It is a lovely old hotel with an old world charm. The staff in the Le Bistro Restaurant were quite nice and very helpful with explanations on the menu items. Good location.

A little pretentious for the leisure traveler. I was treated particularly poorly in the lounge. The hotel needs to up its game on treating all guests with respect and complete courtesy and stop with the overly arrogant 18th Century attitudes.

The hotel is a beautiful historic building with classic interiors and an atmosphere full of character. Both restaurants are decent, but the štrukli served at the Bistro are absolutely delicious - truly a highlight. We stayed in a deluxe double room which was spacious enough and included a coffee machine with good-quality capsules. There’s also parking available for guests. And I must mention - the coffee in the Bistro was exceptionally good.

At check-in, I had to go inside and organize valet service and help with luggage myself, which was surprising for a five-star hotel. I was also asked to pay upon arrival, which seemed unusual, and they mentioned a deposit that, as far as I could tell, wasn’t clearly stated anywhere beforehand. The room didn’t have tea or a kettle, and there was no complimentary water - perhaps there was some in the minibar for an extra charge, but I’m not sure. As for toiletries, only two L’Occitane products were provided, which felt rather minimal for a hotel of this category - typically you’d expect things like hair conditioner and body lotion, both. Breakfast was also quite basic, nothing special.

Esplanade Zagreb is one of those rare hotels that effortlessly combines timeless elegance with modern comfort. I’ve been staying here regularly for years, and each visit is a true pleasure. The hotel has an unmistakable charm — from its beautifully restored historic architecture to the refined interior design that radiates style and sophistication. The location is ideal, just a short walk from the city center, yet quietly tucked away enough to offer a peaceful atmosphere. The staff is exceptional: always professional, warm, and genuinely attentive, making you feel welcomed and well cared for from the moment you arrive. The breakfast is outstanding, with a rich selection of fresh and high-quality options served in a beautiful setting. Whether I’m in Zagreb for business or leisure, staying at the Esplanade is something I always look forward to. It’s a hotel that understands true hospitality and never disappoints.

If I had to mention one downside, it would be the recent changes to some of the artwork and interior decor. In a few areas, the updated pieces feel less refined and don’t quite match the high standard and timeless elegance of the hotel’s original design. It’s a minor detail, but one that slightly detracts from the otherwise impeccable atmosphere.

Great location, near the the main Zagreb train station. Comfortable room. Pleasant staff. Quality room service.

Unusual in this day and age to not have a coffee machine in the room. Also surprised there was no complimentary water upon arrival, as is the norm in such hotels (though the tap water is completely drinkable). The hotel's water supply was cut off one night for several hours and so we were unable to shower or wash and had to use mini-bar water to brush our teeth etc, At least management didn't charge us for that water but we didn't get any other comps for the inconvenience

Lovely surroundings and good location. Spacious room with a nice view but there was no-where to put suitcases. Comfortable beds, spacious bathroom. It was nice to have real soap (and not liquid soap) for showering. Lovely, helpful staff. Nice restaurants.

Breakfast was a little disappointing but could order from the menu or buffet which was unique, generally though the food was just OK. The downstairs Bistro was lovely, staff were fabulous, good menu selection. There was an issue with the glass door to the toilet dragging on the floor. We were afraid it was going to come off. When we mentioned it to staff they didn't seem too concerned.

This is one of those rare hotels that is more reminiscent of a family than a part of the service industry. I've spent the last few Christmases at this hotel, and I truly feel like I've been welcomed into that family. While the hotel is incredibly well-appointed and steeped in history - you really couldn't do better than a restaurant with two Michelin restaurants - it's this staff of consummate professionals that makes this a home away from home. Come on by and grab a seat at the bar!

That I have to ever leave.

Beautiful and historic hotel in the centre of Zagreb. Room was a great size and I loved the art deco feel of the decor in the room, bathroom and throughout the hotel. Very comfortable bed. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Shame I was only able to stay one night due to an early flight.

There were no complimentary drinks or tea/coffee making facilities in the room, not even a kettle. The mini bar was well stocked even with mini bottles of champagne but no way to make coffee/tea unless you ordered through room service. This is a pretty standard facility for a five star hotel so it was disappointing that nothing was provided and has led me to give a lower score in my review.

The property is impeccable, lovely, stately, and filled with old world charm. The room is comfortable and the bath area is huge. My husband loved the endless pot of coffee with the delicious breakfast buffet. There are beautiful spaces inside and surrounding the hotel where guests can linger over drinks and conversation. The staff is attentive and most helpful.

The hotel is near the train station, lovely park and art museums. It is close to the city center, but about 3 blocks further than my husband cared to walk. But because it is not directly in the city center, the location is pretty quiet and calm, yet convenient to shopping, cafes, and transportation.

The architecture and pure history of this hotel is amazing. From check in to check out our whole stay was fantastic. I like that the rooms are spacious as are the bathrooms, and that there’s a little book with the history of the property. We didn’t try the restaurants but the cocktails in the bar were fantastic and the staff were all welcoming and helpful. I’d stay here again.

Zagreb was an interesting city as there was a lot of renovations happening to the historical buildings around the city and therefore we weren’t really sure where the “centre” was at first, a quick 15min walk though and we were part of the hustle and bustle. It’s a very flat city so easy to walk around and public transport is everywhere and super close to this hotel.

This is an top iconic luxury hotel was built to cater for the Orient Express train passengers on their way from Paris to Istanbul in 1925. So it reaches its centenary next year. The highlight is the very fine Emerald Ballroom, which is oval and has a dome ceiling. This enables patrons to hear conversations form one side of the room to the other. It is said that this facility was used by certain individuals before the Second World War and during the Cold War. The bedroom was very comfortable and well appointed. The breakfast was excellent, when the staff were very attentive. The location of the hotel is very near to Zagreb's main railway station and within walking distance of the Old Town and the city's main attractions. It is also easy to drive to from off the A1, A2, and A3 motorways from the south west of the city. The breakfasts in the sunny Zinfandel's Restaurant were excellent with the staff there being very efficient and attentive. The slightly more casual Bistro Restaurant on the western side of the hotel is very good on a warm summer's evening. The concierge, porters, waiting and bedroom cleaning staff were very helpful and friendly. They all appeared to be privileged to be working in such a very special establishment. We would have no hesitation in recommending this independent historic luxury hotel to anyone other than to remote internet business users (see below).

I found that the use of my remote server was not possible on the hotel's internet system. This was very unfortunate. The problem occurs with large hotels with numerous guests. Essentially either guests should have to log in and provide a password or the hotel should provide another internet connection. The firewall on the hotel's system evidently blocks remote users. The hotel provided a mobile internet device, which unfortunately did not work for me. This problem should be rectified very soon. Otherwise, foreign business patrons will frequent another hotel in Zagreb, which would be a pity.
