The place was nicer than expected, we had private room, which was quite good size and clean. Kitchen was well equiped and cleaned daily. Showers with good hot water supply and cleaned daily.
They need to work on the door closers as the floor main door and some room doors would slam the whole time, therefore if you are light sleeper you won't sleep at all. Also would suggest you do something about the access system, so we do not have to ring the bell and wait everytime need to come back inside the building. Maybe access with the keycard would be great. And last suggestion would be if you could provide some teas and coffee even is cheap soluble one, that would be a great bonus, especially at those prices. I know is cheap for the city but it is still expensive for the rest of the world.

They upgraded me from the "42-bed dorm" to a 6-bed dorm, which was very much appreciated. Beds were very comfortable. Plenty of bathrooms on each floor, and great kitchens on at least two of the floors.
I was a little annoyed that the prices went down AFTER I had already paid my non-refundable booking. It seems that happens a lot at this hostel (compare prices for this week with prices in the future). Maybe best to book last-minute here. Staff was hard to find. The reception desk was empty for several minutes while another guest and I were waiting to check in, before someone finally came. The front door is also super hard to find. No sign (or maybe a small one once you get right up to the door), and the buildings on both sides are under construction, so it's hard to notice this building. There is a back entrance, but it's equally hard to find, through a maze of construction fences.

Location prime and beautiful. Breakfast buffet fabulous. The main level bar/sitting area really well laid out, decorated and inviting. Love all the books and odds and ends in bookshelves, on the wall, etc. Love that this was a cookie factory. Suggest perhaps having cookies as an afternoon/teatime treat available in bar/food area. Pizza and other menu items wonderful; just wish they were available a little later into the evening. Cocktails fun.
Noise level. The ground floor has a large party room and there is another party room on the main level. Gatherings can go past midnight, including thumping music and raucous partygoers. Showers could be very slippery! Water sits on floor with soap scum making it a tad treacherous at times. You might want to consider creating a bit more “curb appeal” for the front of the building. Right now it looks like an abandoned warehouse (with what seems an abandoned building next door). It takes a moment and second look at the address to confirm that one is at the correct address!

I stayed at KEX Hostel for 7 days, and my experience was fantastic. Pana (the Greek guy) was the first person to greet me upon my arrival, and his friendliness and professionalism stood out from the start. He provided all the essential information about Reykjavik and didn’t hesitate to recommend things to do in Iceland. Since I arrived on Christmas Eve, Pana quickly advised me to visit the nearest supermarket to buy food for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, as many restaurants would be closed. He even suggested alternative supermarkets in case the closest one closed early. His thoughtfulness and care were truly impressive. Throughout my stay, Pana consistently demonstrated exceptional service. I saw him helping a guest who was stranded when a tour bus failed to pick them up—he contacted the travel agency and rearranged the trip without hesitation. At the end of my stay, when my luggage broke just before heading to the airport, Pana came up with a quick solution. He suggested wrapping the luggage with duct tape, fetched some from the equipment room, and even ran to another staff member to find a stronger tape to ensure my luggage stayed secure during the flight. Thanks to him, my luggage arrived in London without any issues. It’s clear that Pana takes his job seriously and goes above and beyond to provide the best service to his guests. As for KEX Hostel itself, it’s an amazing place to stay. The hostel is clean, and I noticed the staff consistently maintaining cleanliness throughout the day. I highly recommend KEX Hostel to anyone visiting Reykjavik—it’s not just the excellent facilities but also the incredible staff like Pana that make it a memorable experience.

I loved that they upgraded me from a dorm to a double room. I am not their usual demographic as I am a solo female traveller aged 75. As they were doing massive renovations on the 2 bottom floors, the bar and garden on the ground floor were not operating so that suited me very well. It was very peaceful which I imagine will not be the case once the renovations are completed. The front rooms all have wonderful water views. The whole hostel, including the bedrooms, were wonderfully decorated with antiques and interesting bric a brac and there was a variety of lounge areas to hang out. The kitchens, one on each floor, were fully equipped with everything you might need. The other outstanding thing was that there were many toilets and bathrooms, meaning that you never needed to queue for a toilet. This place was exceptional! I imagine if I was 50 years younger, I would love it once the bar etc are open again.
During the renovations, it was a bit of a hike with luggage up to the 3rd floor to check in and then the 4th floor to my room. I believe that they are putting lifts in the building so this will no longer be an issue. I didn't like the feel of the polyester fitted sheet on the bed, but the duvet covers were very nice cotton.

Ive stayed at this place several times The vibe of this place is excellent From the airport it’s easy to get to this place by bus. The staff is amazing, very helpful. The even help you book for tours and bus to return back to airport. There are several bathrooms and toilets with nice hot water and good pressure The kitchen is well equipped. There is a grocery store behind the hostel. The beds are clean and have crisp clean white bedding. The house keeping staff are amazing. The rooms and dorms have nice heating.
It’s temporary i know, the construction at the hostel is going on since almost a year. Climbing stairs is sometimes a hindrance, specially with luggage Please keep at reception ( visible), soap, toothpaste, brush, shampoo all in small sizes for sale . Also put up a sign- towels for rent too. Please put some snacks too near reception for sale. Or ask the reception to mention all this while checking in. Also a big roll up banner by excursions company near the reception mentioning all the tours with prices will help the guests. Big pictures on walls of various tourist attractions in Iceland will also help in promoting Iceland tourism.

My room was a large double room and was very homely and comfortable. I had a view out to the ocean which was lovely. The staff at the hostel were friendly and knowledgeable and bathroom and kitchen facilities were good and spacious. I really loved the theming of the hostel! Every room and walkway had quirky knick knacks that gave the place a lot of personality. The hostel felt close to everything and was always easy to find due to its proximity to the water.
The only thing that was missing for me was the bar/ restaurant. This was listed on the website but was being renovated and so was out of action during my stay.

The 42-bed room was much better than it sounds. It is divided into sections by walls, so it doesn't feel like cramped. The hostel is located in downtown, easy to walk everywhere, the staff is very friendly and helpful, they are working together with day tour companies, so they pick you up with a bus directly in front of the hostel. Breakfast is top quality, rich selection of sweet and savory options. The kitchen is open also later, you can eat lunch and dinner in the hostel. Super fast Wifi, you can work from there.

Great place for solo travellers, you feel safe and get to meet people from all over the world. I stayed in room 413 (6-bed female dorm) and I think the 4th floor is better than the 3rd (even if going up 4 floors with no lift is a bit of a pain). There's plenty of private bathrooms, you sometimes need to wait for a little while, but it's fine (just bring flip-flops because the floor gets really wet from the shower), there's a hairdryer in the common shower room. There's a kitchen and a laundry room. The bar on the 2nd floor is large and normally full of people in the evening. Live music sometimes can get loud, but it has a good vibe. The breakfast buffet is not worth the price. Staff was very international and nice. They are undergoing renovations at the moment and the front door is hard to find, don't worry if the entrance is a bit dodgy, once you get in, you'll like it. Check out the reviews on Google maps for photos.
When they have live concerts at the bar it gets very loud; there's no lift; bathrooms are only cleaned once a day and after 8 in the morning, so if you want to have a late or very early shower you might find a not so clean bathroom; breakfast buffet is not that good.

- really appreciated the upgrade to a better room and the option to choose between bunk and bottom bed :) - a lot of bathroom facilities on the floor, never had to wait to use one - kind and knowledgeable staff - beds with curtains provided a sense of privacy - nice big lockers in the room - books and sofas on the corridor - bus stop right next to the hostel, easy pickup arrangements
- no breakfast :( - I happened to be there while a big group of teenagers had their stay too. They were extremely loud late in the evenings which made it difficult to fall asleep :( they would also have their daily meetings (it looked like an organised trip) in the kitchen which made it close to impossible to use at that time
