Amongst the different opinions that you have in Cairns, this might be the most comfortable one. 2km away from the city centre but with a free shuttle that leaves there (and picks you up) every 30 min. Cool swimming pool, spacious common area (except for the kitchen which might even be stressful at times due to the amount of people), and a pub with very good prices.

The atmosphere is very young and joyful, but if you want to rest, this might not be the place. A lot of youngsters live and work here, but I suppose that I am too old to cope with that lifestyle. However I would repeat with no doubts

I had a very smooth arrival in Cairns. The reception is 24/7 open so arriving at night from the airport was no issue at all. The hostel has a lot of facilities such a swimming pool, beach volley, a bar so is a great place to socialize, but also has quiet corners and quiet times in the evenings are respected. There is a shuttle of the hostel available every 30mins, to take you into the center of Cairns. There is a travel agency inside of the hostel where you can book tours. Hostel is tidy and gets cleaned very regularly throughout the whole day.

Be warned: It’s a huge, labyrinthine 1950s-style concrete blockhouse — the kind of place nightmares are made of. And yet, the incredibly kind service, the amazing and entirely unexpected free upgrade (I’d booked a metal bunk in a 4-bed dorm and was spontaneously offered a private double en-suite at no extra cost), plus the super convenient location near the airport — making the Uber ride ridiculously fast and cheap ($6!) — more than made up for the “brutalist fever dream” vibes. It was the best night’s sleep I’ve had in six days — finally, a proper rest! Thank you. <3

Genuinely couldn’t have started my Australia travelling in a better place. The staff were all friendly particularly Slawek (I’m really sorry if I’ve butchered the spelling) the travel agent for the hostel who, if you’re disorganised or solo like me, was incredibly helpful with suggesting and booking hostels, tours and bus times for the whole rest of my route. There’s a great social space, pool area, a happy hour, and daily activities so it’s so easy to meet people and we particularly enjoyed Anna’s trivia night. The hostel also offers free shuttles into Cairns (outside the night market) twice an hour for free which was really helpful for boat tours etc.

I should have stayed an extra couple of nights!

pool was great, shuttles into cairns centre from hostel were amazing so convenient. Room was a decent size, good aircon.

Felt like far too many people for the size of the facilities. Kitchen was always overcrowded had to wait ages for a hob and people were always messy so was not nice but fine for what you pay. Bathrooms were always busy too had to often wait for a shower / toilet and due to no window in there they were super hot.

I liked everything about the hostel, the staff was very friendly and helpful, the rooms and bathrooms were very clean, there was AC in my room and the WhatsApp group helped a lot to know the different events that were taking place during the day.

Maybe the location is the only thing I would say that I didn't like it very much but the hostel had a free mini bus that ran every half hour and took you from the hostel to the night markets so I didn't have much of a problem :)

Excellent social spaces including pool, garden, bar, benches, hammocks, sofas etc. and social activities every night including beer pong, trivia, board games, yoga etc. there is also a free shuttle bus every 30 minutes in and out of the city which was helpful.

We weren’t allowed to open the windows in the room at all (so the air wasn’t very nice and the room didn’t dry out very well after the shower was used) and the air con was on all the time. We weren’t allowed to change the settings and had to ask at reception for them to change it.

This place is so clean! I love how polite the staff are, how beautiful the property is and it's in the perfect location just out of the centre of town to relax and enjoy the sunshine by the pool! I love this place, and came to stay again after I visited four years ago. The vibes is so fun and friendly, with the lively bar space, social lounging spot and even a quiet garden space with hammocks for a little quiet time! 10/10 🍌

I'd like a hand washing station in the hostel kitchenette

The pool, bar and common areas were great to use whilst staying here. There was also a free shuttle bus and free bike hire which was great to explore on. Not many hostels do this so this is great! Bedroom and bathroom were also really clean with house keeping every day.

A lot of long stays here so it’s difficult to find people who are actively travelling and felt like people already had own little groups but wasn’t a massive issue as we made plenty of friends. Just something to have in mind.

Everything! There are games and activities every night which is such a good way to meet people. There is a free shuttle into the centre, free rental bikes, washing facilities and literally everything you need for a short or long term stay. I love it so much I have decided to here stay long term! The staff are amazing too and will help you with everything you need, and reception is 24/7 which is great for arriving late. The people that stay in the hostel are amazing too, I had made so many friends even by my second day - it’s like a big family here. The rooms are clean, the air con is great, there is a bar and restaurant which sells the tastiest food and the kitchen/ toilets are cleaned loads of times during the day too unlike other hostels. I really can’t fault Summerhouse at all, it’s turned into a second home for me😍

Nothing! I did think not being in the city centre would be an issue but the shuttle runs all day and it only takes 5 mins to get into the centre.
