Beautiful, historic building in the shadow of the magnificent York Minster. Next door to Bootham Bar, Art Gallery, Theatre Royal and lots of lovely little shops, pubs and restaurants. The staff are plentiful, attentive, charming and nothing is too much trouble. I had a couple of tiny issues in my room (tv volume adjustment, short kettle kead) but these were dealt with efficiently and immediately, despite the hotel being exceptionally busy with guests and tourists in the beer garden. Really comfy bed and daily fresh towels, linen, as required, which was lovely. The chamber staff were helpful and very obliging as I have a slight disabilty. The general attitude was relaxed and comfortable.
My room was at the back overlooking the beer garden, which was ok, not too much noise. The only problem for me personally was the generator outside my room which came on early in the morning. I realise this is necessary, and as the staff member explained it was indeed turned off around 10-10:30 each night. I usually retired to bed after this time anyway! Also, as I am a bit unstable due to historic hip/leg/back injuries, a non-slip mat in the shower would be greatly appreciated, to avoid slipping etc, or a grab rail, and shelf for soap/shampoo to avoid bending down to shower tray.

We loved the quirkiness & character of the place. The room was clean cosy & comfortable & well equipped. The staff were friendly, helpful & welcoming. The beer garden was a nice little oasis in the middle of the city. The location couldn't have been better, 30 seconds from the minster & all the delights of York just a short walk away as well as being within easy walking distance to the station. Also surprisingly quiet in the morning despite being so close to everything in a city centre.
Not the hotel's problem more to do with our legs! but we were on the top floor & it was like climbing Everest every day to get to the room😂 If we were to stay again (which we definitely would) we'd probably request a room on a lower floor. Another very minor gripe was that whilst the bathroom was nicely furnished & spotlessly clean the tap for the wash basin was ridiculously oversized which made trying to have a simple wash in it extremely challenging.

The location is fantastic if you don’t have a car
We were in a room at the top, while quirky for some it would be a little claustrophobic for two relatively tall people. The bed was a double which was super comfy but too small for people of our height. We had to plug the kettle into a power plug on the floor as where it was had no accessible plug. The remote on the TV was stuck on subtitles and because it was a hookie cheap remote there was no way to change it. Not enough hooks in the bathroom or bedroom to hang towels and coats. Nice place but from a functional design point of view, could do with some more thought for the price.

Perfect location considering we were going to York Theatre Royal, not even 2 minutes walk away but also great access to a huge variety of shops, cafes and restaurants just a stones throw away. Staff were great, especially our waiter when we ate at the on-site restaurant in the evening! Speaking of which the dinner and breakfast were superb, especially the desserts. Highly reccomend a stay here, especially if you're planning on shopping and sightseeing as it has great access to York Minster (just at the end of the street in fact) and the Shambles marketplace and street which is barely 10 minutes away, if that.
Only complaint I'd bother to mention is the pillows were huge and soft but not very supportive. Sleeping on one felt too low but sleeping on 2 definitely strained my neck. Maybe an extra firmer pillow could be kept in storage in the room as an option?

Solo traveller from Australia 🇦🇺 I booked the Fat Badger because I stayed here 20 years ago and recognised it as I was going through the accommodation choices. Old world charm with a beautiful pub attached serving great meals. Close to everything, including York Minister. Right at one of the old Roman gates. Warning, very steep stairs, and no lift. However, the friendly staff carried my suitcase up to my room. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you like old-world charm. Tap water is not suitable for tea, so use bottled water. Lighting is not that bright.

A very centrally located historical Inn, excellent staff who willingly helped with our heavy bags, loved the decor and the breakfasts which were beautifully presented, Jeremy needs special mention for his upmost consideration of his guests, nothing was too much trouble for him. Enjoyed the comfy bed and hot showers. Loved the pealing of the bells nearby and the general vibrancy of York. A visit to the Yorkshire museum was so interesting. Excellent displays and friendly helpful staff.
Nothing.

One of the most friendliest places we've stayed. Situated in a convenient location, accessible to everywhere in York. The reception staff were very accommodating, went out there way to make sure we had everything we needed. The breakfast staff were amazing, Debbie and Jeremy were an absolute scream, so nice to have a joke and good sense of humour in the morning, such a pleasure to served by them. The choice of breakfast and quantity was epic. The rooms were well presented and very clean, had everything we needed for our stay. Would definitely stay again on our next trip to York 😍
The stay wasn't long enough

The staff were lovely and helpful and it was very easy to check in most of it was able to be done online so it was quick. The room was clean and the well thought out where things should be to utilise the space in the room due to its size. The window was big and let it lots on natural light. The black out curtains were great to help have a great night's sleep. This was a lovely hotel it's location is excellent and it's very cental to shops, bars and restaurants as well as local tourist attractions. Would definitely recommend it.
You could hear noise from outside we were at the front of the hotel. However because we knew the excellent location and that this could be a slight issue sleep wise we took ear plugs and had a great night's sleep.

the hotel was perfected located only a stones through from York Minster and a very short walk to the shambles and other main sites to see. The room was lovely and cosy, although we looked out over the secret garden it was not too noisy. We ate in the restaurant one night and the food was amazing with a great wine list.
the ceiling in the bathroom could have done with a refurb and the shower cubicle was a little cramped with nowhere to put toiletries but the shower's power was fantastic.

The Fat Badger has a great location! It's steps away from access to the city wall and a 5 minute walk to the York Minster. It was fun observing the street below my window. The bathroom was recently renovated & it's great having a kettle in the room. Some creaking floor boards added to the charm!
My room was on the 1st floor & the steps are narrow to reach it. Be aware that you will have to lug your things up them as there is no lift. The room has black walls & even black lampshades which gives it a gothic feel. Thankfully, the sun was shining out the window. There was some confusion about credit card payment when I checked out as the wait staff handles the rooms.
