I really liked the privacy—the beds have curtains, and the decoration is very nice. This hostel is really lovely. I’ve stayed at SafeStay before in other locations, but this is one of the most beautiful ones I’ve seen because of its decor. The shared rooms have a great atmosphere, with travelers mostly between 20 and 30 years old, so it was easy to meet people to hang out with and go to bars. It’s really close to the city—just about two blocks from the city center. It’s a very safe place, the cleanliness was good, and there was a shared bathroom inside the room.

The only thing I didn’t like was that the breakfast buffet cost £8 and was nothing more than bread with ham and cheese, croissants, and some kind of dessert I didn’t recognize. And to drink, there was only juice, milk, and a coffee machine—but unless you asked the staff, they wouldn’t tell you where the cups or other items were. So I felt that for £8, the buffet was quite limited. But aside from that, everything else was fine.

As hostels go, this one is just perfect. Everything is spotless clean, including bed linens. Beds are super comfortable, including duvets and pillows. Very nice touch - curtains for each bed, you feel completely private even though in a room with 9 other people. And the general ambiente is extraordinary of course, but a bit humbling as well. They have converted a Georgian house to this hostel, so that now 10 people sleep in bunk beds in former majestic bedrooms with high ceilings and chandeliers, and some in walk-in closets.

You need to walk to the historical center, may be 13 minutes, still not a big deal. Big deal is that you have to pay extra for luggage storage - this one bit was inconvenient and surprising for me.

I had a good experience staying at this hotel. I stayed in a room with 8 bunk beds and was given the top bunk. The room was very clean, and the person I shared it with was quiet and respectful. There was a small bathroom inside the room, but I didn’t notice it at first because it was hidden. The hotel is in a great location—only about 5 to 10 minutes’ walk to most of York’s main attractions. There are also shops along the way, which makes it convenient. Overall, it’s a nice and comfortable place to stay, especially if you’re traveling on a budget.

Some travelers were drinking and chatting outside on the street, and since the hotel isn’t very soundproof, I could hear them clearly from my room. It was a bit noisy at night.

Good value for money, Hostel just on outskirts of city centre, near train/bus. Near Punchbowl Whetherspoons, plus No 84 Sandwich Shop 3 doors down. (Huge Breakfast Bacon Bap £3.50 in May 2025) instead of £8 Continental one. A once sought after gorgeous Georgian house still featuring some original details with 3 storey’s of multi bedrooms of bunk beds (lower ones have privacy black out curtains, en-suite , NO Lift! Albeit bit noisy when some inconsiderate late night arrivals don’t bother to whisper or take off their heavy footwear on the wooden dormitory flooring, or don’t try to quietly open and close the clunky metal door fasteners, or use their mobile phones to locate the bunk numbers or slowly pull out the ample under-bed metal cages on wheels (take own Padlock, or hire or buy one). NB: Hire or buy towels (£3 or 6) from Hostel or …go to local Charity shops in centre (Colliergate St) or in Primark . Friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff on Reception. Some limited immediate SOS items or snacks from behind bar. (Toothbrush/laundry pods/locks etc ) Be patient, respectful and take ear plugs and eye mask if light sleeper in a mixed Dorm.

No lift! But totally understand that the period house would be ruined if did. No upper bunk curtains (high ceilings)

My wife and I have been living here since months and I really like the hostel. It's very convenient location next to the york town. 5 minutes walking distance. Hostel is very clean, amazing decoration and we appreciate the welcoming gestures of the receptionist DAWA who always helps us when we are in need. She recommends the places to explore, professional and we feel very welcome every time we check in. Safestay is our 2nd home bow and we recommend people to stay here.

The Best Hostel

Comfy beds and warm covers. Toilets and showers in the rooms worked great. The staff were great people. They make all the difference!

To make a great hostel even better I'd suggest: Boiled eggs with Breakfast. Protein is needed. Have voltage converters to loan out. Something with the USB connection. Many other hostels have the USB plug in at every electric plug. Of 5 nights and 5 rooms only one room had this. I got by ok without a kitchen and electric kettle because the staff was happy to provide hot water for those making their own tea and tea/coffee for breakfast. I wish I could of paid cash.

Nice hostel with good and central location, staff was really nice and the privacy curtains were also a good addition. The dining room was also a nice place to chill, same for the little outside area.

I stayed in a 10 person dorm and found the shower and toilet situation a bit limited. 1 toilet and 1 shower and one sink for the room. I did sleep in room 1 and there was some kind of ventilation which was noisy, so make sure to bring earplugs

I had a great stay at StaySafe York Micklegate! The location is perfect right in the heart of York, just a short walk from the train station and close to all the main attractions, restaurants, and shops. I stayed in a 6 bed female dorm, which was spotlessly clean and felt very secure and comfortable. The beds were well maintained. The staff were super friendly and welcoming and happy to help. A special shoutout to Jacob at the front desk.

Excellent location central and convenient for exploring York, close to the train station and attractions.

The location is good. The room I stayed in was nice-mixed room. Great size lockers under the bed. Good social space too. Check out time was good being 11am. Really pretty building and nice to have signs up to tell you the history I love how there's curtains over the beds too to give you privacy

Unfortunately they don't let you rent a towel or a lock or anything, they have them for sale at a price you could consider daylight robbery. Also my key card stopped working multiple times. I didn't have it against my phone or anything so not sure why it stopped working, was a hassle having to get it re connected at the reception desk but not too big of a problem Not a fan of only a cold breakfast for £8. Would be nice to have hot food too

This hostel is located a short walk from the train station and around a 10 minute walk into the town centre. We were very happy with the facilities and the common areas of the hostel. You can get a drink in the bar along with tea and coffee. The communal kitchen is large and there is plenty of room to sit down and eat or work on your laptop.

Our room was in the basement, which wasn't a problem, but it was a little cold, and the covers provided were a little too thin for the room's temperature. I'm sure this would have been rectified if we had asked for more covers, but it was bearable for one night, and the room did have heating.
