I’ve stayed here many times when it was known as “Sorensen’s.” This was my first visit under the new ownership running it as “Desolation Hotel.” I liked the addition of free EV charging. The staff were pleasant. I did not care for the “modern” renovation of the office area which felt cold and sterile. I miss the warmth and charm of the old office with its useful, curated collection of local books, field guides, & maps and selection of things to buy. This was much more in keeping with the resort’s purpose, location, and needs of its clientele than the minimalist, slick decor present there now. Some of the modern decor was carried into our cabin but seemed more tasteful there. Dinner in the cafe was good. Appreciated the complimentary glass of wine before dinner.

I was reminded how noisy it is (esp. outside of winter snow season) with too much vehicular traffic (even in the middle of the night) on the adjacent highway. Our selected cabin (Homestead) directly faced this road with no trees, other buildings to buffer sound so it was especially loud. I realize the resort can’t control this noise but they could acknowledge it and adjust pricing accordingly (quite a bit lower than current rate) and offer quality, complimentary ear plugs in the cabins.

Amazing location, surrounded by mountains, trees and a beautiful river. The yurt was beyond expectations, with all amenities one could need. The grounds are extremely well maintained, and a cozy sitting area with hammock, chairs, flowers, cornhole and more is on a converted historic bridge overlooking the river. This was one of the most scenic and romantic accommodations we've ever stayed in. Highly recommended!

We stayed in May when it was cooler, but unless they provide portable a/c for the yurts then it could get uncomfortably hot in the heat of summer.

The place is remote and quiet, the cabins are stylish and cozy with a beautiful kitchen stuffed with all the necessary appliances and a very comfortable bed. Our cabin Juniper had an amazing view on the side of the hill, it was such a pleasure to wake up with the view on the snowy mountains! The sauna was a great addition to our winter experience in the hotel.

A minor issue we had was that the territory is packed with cabins, so if you are not lucky you can end up staying in the cabin surrounded by walk paths and other cabins.

Loved how cute and cozy our cabin was. It was also really convenient that we could order food and have it delivered to us. We absolutely loved the sauna as well, it was perfect after a full day of skiing.

Our food was left at the front desk after it was ordered and they couldn't find where it was going at first so it arrived a little cold and because it was left out, our medium rare steak became more of a medium well steak.

I was somewhat caught off-guard by the lack of connectivity - no television or internet in-room - but that's not necessarily a bad thing; just unexpected. I especially didn't mind that there was no TV because otherwise I probably would have stayed up much later staring at the screen, and instead I got a really good night's sleep. The lack of wi-fi at first had me concerned because I had assumed I would be able to sign on and finish up some work the first night before taking a full vacation day. However, the internet was accessible from the restaurant/front desk area, and everything worked out fine.

Almost everything was good! I was there after ski day, and it was ~30mins away from Kirkwood Ski resort, in severe weather conditions. The room I had, was warm enough with windows open while it was snowing! Long story short, for your last minute, short Kirkwood trips, you can’t find better place!

The bed. The mattress was too firm. If I wasn’t tired, it would have taken too much time to fall into sleep.

Desolation Hotel in Hope Valley, Markleeville, offers clean and comfortable accommodation in a peaceful setting. Close to Kirkwood, it's perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. The sauna is a great perk, and the restaurant serves delicious food. A delightful retreat for relaxation and exploration.

I did notice occasional issues with slow Wi-Fi connectivity. However, for those seeking a peaceful retreat away from the digital world, this minor inconvenience may not detract from the overall experience of relaxation and enjoyment.

This “ hotel” is the beloved historic Sorensen’s, a collection of( mostly) log cabins in an aspen grove in the Hope Valley. The cabins have been updated in a restrained Scandinavian style, without ( thank goodness) marring their simplicity and calm , and off-the -grid serenity. The staff was wonderful.

We miss the old huge circular tables made from slabs of giant trees that used to be in the restaurant dining room. They were unique.

The atmosphere was great. Our cabin was very special and the sauna was a pleasure. We went on a couple of terrific hikes right next to the property as well. Unlimited free firewood for our cabin's fireplace as well!

The restaurant overall was very very good. Particularly the beef stew. However the vegetables with artichoke fondue dish was delicious except the broccoli was dry and old and could have benefitted from a brief blanching and icing before being served.

This quaint little place was such a treat. It was located right outside of town but you felt like you were in the mountains. Used the sauna and had a nice dinner at their restaurant. Everything was wonderful. It was magical in

Can’t think of anything I didn’t like or was missing. Didn’t get a chance to see general store:-(.
