We slept well on a comfortable bed (once we'd got some help on the cooling system!). The room was smartly decorated and very clean. We had a good breakfast, including vegan sausages especially prepared for us. The staff were very attentive, welcoming and good at communicating. The reception area was very nice with comfortable seating.

It would be good to know when there weren't any children's swimming lessons going on in the pool or to have adults only times scheduled. Google maps directed us along a bit of the dual carriageway that didn't have a path for pedestrians, so it would be good to be sent advice on the best way to walk to the hotel. (We discovered the right route later!) The walkway from the canal is quite dark with no lighting so is currently not very safe for a lone traveller. The walls were very thin: we could hear our neighbours cough.

The breakfast was very good with plenty of choice and as I walk with a stick the staff went out of their way to help me carry things. I also opted to have some evening meals in the hotel and they were very good as well. Overall the staff were very helpful and friendly.

Personally speaking I think the hotel chain should consider walk-in showers or wet room in the disabled bedrooms. Climbing over the side of the bath to take a shower when you are travelling on your own and have a disability is not an option. Baths that have a door in the side might also be worth considering. A firmer mattress on the bed would have been good as I struggled to get out of it - too comfortable and squashy - not conducive for arthritis suffers.

The receptionist was wonderful. Warm, welcoming, efficient at all aspects of her job, including organising a swift lift repair and satisfactory customer complaint. She had an excellent professional manner and really ‘sold’ St Helens to us, recommending places to visit locally and great food in the bar. She also referred back to previous conversation, when we locked ourselves out of the room, offering to bring a key up to us, so we weren’t inconvenienced or made an unnecessary trip to reception. Bar staff equally good, recommending food and suggesting drinks. Nachos for dinner recommended, exceeded expectations. Breakfast was good, traditional but tastes good. All day staff clean, well presented, thoughtful and polite. The room 203 desperately needs painting finished. Bed extra comfy - next time I share with a mate, I’ll get the twin room, otherwise very impressed with St Helens the town, surrounding countryside, location and ease to find the hotel and a super stay!! Not at all judgemental, just Not what I expected and we had a fabulous time. Hopefully we will be back.

The staff were super friendly and helpful, they made it a joy to stay at this hotel. It is so nice to stay somewhere where you feel at home. I stay in a lot of hotels, so I think I am pretty qualified to know what good looks like! These guys have it nailed when it comes to customer service - well done to everyone on the staff.

I made an error when booking and was not allowed to move to the other Mercure up the road. When I phoned the hotel it was a 'computer says no'. To be frank, this really annoyed me so wasn't really looking forward to staying here. Mercure - you are very lucky that the staff at this hotel saved you. To staying guests they are super, but what happened with the booking experience? This would have been a 1/10 if they had not rescued it during my stay. My room was not spectacularly clean, especially around the skirting boards and lots of dust and marks on the desk, a little bit more attention to detail needed.

Comfy bed, late check out, huge rooms, storage, small but effective bathtub, fridge (not mini bar) in room was a bonus gentle warm lighting in headboard is a genius design and better hygienically too ..was a lovely way to wake up.

My shower seal needed replacing as kept leaking water..just a minor issue..a few design flaws are all I can specify...e.g lots of hangers and space but when using them...doesn't stick out wide enough to accommodate your clothes properly so they are on an angle. Also the pressure of the water in the sink and bath is so powerful that it can blast out and go all over the place even if careful. Again very hard to find fault with anything. For me the location was not as ideal as a solo traveller without car but that is quite irrelevant to how good my nights sleep was etc would stay again

Lovely reception area and a friendly welcome. Room was spacious and clean and well equipped. Welcoming bar and restaurant area. Good selection at breakfast and the bar menu was excellent- we ate there both nights and were very happy with our choices. Great service too. Pool staff very helpful and the leisure area was well maintained. Good location, just minutes away from the train station where we hopped on a train for Liverpool. Nice canal walk nearby too.

Room was perhaps a little dated, but that's all.

Very modern & clean

We asked reception to order us a taxi to return from concert before we left & was told this would be done & meet in same place as we were dropped off. We waited 45 mins then rang hotel To be told that they could not get us a taxi would be easier if we try. Think this was poor communication as we then spent another 45 mins trying to get back to hotel. Had we had this information from Hotel earlier we would not have waited 45 mins before trying to find transport

rooms were spotlessly clean,comfortable and really nice comfy beds.Spa was really good,great jacuzzi, sauna and steam room and good sized pool.we had a few drinks in the hotel bar and Victoria was great,really friendly and helpful, also we had breakfast on the Saturday morning before we went to the races which was really nice,great hotel and friendly staff

nothing to dislike, had a great time here,3rd time we've stayed and we've never had a cause for complaint,,maybe if the hotel had sky sports for the football, but they only have tnt sports i think

The location of the hotel is central to the shops and other St Helens tourist attractions e.g. World of Glass. I couldn't fault the service and the food was good. The staff were very attentive and helpful. The bathroom was well appointed and suitable for disabled guests with assistance pull cords and grab rails if needed.

Although the bed was very comfortable, I had difficulty getting in and out of it if I needed to use the bathroom in the night as I have arthritis so a slightly firmer mattress would possibly have been better. I didn't like the fact that the shower was over the bath. Even though it was a low bath, for a person on their own with arthritis or any other disability it was difficult to get in and out of. So saying I knew the shower would be over the bath when I booked my accommodation.

The room was fine – clean and in good condition. Having access to the pool and sauna is a great bonus and really adds to the stay. There’s also an interesting glass museum nearby that’s worth visiting. The staff were generally fine, but the lady working during breakfast was especially friendly and very helpful. Breakfast itself is quite basic, but it’s tasty and perfectly good.

One of the electrical sockets in the room was damaged, with wires sticking out, which felt a bit unsafe.
