The County Hotel is in the town of Selkirk, which is a convenient base for exploring the Borders area. It is especially good if you're planning to visit Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott, which is less than 5 miles away. There are a few historic places of interest to visit in Selkirk itself within a short walk from the hotel.

The County is a self check-in hotel, the door codes worked etc so that was fine, but it's a less welcoming process and I guess it helps keep their prices reasonable. Selkirk is fairly quiet, so if you're looking for a bit more of a livelier place to stay then Galashiels might suit. Melrose also looked nice.

Beautiful scrambled eggs. Comfy bed, fluffy towels, good biscuits, wonderfully quirky building. Getting in was a bit Dungeons and Dragons- I arrived after eleven by starlight, and the keypad wasn’t that immediately obvious. Even once I was in, having got one digit wrong (butterfingers), I heard a lugubrious “Operation failed” thrice. But once I was actually in the room- lovely, as was breakfast and the man who served me it- told me about the curfew, and the Ettrick wolves, I wished that I was on holiday and could explore. Really liked it, spooky but comfy.

Just getting in with the keypad. It wasn’t hard, but it wasn’t intuitive either, and after waiting half an hour at Tweedbank for a taxi, I wanted bed.

Great location and the staff were super friendly. Inexpensive. We were able to eat dinner in the bar/restaurant downstairs which was good value for money. The room was clean and well equipped and check-in was straightforward. Breakfast (booked as part of the room package) was lovely too, perfect poached eggs and a good selection of cereals etc. There was an electrical issue with the socket and the small/bedside lamp, which the staff did say they would look into after we reported it to them, which is encouraging.

The shower only worked on eco mode which was very low pressure, we had hiked in from Hawick and so a more powerful shower would have been good!

The room was lovely, equipped with everything I needed, and a view over the town square. It was one of the best beds I’ve slept in - was so comfortable. There was ample choice at breakfast, and food was well-cooked. It sets you up for the day! Staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. When I mentioned that I had left my phone charger behind in the previous hotel in Edinburgh, they found me one to borrow for the duration of my stay at the County. The location is great. In the middle of Selkirk, you are spoilt for choice of coffee shops, the pub, a cocktail bar, an Indian restaurant, a Chinese restaurant and a Fish and Chip and Pizza takeaway. There is a museum and Scott’s Courthouse a couple of minutes walk from the hotel. There is a regular bus service just opposite The County to the larger town of Galashiels - if you want to venture further, you can get a train from Galashiels and take a day trip to Edinburgh, enjoying the lovely Borders countryside as you do.

There was nothing I didn’t like about staying here!

The staff were lovely and welcoming. Checkin was easy. Just follow the instructions they send in the confirmation email. The food was basic but well cooked and ample for us. The room was clean, comfortable and adequate for our one night stay travelling through. Free parking at the rear of the hotel was good. We had dinner and breakfast here.

We had a cold shower in the morning. Couldn’t seem to get the hot water working. It may have been something we did but we didn’t see the owners to let them know.

room was really clean, comfortable bed, check in was easy, staff really nice. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. We had a meal in the evening which was lovely.

Bar area was nice but chairs were all needing reupholstered. Our room had a lamp attached to side of dressing table, take it away, looks silly The front door is really narrow and not much room between it and the inner door, really awkward for getting in with suitcases.

Breakfast was good and extras, (extra hash brown, toast and egg) were not even charged for. Our group of 8 had an evening meal and all of them were excellent, and well priced. Great service too. Again, generally a large ish group of us found space in a bright, breezy, quiet and comfortable lounge. Great drinks prices too, compared to London. Free parking immediately out in the back yard. Perfect.

Oliver, who was on reception when I arrived and served me breakfast was friendly and obliging and created a very relaxed atmosphere. The breakfasts were well cooked and presented. Absolutely nothing to complain about!

The County doesn't do evening meals and there is apparently a dearth of places to eat in the evening in Selkirk. They compensate for this by providing facilities in a lounge area for guests to bring in food from the various takeaways nearby and there is actually one very good little restaurant right next door! The food there was very good and not expensive for the quality. I had 2 courses and a large glass of wine for £30 including a tip.

Twin beds were the most comfortable we have had for many a year! (Friend agreed!) Room 23, FYI... Excellent facilities! We were SO happy to be there in Selkirk on the Main High Street with parking behind! Easy access to restaurants, and we recommend the Chinese! Breakfast with Oliver was a delicious one! We hope to return sometime! Emily

A very minor suggestion- some fruit for breakfast would have been good for us. Apart from this, nothing at all!

Self check in was easy and fuss free. The room was clean and well appointed. With self check in there is no contact with reception staff, however the restaurant staff were very warm and welcoming. Breakfast was good. We have stayed at this hotel many times under different owners. It may have lost some of its old world charm, but is still worth a stay.
