Excellent location, could walk to all major attractions from the hotel easily & we're seniors. Comfortable bed, very clean, good cooked breakfast , helpful & friendly staff. Surprised at how quiet the outside was considering central position. Near wide variety of eateries.

It would have been nice to have a second small towel ie 2 large & 2 small per couple, a plastic cup in the bathroom & a shelf in the shower for shampoo etc. Not a complaint but please teach staff that just because the room needs tidying the towels don't automatically have to be changed. If staff & guests know that dirty towels should be left on the floor of the shower (as in many hotels now) there would be less waste. Twice new clean towels were taken away for laundry because they were hung over the shower to dry (no room on small rail) Continental breakfast underwhelming.

Short distance to station. Ideal place, to walk to things to see without transport. Best place for being quiet after midnight till 7am you could hear a pin drop, that’s how quiet at that time through the night. Busy in day. Ideal for diversity of tourists… food excellent only had a night meal. Always busy which showed it was a great place to stay if you like old historical traditional inns. Great if you like the above comments. Highly suggest this place for most people. Staff was helpful and always appeared happy and appeared to have good team work throughout… would recommend to friends and family …

That’s a hard one to answer as it gave as everything and more…

By far one of the best places I’ve stayed, it’s all very antique and feels expensive. We were in the four poster room which is beautiful and usually has a stunning view of the Minster. It’s in a perfect location, we actually walked past a couple of times while looking for it as we didn’t realise that the rooms are in the upstairs of a pub, it doesn’t seem big enough looking at it from the outside but the room we stayed in was as big as it looks on the pictures. The pub closes at 12am and we did go out from 8pm until about 11pm but there wasn’t much noise from downstairs while we were in the room. The staff are really friendly, they dealt really well with a woman who seemed quiet… challenging. Breakfast looked beautiful but I had ordered the veggie option by accident and I didn’t like it, I’m confident they’d have remade it if I’d have asked but I felt a little too tender to wait for it to be remade! My friend had the full English and said it was perfect. Overall definitely recommended by both of us, it’s not often I actually leave a review but this place deserves one. Thank you, hopefully I’ll be back again at some point!

We stayed 01/08/25 and due to building developments across the street and on the pub itself, our view of the Minster from the room was quite obstructed. I do feel this minor let down was reflected in the price though and it’s still only a few steps away from to pub/room to go see it. The room was really dark but I think this may have been because of the scaffolding, the bathroom has good lighting to do make up etc though.

The room was really well and very tastefully furnished, clean and the bed was comfortable. I was only there for one night. I booked what I thought was a room overlooking the garden only to find it was a room just off the main courtyard. It was a pub courtyard so there was noise from the music and from the punters but I put a rainfall video on Youtube and it drowned it all out. The pub is in the centre of a major tourist city so you must expect city sounds but it closed at 23:30 and so from then on it was quiet. A few thumps from the upstairs but it didn't bother me. Bed, shower and all furnishings of a very high quality and the proximity to the cathedral is perfect. I was allowed to take two pints of Landlord to my room. Perfect. Anyone thinking of booking, you must understand that it is a pub and it is in the centre of town. The location was perfect, the pub great, the beer selection great, the staff great. I highly recommend and would love to return.

Nothing really, all good. Any noise can be dealt with by headphones or white noise playing and you must realise that you are in the centre of a major city tourist attraction, and...its is a pub. If you go there in anticipation of that, you'll be fine as the facilities are so excellent.

What's not to like. We enjoyed everything the hotel had to offer. The staff was polite, friendly, helpful always smiling. Really helped make the stay perfect The food was out of this world. We tried the pies, I had chicken and bacon. Just WOW and the full Yorkshire breakfast was really nice also. For a building 7 century's old. All the little imperfections just added to the character and charisma. The slanted floors did take some getting used to.

The ONLY negative which ISN'T anything to do with the hotel, but the St micheal belfrey was having some major work done to it. So wasn't much of a view.

Location Staff were all very pleasant Decor in the room (except noisy chandelier- see comments below)! Bed was comfortable Good bar and seating areas Nice place for a nightcap!

Chandelier in room rattled constantly (to extent it actually woke us both up at least once)! Very noisy from above the bedroom, especially at the weekend and after midnight (not sure if there is staff quarters or something else above the room)? Nowhere to hang towel in bathroom No mirror with good lighting (woman’s thing)! Shower temperature control knobs extremely difficult to adjust

Our 4 poster bed

Tiny tiny bathroom could only fit 1 person at a time. Shower water was scorching hot and only a little less so after they tried to adjust it. No elevator and there are many many stairs to climb to get to rooms. Only bar and kitchen staff on sight and no manager to check in or see if there is a problem. The bar and kitchen staff deal with any concerns. We were charged twice in error but they did put that right at the end of our stay.

Conveniently located to all the walking downtown historic locations. We stayed 1 night only. We wish we had 1 more day in York. Overnight parking was just a 8 minute walk. We did that after dropping our bags off by parking on the street beside the hotel. During peak hours there is no cars allowed on most of the historic streets. Be sure to find the 30+ cat statues located in the historic village.

It was great for us, however if stairs is an issue for you ask for the garden view rooms. They are main floor. Our friends stayed in one and enjoyed the nearby space for having a cigarette. Outdoor space heaters and large umbrellas cover the space. We had dinner and it was fabulous. My perfect meal consisted of a Yorkshire pudding with gravy and the sticky toffee pudding. It was fantastic! Red wine was the perfect pairing.

This is a very old building and it has a lot of character. The room was large and maybe a little quirky, but in a good way. There was an extra single bed in the room. The closet was large and the bathroom was nice. The room overlooked the beer garden outside which was pretty noisy early in the afternoon and evening, but quiet late at night. The pub downstairs was excellent and well worth a visit. The breakfast (extra) was great too and made to order. Probably the best bed pillows of our trip too! Great location too, close to York Minster Cathedral and The Shambles.

This was a great experience . The hotel is everything we expected the staff were even better . Due to my wife breaking both feet not long after we placed the booking , small things cause a problem with movement but the staff did everything one could ask for to make our stay brilliant . The food was lovely and prices not too bad . Once again thank you very much for a great 2 days

There was little or nothing to dislike . The place is old and does not lend itself to wheel chairs but as I say the staff did anything to help in this regards so no dislikes
