Great location, excellent service at breakfast, mattress and pillows of unparalleled quality, mega comfortable bathroom, nice interiors - including common areas

1. The smell in my room - I reported from the beginning. It was a mega unpleasant, chemical smell. I am a person with a sensitive sense of smell, and as far as the olfactory plane is concerned, the two days of my stay were torture for me (despite the open window). I have no idea what the smell was. I located it near the headboard of the bed (maybe some kind of maintenance product?). 2. I had to intervene twice to get the two large spiders, along with the web, off the ceiling. The ceiling was high enough that I couldn't get rid of it myself. Seemingly no big deal, they were eventually removed. But still, I didn't even hear an apology at check out. Other than that, everything was perfect.

To say that this stay was exceptional would be an understatement. There are five star hotels and then there is Le Royal Lion. It has been a while since we last felt completely swept off our feet with service this stellar! It has been a while we have felt subject to the old school-James Bond- style-royal treatment. The breakfast is delicious and luckily they don't serve lunch and dinner, otherwise it would be impossible to stand on the measuring scale after this stay. Everything about the breakfast evokes the best possible attributes of French cuisine. Think: you wake up and finally someone had thought to bring the freshest croissants, the best jams, the coolest omelette - just for you The room was spacious really nicely furnished and it had everything needed. I didn't check if they had sewing needles and threads, but I am sure they had that too. The staff: patient, attentive, responsive and very very kind. They really made us feel like a million dollars! Thank you so much for being so kind!

I gave it the maximum rating BUT: I don’t know if I should be annoyed at Booking.com or the property for the misleading representation of the room. The hotel is located in Bellecour Square. The room I booked was listed as “Square view” - so I logically, but naively, assumed that since it came at a higher cost the room would have overlooked the square — which some rooms do (see photo below of the front of the hotel). Unfortunately, no. The room, like many others, faced the side street: Rue de la Charite’.

Reception staff are very good, very helpful, friendly and good natured. Concierge excellent. Room cleaned efficiently and fresh water, towels replaced sometimes twice per day. Restaurant staff in breakfast room are delightful. Location absolutely superb. A short stroll to Vieux Lyon, between the Rhone and the Soane and across the road from Bellecour Metro giving easy access to all other parts of the city. The 18 euro 3 day transport pass was red hot and superb value for money.

Not every hotel in Europe is worth 5 star rating, but Hotel Le Royal definitely is! We booked junior suite and it exceeded our expectations. The view was over Bellacour square and we could see Lyon Norte Dame from far far away. Breakfast, as all other reviews mention, is exceptional! Breakfast service is fantastic, minute you walk in, girls come up to offer drinks, etc. We’ve been traveling for several days in France before we came to Lyon and this is the only hotel where we thoroughly enjoyed the room, bed sheets, mattress, environment of the hotel and the location. Also, we did not have any dinner reservations for the night we got there and the reception girl booked us Michelin star restaurant, which did not disappoint. The experience of dinner was superb! (Les Terraces Florentine)

We chose this place for the valet service and so glad we did as you simply pull up outside and they take your car away. Was important for us with a one night stop driving through a big city we didn't know. It was good to be able to walk everywhere and it between the two rivers. We didn't have breakfast so can't comment on that.

We didn't like the original room as it was dark and faced a wall. We were very happy to pay another 25 euros and move to a much larger room with floor to ceiling windows that opened onto a view of the town.

Very well located in the beautiful city. Both concierge’s were very helpful but a few of the lady receptionists were rather superior … an unnecessary attitude which unfortunately we see quite often in our travels … smile more , engage and offer help especially if the concierge isn’t around to help with luggage ( as happened on arrival after a long journey)! The breakfast was expensive but good and the staff were lovely We had a very small room but it was fine for just one night … the cost for the dog was high ( given the cleaning was the same) and you pay extra for parking ( which we thought was included ) Good hotel in a lovely city

Great location in the heart of the city - a short walk to the old town. Valet parking. Attractive building , well appointed and stylishly decorated

Although the bathroom was large and airy, the bathtub (with shower) clearly favoured small Frenchmen and children The bar - although stylish and comfortable - needs a far more efficient system for taking orders and delivering drinks. It took 25 mins for our order to be processed and delivered. With prices typical of a 5 star establishment , no snacks were provided or offered with the drinks.

We stayed at the hotel on our first wedding anniversary and we couldn’t recommend it enough, the hotel is beautifully decorated, with great facilities and the location couldn’t be better, right in front of the metro station and short walk to old town. The staff was attentive and friendly and went above and beyond to make our celebration extra special! The breakfast is delicious with many options of delicious food to choose from.
