When we pulled up in the darkness of the early evening just the glow of the pub told me it was just what I had wanted. First impression was perfect. Checking in was super easy , the country pub feel was there in abundance. The little touches before we went upstairs stood out. Paper bags for muddy boots , absolute genius ✔️ A dog menu ✔️ brilliant!! Going upto the room I got that cosy feeling you expect from a country pub / inn. When I opened the door to our room I was so giddy. The size of the room , the lighting , the upholstery, the bed size , the slippers and robes , little fridge with baby bottles of milk and a large bottle of water , the tea and coffee tray with little local Eccles cakes and an espresso machine , 2 gorgeous windows with window seats and a view over looking the river!!! A very large bathroom with a super sized bath and a shower with gorgeous toiletries. It's all these things that made our first weekend away in 12 years extra special for us. Then the food , from the 5* breakfast to the evening meal of beautifully hand made traditional pub food it just blew us away. The real fires set against the monks benches and winged back chairs with comfy cushions just set the right atmosphere. It's a place you can stop off on a walk with your dog and snuggle in for the night . We will definitely be back. It's just stunning. Keep doing what you do because you've nailed it.
There was nothing not to like .

The bedroom was beautiful and well equipped, the towels and bed linen were really good quality. Nice view from window , some nice treats like fresh milk in the fridge and tiny individual Eccles cakes . The food in the restaurant and for breakfast was really good ,using local ingredients and freshly cooked to order .
The pub is on a blind corner and so walking from the pub to the car park was quite dangerous at times as cars buzzed round the corner . It was really hot while we were there and you could only open the windows by about 6 inches so although the room had a fan we couldn’t get any through breeze and it got very hot in the room . With the fan on all night and the windows open and the road traffic noise I found it hard to sleep . These factors in no way reflect on the hotel , they are not things they could control in anyway , they can’t be held responsible for the climate or the traffic !

Room size, excellent! The bed was huge and so comfy. Beautiful furnishings. Appreciated the fresh milk in the room fridge. It is obvious that the property is maintained well. Polite staff.
The power cut. Staff wrote a letter and pushed it under the bedroom door explaining the situation (it was a village power cut, so I understand that it was beyond their control). Pub is also used for conference meetings. I was only there for 1 night, but in the morning on my way to have breakfast a very large group were attending in the bar and it is obvious there is a staircase and people need to pass but I had to keep saying excuse me and they didn't move. When I checked out, the same thing happened.and I struggled to pass with my case, as people were standing right in front of the staircase. It would help if the pub, maybe, put a small portable barrier or sign up saying to keep the space clear, so it is obvious not to stand directly in front of the staircase stopping access.

Whilst I generally enjoy staying in pubs/inns I usually accept a lower standard of accommodation - their first priority, after all, is to serve food and drink to their daily guests. This does not apply to the Spread Eagle! Situated in a beautiful spot beside the river Ribble, in an ancient, characterful building, I was treated to some of the finesthospitality I have known. The staff were welcoming, warm and friendly. The food was superb, particularly the breakfast, served attentively by Libby. My room was immaculately clean with no sign of the unintentional 'shabby chic' I find so often in pub accommodation. The good range of real ales was well-kept. I shall be back with my wife for a longer stay in one of the grander rooms. (Gizza discount!)
Nothing!

We loved the beautiful suite we had on the corner of the building overlooking the river. Lovely decor with seating area and window seats for peaceful moments. Lovely coffee in the room. Dinner and breakfast both excellent. Sawley Abbey ruins 5 minute walk. The pub is in a lovely spot. Great location for touring the area. Usually quiet even though the building is on the road..
Unfortunately, some youths (I assume, due to their athleticism) came into the pub car park opposite around midnight. We heard what we thought were bin lids banging. When we went to our car in the morning, the bonnet was dented with a perfectly formed seated shape! Kinda funny really! We managed to fix the bonnet. We aren't precious about our car but glad it wasn’t an expensive one. We didn't discuss it with the Spread Eagle as we were leaving. Wouldn't stop us going back.

Very dog friendly. Our dog loved her treats and toy that were left in the room for her. Dog menu too was a nice touch. Room looked lovely and exceeded our expectations. Big room too. Dinner and breakfasts good. Fish pie and soup particularly tasty. A little too much dried onion on the top of husbands sausage and mash but that was all. Eggs Benedict for breakfast great. Good choice of options too. The waitresses were all very friendly and helpful.
The water for the shower wasn't very hot on the evening, but it was fine in the morning. Perhaps others staying had had baths and used it up. Shower was a little tricky to work we found. Road a little noisy but farmers were leading corn so just unlucky I suspect picking that night.

Lovely quiet stay. This was much needed after my wifes recent operation. We had a lovely welcome and it was even better that our room was ready upon arrival. We were not expecting access until 3pm. We had a lovely lunch and a few drinks. Fudge (our dog) was made to feel very welcome and the team even found a welcome pack for her. The Spread Eagle, was clean, well laid out, great food, brill staff and the location is beautiful. Perfect for our quiet getaway of 'do nothing'. Should you wish to walk, explore, view the ruins of the monastery and so on then there is plenty to do locally including a visit to Clitheroe....which we did do prior to arrival. The location is great to use as a 'base' if you were looking to explore the area. The bedroom was a good size, clean and with great facilities. I would highly recommend The Spread Eagle for lunch, evening meal, celebrations and its a beautiful location for a wedding should you be looking for a venue. Right off the A59 too. Ideal. Thank you to everyone that was involved in our stay....from the owners to everyone that served us a drink or food. We very much enjoyed our stay and will be back.
Nothing....everything was excellent

The Spread Eagle is a delightful old pub on the banks of the river Ribble. The room was lovely and we enjoyed good food at dinner and breakfast. The village of Sawley with its abbey ruins is delightful. The staff at the pub were pleasant enough but not very welcoming or warm. After our evening meal we went in the bar for a drink and it was cold so I asked if they would light the fire but was told that it was too late ( it was 8.20pm) and they would be closing soon. Also the radiators in our bedroom had been turned off but they did turn those back on. The service was rather abrupt also. I would recommend this pub for its facilities, food and location but the staff need to be more engaged with their customers.

Booked Room 2 - lovely spacious room. overlooking the road so not the best views but comfy bed - fabulous pillows - large tub in room and shower - Nespresso machine !!!! gorgeous little treat to go with the coffee. Very quiet so not a great deal of atmosphere on a cold March 3rd but thats just time of year - in Summer I can imagine it would be heaving. Lots of walks round the area Breakfast was amazing !! Eggs Benedict superb. & a lovely full english Evening Meal had 30% off (monday night deal in March) Will return but would book riverside view. Room was really warm so opened the window - so got traffic noise at 5am from lorries trundling past but our fault for opening the window !!! Landlady very welcoming - great spot -

Staff very polite, attentive, and friendly. The food was amazing both evening and breakfast. The room decoration felt homely. The bed linen exceptionally comfortable. Strong, hot shower in the room with lovely-smelling body wash. Very clean hotel throughout. Lovely view of the river and hills from the bedroom, albeit the windows are low. Free car parking.
The room was boiling even with the radiator off - opening a window meant road noise. The bed was a tad bit hard. The bath robes were a little rough feeling. Coffee in the room and dining area was awful; the pods provided in the room didn't fit the coffee machine, and it was difficult to plug the machine into a socket (room 9). There wasn’t much space to sit in the bar area for a drink - although there is seating in the garden across the road for warmer days. Minor things which shouldn't put you off; it's one of the better, affordable hotels to stay in.
