Upon reading some of the reviews, I was quite skeptical to book the room, especially as I was traveling with a 5 year old kid. But for 44 pounds, I thought we could try it and if we didn’t like it, we could just get to another hotel. The hotel met my expectation just fine. The check-in process was a breeze. The lady who checks you in is very kind and understanding (unlike some of the bad reviews). She gave us a room with 3 beds as I had a child with me; we chatted a little bit and she was definitely the HIGHLIGHT of our stay. She has been with the hotel for a decade and is an extremely kind and knowledgeable manager. The hotel and the rooms are old but very clean. The linen, the towels and the room was spotless. We had hot water; a kettle with tea and coffee. Plugs are not in perfect places but keep in mind its an old building. The location is right in town center; 5 mins walk to a Waitrose and 10mins walk to the train station. I had absolutely nothing to complain about. Keep your expectations aligned with the reality that it’s an old hotel and you will be fine.

The hotel is old and could REALLY use some refurbishing.

This is my go-to place when arriving late or leaving early from Stansted. There is a 24-hour bus to the airport from Bishop's Stortford (£2) which stops nearby. The hotel is a (very) old pub and the age of the rooms reflects this. The lady that has checked me in on my stays is very helpful and kind. The room had a comfy bed, wall-mounted TV and kettle with tea and coffee. The bathroom has a large shower and soap, shower gel and shampoo are provided. Be aware that this is an old building and old hotel when booking.

The hotel is on a main road in the town so at the weekend there are people out until late and you may hear some noise from the street - not within the hotel's control but something to be aware of. The hotel is old and has not been updated for a while - although it is clean, secure and has everything you need for your stay.

A Hidden Gem Near Stansted We chose the St. George Hotel for one very practical reason: it's close to the airport. Full stop. But what we didn't expect was to leave genuinely delighted. Let's start with the basics: the room and bathroom were spotless. Not "Instagram spotless" - real-life clean. The kind of clean that makes you exhale and think, OK, I can actually relax here without wiping everything down first. The lovely person who welcomed us was warm, helpful, and possibly moonlighting as a local guide. She not only explained where to catch the bus (lifesaver), but also gave us one of those conversations that feel like a proper human moment in the middle of travel chaos. Now, if you're one of those people who picks hotels based on whether they'll match your Instagram grid... well, this might not be your dream location. There are no velvet armchairs, no neon "good vibes only" signs. But if you, like me, appreciate charm, character, and a place that's honest about what it offers, then you'll feel right at home. We enjoyed our stay. We booked it because we had an early flight. It was the most affordable place so close to Stansted Airport. The entrance was a bit old and not very welcoming. The room was as described, the carped could do with a change as it is used and not sure about how clean but the bed and the bathroom were VERY clean. This 2 are the most important things for me. The bed sheet of a perfect white, so fresh and clean. The cot we had on request was for no additional fee and again, very clean. The bed was very comfortable. Also, we had a sofa as well. We had mugs with tea and coffee, milk and a kettle. The lady that took care of us was amazing, I asked for extra towels and an extra pillow and she helped me. Overall a very nice experience.

The staff was great. Very helpful and the late check-in was very quick and very much appreciated. We stayed just one night, running early to catch our flight. The room was spacious and had a kettle and stocked up tea station, the bathroom was clean and had complimentary toiletries, towels, and hot water with good pressure. All these things made our short stay enjoyable and helped us rest before our flight.

Some of the things are fairly dated and the carpet in our room looked quite tired. All of this is offset by the low price.

Easy to get to , close to everything.

Location ideal for the town centre of Bishops Stortford. The bed was really comfy and had a good nights sleep Thought the shower was going to let me down, but good pressure from it. Tea and coffee making facilities had enough milks too (I normally run-out).

Signage to the entrance from the main road could have been better - ended up going into the restaurant! Obviously its an old building, so it does look tired in a few places.

Excellent stopover for the airport or London as it's a nice town, trains frequent,7 mins on the train then less than 10 mins walk from the station. Excellent communication from Dee,my flight was delayed,I arrived very late and my email was replied to giving me peace of mind. Warm , clean and comfortable room.Bishops Stortford has everything in the way of shopping if you need supplies for the journey.

Stayed for a night before a flight from Stansted the following day and was very impressed with the hotel. The room was large, spacious and very comfortable with all the facilities I needed: eg. kettle, TV, fan for cooling the room, seating etc. The bathroom was also sizeable and clean with a good shower and soap/ shower gel provided for the stay. Only dealt with one staff member when I checked in, she was friendly and very informative and helpful. Location wise it was perfect for the airport, it was a short walk from the hotel to the train station (and from there a short ride to the airport). Also the location was convenient for the town centre in Bishop Stortford, with plenty of bars, restaurants and shops within easy reach. (The hotel had an Italian restaurant on site also which looked good but I didn't need to use it on this visit)

Great location, very close to the train station and the airport, price was right, the hotel has a unique charm, it's a very old building, plus it has its own ghost - the Grey Lady, in room 27, plus some other, less famous ones in basements. The lady (who works there, not the ghost, although it might've been the ghost, you never know with ghosts) was very friendly, very helpful, and we enjoyed our stay. The bed was comfortable, the room was clean and spacious, with a big TV and a kettle for coffee or tea, wifi was also great. I disagree with most of the negative reviews I had read. Quiet place, very safe, full of history, great visit!

The check-in was a bit of a problem, as there is a phone number provided, but I do not have a British phone, so not sure how foreigners can call, a friend did it for me. The room was too hot, but not a big deal, we just had the window open. The shower was too hot, as well. There is a need of refreshment, like missing handles on the chest of drawers, but I think minor ones, as I can't imagine a modern looking place with ghosts, it just doesn't work. I can see how people might complain about the very thick carpet, I think it was unique, so you can hear the ghosts better. It was a bit noisy on Friday night, but that happens everywhere.
