The Great Sothern is located in a great spot. Close transport to get you to other places. The room was clean, quiet and roomy. The onsite pub and restaurant were great.

I love the Art Deco theme. The location is perfect for a traveller using public transport. It is an easy 2 block walk away from Central Railway Station, and is a 1 block walk away from the Sydney Light Rail system The staff, as always, were friendly and accommodating. As an old Age Pensioner, I also appreciate the cost … not overpriced
This stay ( and I’ve lost count as to how many times I’ve stayed here over the past 20 years) I was given one of the smaller rooms … and in this room, the shower wasn’t great (unlike other stays, in other rooms) … it had fluctuating temperatures … either too hot, or too cold

The location is excellent, close to the rail station and several malls and restaurants, and within easy walking distance of Darling Harbour. The staff are helpful and courteous, check-in no problem. The room itself is very spacious and well-equipped, with plenty of electrical power points. Wi-fi is good. The air-conditioning is effective, if a bit slow to cool down the room after entering it as it switches off when you leave.
The hotel does show its age, the corridor carpet is dilapidated and our bathroom fittings needed maintenance. The breakfast options are very limited and we didn't try them.

We traveled from Ohio. We were in Australia for 30 days. Quickly we figured out the transit system and made our way around like a couple of locals. We could not believe how cheaply we traveled around. We could catch the tram to everywhere. The tram was right outside the GSH. PERFECT location. We were pleasantly surprised and impressed by this hotel. It was a perfect temperature, a perfect bed and the bathroom was perfect, too. It was very safe and quiet. We enjoyed the room, the restaurant, the perfect location and more. Bonus with a safe in the room. We were surprised the hotel allowed smoking. We could barely smell it when we walked down the hallway on the second floor. Barely! Kareena and Sujan helped us print items we needed for our cruise. We were very grateful.
Can’t think of a thing.

Hotel is in a great location, close to lots of amenities that you require that were within a short walk. Room was great and bed comfortable. Close to transport both train, bus and light rail within a very short walk of your hotel which was fantastic.
As I was travelling on my own, I relied on the TV for some entertainment at night. I found that a lot of what was on the TV was repeated and on some channels the programs were of old content (ie Insight was an old program that I had seen at home before coming to Sydney) throughout my eight day stay. It would be so much more beneficial if 7+, 9Now, Iview and SBS on Demand which are free to air TV was available instead of what was shown on the TV so that there was a better choice of entertainment available especially for someone travelling on their own.

Excellent location – very close to all the forms of public transport and to a wide variety of dining options (especially in China Town and Thai Town). We didn't find that part of the CBD to be particularly charming, but it was very easy to get from there to places that are. The room was clean, pleasant and comfortable. We loved the architecture of the building and the vintage fixtures, especially the wood panelling and the vintage radio and telephone in the reception area.
There wasn't really anything that we didn't like. The pub downstairs wasn't very charming or atmospheric but we didn't think that it was really part of the hotel as such, and there are plenty of pubs all around the CBD, if you're looking for one.

My second time staying here. Staff are lovely, attentive and helpful. Location is almost unbeatable for a hotel this price. It is immaculately clean, and ultimately very comfortable. Staff were able to accomodate a slightly earlier check-in which was thoroughly appreciated after a long day travelling.
Not much. Sure, the furnishings are a little bit outdated but everything is completely functional and clean. The bathroom amenities (soap and shampoo) were very small. They were topped up each day, but perhaps a more suitable solution could be to install refillable bottles of liquid soaps attached to the walls? Honestly, can’t think of much else.

The Great Southern Hotel : A charming hotel which blends the new with the old .. A nostalgia, retro appearance both from the exterior of the property to the interior of the property .. Loved looking at all the photos on display from the past century of events held at The Great Southern .. If you want a taste of Sydney from a by-gone era then this hotel is for you .. Fascinating and Wonderful .. Loved every minute of my stay here .. All the staff are lovely and approachable too .. I cannot praise this hotel high enough .. It’s a win, win, win .. Plus Factors : Local transport literally outside the building .. Ease of access to and from the harbour front (via tram) and also to the airport (via tram / train) ..

When I asked staff for support 2-3 times they were so quick to respond with a smile and efficiently. When ready for return home via the Sydney airport staff Kareena immediately offered support for my travel by an explanation then followed up by making that arrangement for me. When taxi arrived Kareena helped by wheeling my case to the taxi.
Just on my arrival the room was disgustingly unclean. The young smart male staff came immediately to my room took photos made a report apologising and found me another room to my relief and satisfaction.

Had a lovely quiet room. But I couldn’t find the switch for the bathroom fan, sorry. Loved all the retro furnishings at the reception area, and the two styles of brekky zones, I didn’t have to elbow any sausage folk. And the cash register there WORKS! Cha-Ching!
I could have walked to Eddy st corner much easier if I didn’t walk past it, the street signage wasn’t great. And what’s the deal with all the big M, Big T, Big S, Big L, signs? I have no idea what those letters infer, it’s stupid logic to expect visitors to know what the letters stand for. A diagram or cartoon emoji would be easier to understand. Also when I was walking to the motel, I’m looking up to the sidewalk roof cover for signage of the motel, but I ended up walking past the front door, so maybe a small sign protruding from the wall in some white cast iron fret work from the era this motel belongs to, if it’s in keeping with the original style.
