We were genuinely touched by the kindness and personal care extended to us throughout our stay. From the moment we checked in, we were welcomed by warm, empathetic staff who made us feel truly valued. As a Muslim guest, I initially overlooked the fact that the establishment is primarily a bar/pub. However, it turned out to be a peaceful environment throughout the day, and with the bar closing by 10 PM, which made all the difference. When we raised concerns about potential cross-contamination of the vegetarian breakfast with non-halal products, the staff handled it with great sensitivity. One of the team members personally consulted the chef, who kindly came out to speak with us. He clearly explained the additional precautions he would take and made sure we were comfortable with the arrangements. The entire team went above and beyond to ensure our stay was both pleasant and respectful of our needs. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved — your thoughtful service truly made our experience memorable.

The Badger Bar was everything we were hoping for! We loved the beautiful historical building and appreciated its interesting history. We found the location was superb for getting to many interesting walks and attractions really easily. The rooms were very comfortable and the breakfasts were outstanding. We didn't get a chance to have an evening meal on site but the menu read very well, and I'm sure the food matched the quality of the lovely cooked breakfasts. We enjoyed sitting in the bar in the evenings and, of course, enjoyed going on "badger watch" with other guests. But the best part of Badger Bar is the people, so a big shout out to everyone who welcomed us so warmly, looked after us, gave us tips for exploring the area and had a laugh with us. Much appreciated!
The bathrooms are a bit dated. I personally don't object and everything was spotlessly clean. And of course, the old adage holds true "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" so I really do appreciate looking after what is already there. (This just shows I had to work hard to find something I didn't like!)

Great location and parking, the food is fantastic and the staff is wonderful. Great beer and wine. Fun bar. There are some dated rooms and some that are newly refurbished for the hotel so you need to check which rooms you will be in and whether they are updated. The beds are comfortable and the room we stayed in was newly refurbished and was very nice. Great shower. Breakfast is excellent but they need to upgrade the coffee service. The pillows are hard, so a softer style would be better. Our dinner there was excellent. This is very much a bed and breakfast, with very good dining. It is a good value and the people who run it are top notch.
Better pillows. Better coffee.

Well located off the main A road but still remarkably quiet from the room in the coach house. A quaint traditional venue with 400 years of history and plenty to see on site. There were a number of local walks from the hotel, plus a spot to sit and watch for badgers. The bar was well stocked, the beer gardens were sunny and relaxing, the breakfast was great, the beds were comfy, the shower was excellent, rooms clean, free parking on site - pretty much faultless and I’ve already recommended this place to a friend. We would definitely return, which says it all!
It’s hard to find much to criticise about the overall experience; if being pedantic the fruit juice served at breakfast could have been fresh rather than the low-end cartoned stuff as this really wasn’t in keeping with the overall quality and attention to detail everywhere else.

The location is perfect 👍 The badger watching was a real treat and a first. The room was extremely spacious and the bathroom modern and well lit.
The room was unbelievably hot with only one window that opened so we had to wedge the door open to create a draft through the room. We appreciate that it was a particularly hot weekend but for the price of the room, a fan would have been welcome as well as the offer of some iced water on arrival (given there was no fridge in the room) Just a jug of tap water with ice to take up to the room would have been really appreciated and again, given the price of the room, not beyond our expectations we don’t think. Just some little things that would have made all the difference and improved the quality of our stay.

This was a lovely b&b with friendly and attentive staff who made our stay enjoyable. The hotel is situated in the heart of history and nature in the lake district and had many interesting points to view within walking distance. The badger feeding was an amazing highlight and we got to see several badgers just steps away from the front door. Our rooms were clean, comfortable, and well designed with lovely floral patterns and local artwork adorning the walls. The complimentary tea and coffee station was also a treat. I really enjoyed the folder explaining local attractions and history of the space. The dinner was fantastic and the sticky toffee pudding was to die for. Kookie was a lovely surprise as well and very friendly.
Breakfast could have had a bit more variety, most of it contained eggs and it would have been nice to see some sweet options as well not just savoury on the menu. Breakfast however was still very tasty!

Stayed in the cottage, it was super cozy and already warm when we got there. Private, with pretty view of the main building out of the window. The bed was huuuuge and very comfortable. Spotted a badger during the feeding. Had an evening meal at the pub when we arrived and both dishes ordered were superb. Good breakfast. Staff were very friendly and kind. Short walking distance to Rydal Cave and beautiful views by the water. Within short driving distance of many hiking trails and locations of interest. Great experience.
Bath was out of order, my partner hoped to have a soak after a day of hiking. Everything else was great though so this was very minor.

The single room in the cottage has recently been renovated and was well appointed and situated just behind the badger viewing area, meaning it was easy to pop out to see the furry residents! Staff were really friendly despite my visit being on a very quiet Monday evening. Very comfy bed without footboard which is great for those of us of a taller disposition. Really warm and welcoming. Great lakeside walks from pub.
Bits of the bathroom were mid repair but I'm sure once the fan is working and the damp ceiling is sorted this room will be perfect. Breakfast was nice but was quite standard.

Wonderful hotel full of character, great staff, relaxed atmosphere and excellent location for walking - nice to be in the small hamlet of Rydal but with Ambleside a 20 minute walk away or short bus ride. Excellent breakfast and some good choices for evening meals too. And badger watching a huge bonus!
The upstairs cottage room is huge and generally comfortable but quite dark as it's heavily shaded by trees, roof leaked a little in one spot when we had extended mega heavy rain, and the hallway is a little damp - but none of this was a big deal and didn't spoil our stay - would definitely book this hotel again

It was exactly what I expected an authentic countryside hotel to be like, I stayed in the cottage at the back after receiving a free room upgrade and the facilities were great but it still had that nice rustic feel to it. It was kept to a clean standard and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I dined in the restaurant both nights and the food was good and the staff were very attentive overall it was a very positive stay.
There is nothing that comes to mind when making a comment on what I didn’t like.
