The Great Sothern is located in a great spot. Close transport to get you to other places. The room was clean, quiet and roomy. The onsite pub and restaurant were great.

easy access to room
I was unaware that there were extra blankets and pillows stored in a cupboard, so I did not have a comfortable sleep as I couldn't get warm with the one flimsy blanket supplied on the bed. The extra blanket should already been on the bed, especially in the middle of a cold winter's night when we arrived on a late flight. Also where the two single beds joined to form a Queen bed could have been covered with another layer of bedding as this was very uncomfortable. To me this seemed like more of a convenience for Housekeeping.

I love the Art Deco theme. The location is perfect for a traveller using public transport. It is an easy 2 block walk away from Central Railway Station, and is a 1 block walk away from the Sydney Light Rail system The staff, as always, were friendly and accommodating. As an old Age Pensioner, I also appreciate the cost … not overpriced
This stay ( and I’ve lost count as to how many times I’ve stayed here over the past 20 years) I was given one of the smaller rooms … and in this room, the shower wasn’t great (unlike other stays, in other rooms) … it had fluctuating temperatures … either too hot, or too cold

I have been staying at the Great Southern Hotel, when I am in Sydney, for the last 3-4 years, after they renovated it and upgraded the bathrooms and rooms. It is a classic old hotel with heaps of charm, so don't expect the decor to be too modern. The price is very good for Sydney CBD. Very friendly staff and 24 hour desk. It is so well located. Right near Chinatown, Paddy's Market and short walk to Darling Harbour. The Light rail is right out the front on George Street, and it’s a 5 minute walk to Central Railway station with a direct line to the airport. No parking though, except at parking garages which are expensive. Much better suited for those using public transport. The pub has great food, delicious and generous serving at a great price with a different blackboard special each day. I will be staying there again.
Nothing.

The hotel is historic, but completely renovated, allowing you to take a pleasant leap back in time. It is located in a very central position: 5 minutes walk from Central Station (direct connection to the airport), 10 minutes walk from Darling Harbour and 10 minutes by tram (the stop is in front of the hotel) from the Sydney Opera House. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The continential breakfast is delicious.
During the day, from my room (on the seventh floor) you can hear the hum, probably from a fan, from outside the building. Luckily it stops around midnight.

Best location, walking distance to the Sydney international convention centre and Central rail and Light rail transport , 15 minutes flat walk to Sydney ICC. 24 hr gym next door. Great value meals for large portion sizes. Friendly efficient and knowledgeable staff. Attached to the pub via internal door access. Large new modern lifts with security tap on door cards. Best quality mattresses, carpets in great condition. Great quality curtains light blocking. Paddy’s market 3 minutes walk. Good food cafes and convenience stores close by. And a baggage weighing scale at the entrance/exit was a real source of comfort. The phone system was easy to use. The option to refuse daily housekeeping with customer pickup of items at reception is a good idea, saves me money and felt more private. Feels like home. Thanks everyone.
Two or three sheets of note paper would have been appreciated and a sign/notice to say push the card to click into the power slot might have made one less call from me to reception. A bedside light within reach of being in bed would have been handy, as I couldn’t find my glasses to find my mobile which I needed to use the torch on it.

I arrived early and very tired. The person(I wish I remembered his name) at reception was very welcoming and helpful. I was given a place to store my luggage and after a lovely breakfast to my amazement a room was ready for me. This was exceptional service and is the type of thing that keeps customers loyal to your hotel. Give that man a raise! It's embarrassing to forget his name after the amazing job he did looking after me. My name is Wil, room 327.
The floor outside my room squeaked very loudly, and was clearly heard in the room. I reported this to reception. I realise this not an easy fix.

The location is exceptional, and the price is great value. We ate in the bistro one night and the meal was a great size. Very pleased I was able to reserve a parking spot the morning of my arrival ($45/night) - I took a small car as was warned that the parks were narrow and the height limited to 1.8m. I think you could get cheaper rates down the road, but I enjoyed not having to pull my luggage along the street, so I'm happy to pay slightly extra for that convenience. Staff were very helpful and friendly - both bistro/bar staff and reception staff. I had a room overlooking George Street and was amazed how quiet it was - I couldn't hear the street noise (but people walking through the hotel corridor were sometimes noisy).
The beds were a bit uncomfortable for my liking.

We travelled from Newcastle by rail so proximity of hotel to Central Station was ideal. We attended a show at the Capitol Theatre which was only a 5 minute walk from the hotel. We were able to have a very nice dinner in the pub before attending the theatre. Didn't notice the 25% discount available on meals on provision of our theatre ticket, but will keep in mind for next visit. Unfortunately the discount vouchers were located next to the cutlery so not a good location as meals had already been ordered and paid for before vouchers were seen.
We were located on the fourth floor and the carpets in the hallways looked as though they hadn't been vacuumed for a long time. Bits and pieces of debris.

It's an old building but very well kept. Good clean room and good bathroom. We were lucky to get a room at the back so it was very quiet. The breakfast was excellent at $9 for a continental breakfast of choice 4 juices, and 4 fruit, 2 cereals, 2 yoghurt, 3 type of bread, 5 different toast toppings, tea and coffee and 2 different milks. All for $9. Absolute excellent value. You could have all that plus the hot breakfast eggs, bacon, baked beans, etc etc for just $17. Then the tram was just outside, the bus just up the road, the railway very nearby. What's not to like.
It was pouring rain when we arrived and it was hard for taxi to drop us exactly outside the door (but very close) as it was a Clearway. The driver didn't know that he could have taken us around the back of the building much easier. The room was a bit small.
