restaurant is very nice and the food was delicious, the staff waiting-on were excellent!

Some aspects of room cleanliness were disappointing. The tray with mugs and complimentary tea/coffee was dirty on arrival. Stayed 3 nights and after the first night, returned after housekeeping had ‘cleaned’ the room however the bed was not made, and the floor had not been vacuumed…the following day was much better however still not sure if vacuumed during our stay. Room was comfortable but only doors to terrace and no window for nighttime ventilation - the room was very hot and if the fan had not been provided, would have been very uncomfortable at night!

The pool was big and the facilities very clean. Times allotted for children so I could enjoy a relaxing swim at alternative times. The roast dinner was sublime. I had two cooked breakfasts. Again both sublime! I intend to bring my sister and niece here for a spa weekend soon. The grounds were interesting to explore. The decor too. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and will be back soon. The staff very friendly. I was there for two days and absolutely enjoyed my stay. Thankyou to all the staff. This is an exquisite hotel and the history and paintings.....so much to appreciate.

That I wasn't staying for longer.

I love the old building. The staff were really friendly. The room was clean. Loved the pool and sauna.

We went out to visit a friend and came back about midnight and the doors to hotel were locked. No one responded to the bell. Thankfully two men were leaving and let us in. I have no idea what would have happened if they hadnt come. There did not appear to be a night porter. We were not informed of this at check in. We did not eat there, the reviews had been off putting. Also breakfast coukd be found for half the price in tbe towns. Nothing is more than half an hours drive away. Our room was right by tbe clock tower and very annoyingly the vlick chimed loudly ftom 7am to 11pm every half hour. Bizarrely, our bed had a bedside lamp each side but only one side had a socket to plug it in. So the other side was not functional just for show.

The rural setting was lovely and picturesque, the spa was good and not too crowded, and the different rooms like the library were really interesting. The bedroom and bathroom were a really good size too. The staff were really friendly and welcoming.

Nothing I didn’t like. Just a little discrepancy between the email and staff re using the spa facilities after checkout. The email states we are free to use after checkout and doesn’t stipulate a timeframe of when we would need to vacate, but told by staff on the day that it was only till 12 midday with a charge thereafter.

Location was great, nice & quiet, staff lovely, helpful, we had a large room which could’ve easily fitted a larger double, room & bathroom dated but everything clean, We stayed when it was over 25c heat so room very warm but there was a small fan Use of the spa was fab, nice size pool, great temp too. Food lovely at breakfast & in the restaurant at night, nice selection, good portion sizes. A nice relaxing 2night break, will be back next year but will look to book a larger room

Nothing, I would imagine there will be ongoing improvements to rooms and areas throughout to bring it into a modern era but keeping the charm.

Stunning grounds and location. Fantastic food and spa facilities. Clean and comfy bedroom. Pleasant and friendly restaurant staff who couldn’t do enough for you.

When we visited the Clock Tower Bar, there was a table of 16 with dirty plates and glasses left well over an hour. Dirty afternoon tea plates and wine glasses left out for at least an hour. There was only 4 people in the bar and the bar was well staffed so not sure they didn’t tidy up after guests have left. Toilets near main reception regularly left dirty and not cleaned/ regularly checked. When we first arrived we waited 5 minutes to be checked in with no other staff not knowing how to check in. Left regularly unmanned.
