Was exactly as expected We stayed because it is a beautiful historic hotel A little run down now but still can imagine what it was like when the queen stayed The amenities are basic but comfortable and clean Hosts were friendly and informative Parking is a problem though but just need to look around We enjoyed the stay and had a good chat to the bar staff in the evening

Parking can be a problem

The position of this Grand old lady is fabulous. The staff were all very accommodating and the Thai restaurant attached does lovely food. That staircase is magnificent. Rooms tidy and bedding clean.

Hated having to check in in the public bar. Thought around 3 was a funny time to have reception closed when this is when guest would normally be checking in. Maybe find somewhere else would be better but the lady behind the bar was lovely. Noise in hallways outside the rooms Did not appear to be any sound proofing between rooms and hallways. We were prepared for some traffic noise as we were in town but you can clearly hear other guest talking and walking through the hallways. Maybe try and position bedheads off that wall. It would be great to see this grand old lady getting some TLC especially if you can try and save some of the fantastic features. The queen stayed there for goodness sake that should be reason enough to preserve this beautiful building.

The room was an excellent size for one person. The bathroom was very clean and had everything I needed. The bed was comfortable and warm. The hotel was quiet and I didnt hear any noise from the bars.

The only thing I didn't like was the noisy cars on the roundabout outside but that wasn't anything the hotel could rectify. I also was expecting a microwave in the room but couldn't find one.

Easy check in. Loved the new security door. We stayed in the balcony room. Plenty of coffee, hot chocolate, and tea. Enough milk provided for hot drinks, but we brought extra for our breakfast. Fridge is a little on the small side, but excellent use of space. We had been warned on check in that the downstairs bar was having a DJ and could be loud. If anything, the music enticed us down and the atmosphere was so great we stayed until almost closing. Will absolutely stay again.

The balcony could have done with a waterblast and some paint to spruce it up, but as it is a historically protected building I guess there is only so much they are allowed to do.

It's an antique hotel with a lot of history, although the prestige it used to have in the past has faded away. Nevertheless, it's quite good for the value if staying a couple of nights in Whangarei. It's clean, comfortable, it's got a TV, a kettle and a mini fridge. It's located 5 mins walking from city center. Again, you get what you pay for.

You need to check in and out in the bar located around the corner, and depending on the time you arrive/leave you might come across with some tipsy patrons. However they're normally quite friendly and you might even be invited to have a beer.

Clean room, staff were friendlier than last time. The room was well stocked. It was pleasant & we'll be back.

Checking in at the bar is painful, luggage in hand & noisy patrons in line as well as you there was an elderly couple checking in at the same time as us & I felt sorry for them, its horrendous can they not keep reception open until check-in closes at 11pm-ish?

The rooms were quaint and clean with everything you'd need. A throwback to the 70s and 80s yet comfortable beds & clean towels.

We had to check in at the bar (no problem) but it smelled like an ashtray. The customer was friendlier than the receptionist. There was blaring music from outside, not the hotels fault but wish we knew beforehand. It went on late at night and started again at 5am...

The staff were welcoming, friendly, and actually went out of their way to assist me. The room was quiet and clean. The attached Thai/Indian restaurant was excellent, with reasonable prices and attentive staff.

No negative comments at all. It's an old hotel with a colourful history, but that adds to the appeal.

convenient right in town and close to good food options . it’s above the Hotel who also do food and have karaoke . Friendly humorous staff. this hotel is where queen Elizabeth 2nd stayed in the 1950’s but it’s a bit tired now

there was no hot water on the morning we had to leave . none of the rooms had any hot water and no explanation given . the cleaning staff just said there is none and they didn’t know why. There was no one else to ask as it’s run by the Pub/hotel staff and they aren’t there in the morning Also quite noisy at night . but it’s price is not inflated so is still worth a stay as long as you are aware of these things

Breakfast? Was it supposed to be included? I wasn't aware of that. And it wasn't mentioned when I checked in.

The hotel is VERY old. Queen Elizabeth stayed there in 1953. Some things have been updated, of course. But the building itself is ancient.
