The Great Sothern is located in a great spot. Close transport to get you to other places. The room was clean, quiet and roomy. The onsite pub and restaurant were great.

I love the Art Deco theme. The location is perfect for a traveller using public transport. It is an easy 2 block walk away from Central Railway Station, and is a 1 block walk away from the Sydney Light Rail system The staff, as always, were friendly and accommodating. As an old Age Pensioner, I also appreciate the cost … not overpriced

This stay ( and I’ve lost count as to how many times I’ve stayed here over the past 20 years) I was given one of the smaller rooms … and in this room, the shower wasn’t great (unlike other stays, in other rooms) … it had fluctuating temperatures … either too hot, or too cold

I have been staying at the Great Southern Hotel, when I am in Sydney, for the last 3-4 years, after they renovated it and upgraded the bathrooms and rooms. It is a classic old hotel with heaps of charm, so don't expect the decor to be too modern. The price is very good for Sydney CBD. Very friendly staff and 24 hour desk. It is so well located. Right near Chinatown, Paddy's Market and short walk to Darling Harbour. The Light rail is right out the front on George Street, and it’s a 5 minute walk to Central Railway station with a direct line to the airport. No parking though, except at parking garages which are expensive. Much better suited for those using public transport. The pub has great food, delicious and generous serving at a great price with a different blackboard special each day. I will be staying there again.

Nothing.

The hotel is historic, but completely renovated, allowing you to take a pleasant leap back in time. It is located in a very central position: 5 minutes walk from Central Station (direct connection to the airport), 10 minutes walk from Darling Harbour and 10 minutes by tram (the stop is in front of the hotel) from the Sydney Opera House. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The continential breakfast is delicious.

During the day, from my room (on the seventh floor) you can hear the hum, probably from a fan, from outside the building. Luckily it stops around midnight.

The location is excellent, close to the rail station and several malls and restaurants, and within easy walking distance of Darling Harbour. The staff are helpful and courteous, check-in no problem. The room itself is very spacious and well-equipped, with plenty of electrical power points. Wi-fi is good. The air-conditioning is effective, if a bit slow to cool down the room after entering it as it switches off when you leave.

The hotel does show its age, the corridor carpet is dilapidated and our bathroom fittings needed maintenance. The breakfast options are very limited and we didn't try them.

We traveled from Ohio. We were in Australia for 30 days. Quickly we figured out the transit system and made our way around like a couple of locals. We could not believe how cheaply we traveled around. We could catch the tram to everywhere. The tram was right outside the GSH. PERFECT location. We were pleasantly surprised and impressed by this hotel. It was a perfect temperature, a perfect bed and the bathroom was perfect, too. It was very safe and quiet. We enjoyed the room, the restaurant, the perfect location and more. Bonus with a safe in the room. We were surprised the hotel allowed smoking. We could barely smell it when we walked down the hallway on the second floor. Barely! Kareena and Sujan helped us print items we needed for our cruise. We were very grateful.

Can’t think of a thing.

The Hotel rooms are very basic but clean and quiet. Think 1970s decor, however what sold it for us was the location. Absolutely PERFECT!!! We caught a train from the airport and when we got out at Central Station, looked up to see our hotel. Literally a 2 minute walk. The Light Rail Tram and Bus stop are even closer. You will not need a car when staying here as public transport is A1.

I would like there to be more options for family rooms with kitchenettes as having a larger fridge, microwave and toaster would be very handy. Having said that, there is a restaurant on site serving breakfast which was great value and the attached pub serves lunch and dinner. Plus there are multiple convenient stores within steps and Coles/Woolworths grocery supermarkets 5 minute walk away. Overall a great hotel if you just need a place to rest your head at night.

The rooms are a good size for a hotel in the heart of the city. Shower with large shower head. The beds are comfortable (although a little soft for me ) apart from air conditioning, a fan above the bed as well. Room we had was at the back, so very quiet. There is also a lift for each section and the lift for the back took us out to entrance to China town. The front lifts were near reception and a walk across George street to the light rail. Such a great location. Walk to the Capitol theatre and so many fabulous restaurants. Light rail can take you to the fish markets for a great seafood meal. The other direction takes you into the heart of the CBD and on to Circular Quay.

Bed a little too soft for me. Fine for a couple of nights.

Room and location were lovely. Staff were friendly and helpful

The parking was convenient and well priced, but it took a lot of back and forth with reception for us to be able to get into our parking space. There was no way to let them know before we arrived that we would like a space if one was available. There was nowhere to park while we checked with reception when we arrived if parking was available. The intercom didn't work and when we were finally able to get into the parking station there was a padlocked chain across our parking space. I am sure there must be a better way of arranging this.

Excellent location – very close to all the forms of public transport and to a wide variety of dining options (especially in China Town and Thai Town). We didn't find that part of the CBD to be particularly charming, but it was very easy to get from there to places that are. The room was clean, pleasant and comfortable. We loved the architecture of the building and the vintage fixtures, especially the wood panelling and the vintage radio and telephone in the reception area.

There wasn't really anything that we didn't like. The pub downstairs wasn't very charming or atmospheric but we didn't think that it was really part of the hotel as such, and there are plenty of pubs all around the CBD, if you're looking for one.
