The room was clean and the bed and pillows were very comfortable. It is also a great central location for everything in York.

The bar staff were very rude to everybody they served. We had two separate couples at the side of us, complaining about "all three" of the bar staff, and we too found them very surly. However, the reception staff and the morning breakfast team, were polite and helpful.

The room was excellent. Large, clean, comfortable, quiet, great view. Location perfect. The fod in the bar was very good, staff all friendly and helpful.

Breakfast organisation. It was odd being directed to a particular table each morning, usually one is free to sit wherever feels comfortable, e.g. on upright chairs, not on 'comfy' sofa, in sun, not in sun etc etc, felt quite random and slightly intimidating - not as if same table each day possibly allocated to rooms, for eg. Cooked food lovely. Due to very small containers the plain yoghurt and milk ran out frequently and had to ask for refilling. Same fruit salad and croissant. The 'traffic light' system noted busy times so there was obvs more chance for things to run out, but equally containers could be doubled up/larger or staff be more aware to keep a closer eye at busier times.

We received a warm welcome from Sam on our arrival. Sam showed us to our room which was off the courtyard. Our room was spotlessly clean, spacious and very comfortable. Lots of wee extras which were much appreciated. The location of the hotel was perfect for all local attractions and an easy walk over Lendal Bridge to the train station. We had the continental breakfast each morning, which provided a good choice of fruit, yogurt, cereal, pastries etc. Diningroom staff were all friendly and helpful. There's a lovely outdoor terrace for leisurely drinks. I'd definitely stay here again.

Two areas which could be improved upon 1) on two mornings my friends breakfast mug was dirty (as if it hadn't been washed at all) and she had to ask for a replacement, it was replaced immediately. 2) the downstairs bar felt a bit chaotic when you went in to order drinks. Might have been down to inexperienced staff as they didn't seem to be familiar with the stock, we were ordering cocktails from the menu? This didn't spoil our stay though.

A beautiful old building with many original features in the heart of the city makes this an ideal place for those visiting York. Just a short walk from the train station as well, so there is no need to worry about trying to find somewhere to leave your car. The hotel was clean throughout, and the room was well presented with tea and coffee replenished daily. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming, especially Aga, who was a real pleasure to meet. The food on offer, both at breakfast and in the evening, was exceptional. We can think of no faults with Judge's Lodging and would definitely recommend to anyone thinking of visiting York.

Out twin room was (I was told) the only twin in the hotel - therefore no other choice available. However, the size was reasonable, the beds were comfortable, the bathroom was excellent with a full size bath and large shower space, plus we had big fluffy towels refreshed each day. The breakfasts were excellent, in fact the main course was really too much, but I'm a woman with a relatively small tummy, and we weren't complaining !!!

THE NOISE !! Unfortunately our bedroom overlooked the area where the hotel stores its bins. The staff emptied all the glass bottles into big bins and very unwelcome times of day and night. Also people would wander into this small area to smoke - most unpleasant when we wanted the window open and the smell intruded into our room. There is also a store room right opposite our bedroom and staff were going in and out, again, at all times of day and evening. I WOULD HAVE TO ASK FOR A DIFFERENT ROOM. That's for sure.

Great hosting and waiting staff, delicious breakfast and dinner, central prime location to the city attractions. There was a car park conveniently located only a short walk along the river.

Room not clean to a 5* standard (dirty under bed, mildew in shower, cobwebs and dust). Duvet cover did not fit over duvet properly, no amenities in eye mask and ear plug pouch. ‘Terrace’ room was an outbuilding directly across from glass sided restaurant, meaning we could not open blinds at any point meaning it felt a little confined.

Great location for visiting York. Beautiful old building, great, friendly and helpful staff. Lovely toiletries in bathroom. Nice coffee machine and selection of teas/coffees/biscuits etc. Good facilities in room - bathrobes, iron/ironing board, hairdryer, good makeup mirror. Courtyard rooms were very quiet. We would definitely stay here again.

Just a bit of housekeeping really, hubby took his shoes off in the room and found he had dusted the floor with his socks, also dust webs on ceiling, sheets had dirty marks on them (clean but stained) at the bottom of the bed. Nothing that would put us off returning, but we expected it to be really clean. Sink/tap in bathroom was difficult to get kettle under (had to use glass to fill it). We thought we had a fridge in the room but instead, milk was available in flasks.

The room was lovely, we were in the older part of the building. It was a very hot couple of days and because of the age of the building there is no air conditioning, a fan was installed but it really wasn't enough with the extreme heat. When visiting again if it is summertime we would request a room in the newer part which has air conditioning. The location is excellent, breakfast very good.

There are a number of steps to enter the building and then a staircase to access the bedrooms. I would say if you are a little unstable on your legs that may be a problem.

The location was amazing—just walking distance from everything and right in the heart of the city. I would definitely go back to this hotel.

The room we took wasn’t in the main building but had its own entrance, which was a nice touch. However, it had a slight musty odor, like an "old" smell from humidity, though it was incredibly cozy overall—I loved the room. The continental breakfast was a bit sparse, but it had the essentials. The included cooked breakfast (I chose the full English) was just amazing. The staff were generally nice, though when we arrived early, we had to wait until 3 PM to check in. This was the only hotel on our UK tour that couldn’t accommodate an early check-in—they were a bit strict about it.

Location is perfect right in the centre. Close to the Minster and shops. Great view from cosy room (Butlers Suite) at the front and a glimpse of York Minster towers at the back, food was very good, cellar bar atmospheric and friendly. All in all a welcome alternative to standard hotel chain fare.

No parking, only an expensive public car park several minutes walk away. While we were there the road outside the hotel was closed during the day so had to lug our cases to and fro before check in and after check out. Our room was on the smaller side but adequate and at the very top so needed assistance to carry our heavy cases up the steep and narrow staircase. Not cheap but nowhere decent in central York is so it does represent reasonable value for money and it's a quirky and historic place to stay.
