The room was spacious, comfortable, and airy with a lovely ralaxing ambience. All the staff were very pleasant and friendly and took the time out of their busy schedules to ensure that things were as we expected them to be and to make sure we had everything we needed for our lovely short stay. My partner and I also had breakfast on a couple of days, and being a chef myself with over 37 years of experience, I can honestly say that all the breakfast items that we chose were served hot, cooked to perfection, presented well and tasted fresh with good quality ingredients.

Although I have already mentioned the rooms' ambient lighting, my partner commented on that the room could do with at least one bright light.

staff team very great. friendly and helpful , excelent breakfasts , good size room. loved the private patio, nice bathroom , convenient car park, nice outside seating . we had lunch there which was very nice , a draft non alcoholic IPA was very good !

A minor issue but the coffee in room was a cafetiere, nice but impractical with no kitchen to clean it, milk provided in a flask which exploded milk every time it was opened! ( staff did produce mini bottles on second day but then keeping cool was a challenge) . A good brand instant would have been easier and some long life milk sachets . ( but please not the nescafe sachets beloved of many hotel chains! )

Warm welcome from the 2 staff members when we arrived. shown to our room and on request provided with more bottled water, fresh milk, and good tea bags to make afternoon tea. Room large with wonderful views over the countryside. The bed very comfortable. slight lack of furniture - found a suitcase carrier in the cupboard - should be out to use immediately, no dressing table which would be useful. Bathroom large and spacious. Dinner was excellent - lovely table in the window - service by Elouise was friendly and very efficient, the food delicious. Good choice of non alcholic drinks (beers) which we appreciated.

Previous reviews mentioned the road noise and on the warm day the window needed to be open so the car noise was very obvious. When the secondary glazing was used it did help but lack of fresh air then. Breakfast was impressive on the menu but was a bit too clever - simple ingredients for cereal/muesli/fruit/yoghurt should be available to order in any combination - lack of choice and all too sweet. One was at the whim of the chef apparently as to what was available. Cooked breakfast was good

We felt like the staff working that night went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and accommodate us. We got a phone call on the way to the hotel to tell us about food times, just so we knew if we needed to stop off for food before we got there. However, we just made it minutes before the kitchen closed, but it was no trouble. we had the most tastiest chips! The bar staff were very friendly in the evening. This is a stop we will be making again. Room was exactly what we needed, no complaints.

Nope liked everything

All of the staff were fantastic. Breakfast was excellent as was dinner. We had a downstairs bedroom with a fenced patio area which was nice to sit in as the weather was good. Bathroom had been recently refurbed including good shower. Good sized bedroom with comfortable king-sized bed. Great location for visits to Highclere and Basildon Park etc.

The bedroom is tired, needing redecoration which is apparently due at the beginning of 2026. The outside of the accommodation also needs a refurb, but don't get put off by this.

Lovely welcoming staff and dog friendly which was fab. Also very good at catering for my dairy intolerance - they had a clear menu that showed what I could and couldn’t have. Nothing felt like too much trouble. The breakfast was delicious! And they cooked a couple of sausages for my pooch. Would definitely stay again

Dog friendly which was amazing… nothing wrong with the property at all. One tiny comment - which is just feedback - we recently stayed at The Duke of Burford and they had a welcome pack for my pooch including a water bowl for the room. Obviously not a major issue(!) - just felt like it could be a small bit nice touch here too

A very friendly welcome. Our room was huge with a very comfortable bed and a big, deep bath which was lovely. Both of our breakfasts were delicious! Very accommodating with dietary requirements. The gluten free bread was really yummy! We had an evening meal here and the food was incredible. The chocolate mousse is a must! Along with some yummy seasonal cocktails. Unexpectedly, there was a Jazz band playing and they were amazing. They were fascinating to watch and played a variation of songs including ones we all knew. It felt like a private concert! And,of course, not forgetting the super lovely pub dog which made my day. Thanks for a fabulous time, we would definitely come to stay/ eat here again.

Nothing to dislike about our experience!

Interesting hotel. Nice rural location, with pleasant grounds, extensive free parking. Friendly helpful staff. Some issues with bathroom plumbing, which were noted and hopefully fixed for the next guests. The steep narrow external stairs to access our room were a challenge with bags, and would prohibitively challenging for less able guests. Noise was an issue early on the first morning, seemed to be early bin collection, and what appeared to be inconsiderate guests with large barking dogs early in the morning. Overall a good experience, but could be improved by the absence of the aforementioned. Good cooked breakfast, with individual requirement kindly fulfilled. Excellent coffee on first morning, strangely not so on second morning. Nice restaurant.

Bathroom very small. Plumbing for sink in bathroom not actually sealed! Opening the ‘plug’ resulted in a flooded bathroom, and shower unit not sealed, resulting in more leaks. Noisy bins banging at 6am! accompanied by barking dogs! Lunch was ok, nice restaurant with nice countryside view (outside seating also available) but would have been better if salting left to consumer, far too much salt on chips pre-salted by chef! Staff seemed ‘busy’, so completing one job at a time is usually best, and good idea to ensure the waiter knows what food is being served each day. Rustic bathroom decor is an acquired taste. The lighting in the bedroom extremely poor, and in bathroom was very poor, woefully inadequate, and ‘illuminated’ mirror didn’t.

This was an absolutely amazing pub with rooms. As soon as we entered, we were greeted warmly and immediately shown to our rooms, which were beautifully decorated, very well furnished and extremely comfortable. We were even given a little flask with fresh milk to be able to make a drink in our room. We returned to the bar and I have to say, the cocktails were fabulous. It was such a lovely warm relaxed failing in the bar that we felt very much at home. We went out for the evening and returned once again to spend a couple of hours in the bar. We had a fabulous night’s sleep in an extremely comfortable bed and breakfast in the morning was again, superb. We would have no hesitation in staying at this pub again and look forward to returning sometime in the very near future.

There was nothing to dislike.

The room was beautiful. The bed was amazingly comfortable! Both myself and my wife suffer from poor sleep if the beds are not comfortable - the bed was so comfortable that we sleet so comfortably that we awoke after both our alarms were going off!! The restaurant is worth a particular mention!! The food and wine list are impressive and incredibly tasty! Even the alcohol free beer is delicious and tastes better than the prime IPA!! The staff are all very helpful and polite.

It is not closer!!
