We chose The Vanguard for 2 nights because it was a great location for us, comfortable walking distance into the city centre but offered easy access out of the city for the half an hour drive to Howsham we had for work. Also around the corner is a traditional café doing delicious full english type breakfasts - Goodfillers - which was the perfect start to our long working day. It's a residential area so largely very quiet, you don't seem to hear anything around you, bar just one point in the night when some students in the house opposite got a bit loud but it then died down pretty quickly. We arranged to park on the drive easily and the self-check in instructions were clear, although the main front door lock wasn't working so you could technically just walk into the building. The stairs were quite steep up to our room which could be an issue for someone with mobility issues, but fine for us. The room was absolutely spotlessly clean and the bed very comfortable. Bathroom products were good and we really appreciated the youtube video link for the coffee machine! Really appreciate a proper machine rather than just instant. We had a free upgrade through genius and so had the deluxe room, which meant we had a good amount of room for all our stuff which was great. All in all it was a very comfortable stay and we would definitely stay again.

The only glitch was that we found the digital heating system odd, there was seemingly no setting for heat only cooling, and so we were a bit chilly in the room overnight particularly on the first night. We had been out for dinner and didn't get back to the room until almost 10pm, so we felt it was too late to contact the owner, but we appreciate that was our decision. The next day I received a check-in message from the owner so they likely would have answered. Maybe a youtube video could be created for the heating settings too?

It was clean, and the shower and bathroom were a great size. Tea and coffee supplied with a kettle also with a small fridge which is a great touch. Easy access into the house and your room, using a card entry system similar to what you would find in most hotels. Comfy bed and was very quiet through the night on our stay which was a Saturday night and fully booked. I would suggest using the car parking booking system that's offered as it's a lot cheaper than the car parks around York.

Not much to say about anything not to like. Apart from a steep staircase but looks like a room is available downstairs, so if that's an issue for you ask for the ground floor room.

I recently stayed at The Vanguard in York and had a fantastic experience overall. While there was a small hiccup with the check-in process initially, I was very impressed with how quickly and professionally it was handled. The hosts responded immediately, resolved the issue without delay, and ensured I was comfortable and well-informed throughout. The apartment itself was spotless, beautifully furnished, and in a great location—quiet but within easy reach of the city centre. The space felt modern, warm, and welcoming, with everything I needed for a relaxing stay. What stood out the most was the excellent communication. The team was attentive, friendly, and easy to reach, which really made a difference. Highly recommend The Vanguard to anyone visiting York, and I’ll definitely be booking again on my next trip.

The room was impecable, they left for us some tea and coffee and a sweet treat which I thought it was a nice detail. Directions and indications to enter the room and building were super easy and clear. We asked for late check out at 1 pm, it only costed us 6£ more which we thought was cheap. Bathroom fully equipped with anything you need to shower and also hand soap. The bed was super comfy and clean, the room had netflix and other services installed so that was also a nice touch. It is a bit far the city center (15 min walking) but that made it better for us because it was a very calm and quiet area but also close enough to do everything by foot. The hosts were very communicative and nice. Overall a Great experience, highly recommend!

Bathroom, shower and hot water were all really excellent. Very well set up. Shower pressure was fabulous. Bed was very comfortable.

The (approximately 20) stairs up to the room (4) from the front door were very steep and narrow. We realise this is typical of these older buildings but wish we had known when booking. We are in our 70's and found the stairs extremely difficult to negotiate if you have large sized luggage. While the room was comfortable, we did feel cramped as there was very little room to put bags, out of the way. Otherwise a lovely little room.

Simple and luxurious, like a hotel room but in a homely place. Very comfortable bed and sheets. Gorgeous bathroom with lovely spacious shower. Nice to have Netflix. Nice and quiet. Lovely and clean. Loved the mini fridge with glass bottle water :) Loved the ease of check in and check out , so we could be flexible about arrival . Liked the key card to activate the electricity, very eco :)

Would prefer a non plastic coffee maker, kettle and not plastic pods etc ,but it was very nice and most people are fine with plastic. We normally get a kitchenette so I missed having a sink etc for that, however we knew that before booking, we knew we would eat out and most people eat out when away.

Wonderfully clean comfortable room and super comfy bed. The bathroom was really luxurious - loved the decor, the shower, the built in shelf in the shower and the clever lighting. The toiletries smelled wonderful! It was amazing to have air conditioning in the room during this hot spell. The host got in touch to check if we needed anything which was really nice. It was well worth requesting a parking space at the property even though it cost a bit extra. Thank you!

The location was fantastic to be able to park (assisted by the managers for a permit) and walk into York centre. Very comfy bed, air and blackout curtains, small fridge helped us a lot, big strong walk in shower best one in a week of travelling. Really good coffee machine and cool water, biscuits made a nice treat. Iron and mini board available (shared). Clear instructions about access and departure.

We had room 1 and the large sink in the bathroom is nice but set a bit high, that sounds picky especially when the shower is so good. Just that I’m short enough to have used the kiddie step stool (provided!) ! Overall no issues and likes the local location just out of town centre. Very walkable to the Shambles.

We stayed for one night on a quick couples trip to York. The room was lovely, really exceptionally clean and nicely decorated, very cosy, and comfortable. The bathroom was bigger than we expected and was clean with a big bright mirror, great for doing makeup. The big shower was a bit luxurious with shampoo, body wash and conditioner provided. Mini fridge was an actually useful size and there was plenty of space for luggage around the bed. Tea and coffee making facilities were above average with a Nespresso machine and kettle. The check-in process was really easy with all the instructions being sent via WhatsApp. I communicated with Karma about the parking and payment which was also nice and easy. Getting the parking was a great options, glad we took it. It was less than 15 minutes walk to York centre and an Uber back only cost about £5. We slept really well in the comfy bed and didn't hear a peep from any other guests. All in all a really lovely stay and if we come back to York as a couple we will definitely stay here again.

The rooms were well presented and very comfortable, the bed especially! The shower was excellent and there was a good range of complimentary tea and coffee in the room. Lovely quiet area down a pretty residential street, a 10-15 minute walk to the edge of town. The host communicated well over whatsapp and email in advance so was very clear how to get in/access the property and parking.

We had no problem with anything in the rooms, access was easy - just maybe a bit expensive for a room.
