Beautiful hotel that's a great introduction to Costa Rica! Loved staying somewhere with character and class. The food was phenomenal- we had dinner there twice! The staff were incredibly helpful and warm. We would come back again!

We stayed in the least costly option- the first stay we were in a standard double room. Works great! Would just say the bathroom is real tight. The sink area is small to work with but doable! Second stay we were in a superior queen room which had more space. We enjoyed that! But could go either way depending on wanting to save money.

I booked this hotel to recoup after long flights from London. It was everything we needed. Spotlessly clean and comfortable. The hotel is very attractive, with lush planting and interesting features. My 10 year old particularly loved the rooftop jacuzzi. The restaurant was wonderful and has a kids menu for dinner. Breakfast was a highlight. The staff are attentive, particularly the waiting staff and the turn down service was good to have. All in all, it's a pretty much perfect hotel to rest in. We did venture to the local market and the art gallery. I wouldn't say there is much to do with children in the area, but we were there to rest before moving on.

Beautiful place close to downtown (about a 45 minute walk). We booked to stay the last two nights before leaving Costa Rica. Very friendly staff, had one excellent dinner at the restaurant. Nice room with everything you need. Free parking just across the street.

(This has nothing to do with the exceptional hotel !) - Location is good, if you want to walk into town or the Sabana park, but (as in many bigger cities) it is not advisable to walk around at night. Costa Rica is definitely one of the most beautiful countries on this planet, it deserves a much nicer capitol, unfortunately.

The food was excellent although expensive but that was to be expected. The decor and setting of the hotel was lovely and the room was very comfortable with a charming small patio area complete with water feature. The reception staff were excellent and very helpful as were most of the staff in the restaurant.

The location isn't the nicest but it is a relatively short distance to downtown San Jose. Some of the restaurant staff could have been a bit friendlier, just because a restaurant has a great reputation, it doesn't mean you can be aloof when serving guests.

The Hotel looks attractive from the outside & a member of staff was ready to take our suitcases into the Hotel. We loved the original feel & design of the inside, it was interesting & characterful, you certainly cannot say this about most newer hotels. The Reception area had a stylish feel, as did the breakfast/dining rooms with a wonderful open courtyard available. The bed was comfortable with cotton bed linen, the AC effective & quiet & the room had a high pitched wooden ceiling which made the room spacious (no doubt one of the benefits of the room upgrade). We also liked being at 1st floor level with small trees outside the window. The bathroom & room were both in nice condition. The breakfast was served in the open courtyard and was an enjoyable experience, the food was nicely presented & delicious. We had a very minor issue with the room safe and we were very impressed that the Manager arrived promptly to unlock & reset the safe code. The Manager was the member of staff who provided outstanding service (explains why he's the manager).

While the Hotel looks great from the outside, the surrounding streets are not attractive tbh. Security is clearly an issue with very high fences & razor wire something you would typically expect in South Africa. We eat our dinner at a local restaurant very close by and felt perfectly safe on our walk to/from the restaurant. The bathroom had a bath & stand in the bath shower with a nylon shower curtain, for the cost of the upgraded room I would have expected a walk in shower with glass walls. The water flow from the shower was moderate at best. The bathroom lacked any air extraction (an extract fan could have been installed in the glass of the small window). This window clearly used to open but is now sealed up so no way to clear toilet pongs which was a shame.

This hotel was perfect in every way. It is a beautiful building, with warm and classically decorated and furnished. Even the Christmas decorations were beautiful and tasteful. Our room was large, comfortable and with super comfortable bed. The bathroom large and with a big shower with hot water. The toiletries smelled lovely and there was a lot. The restaurant area is gorgeous and the food delicious. Breakfast had a very good choice and well cooked and served. Every member of staff was cheerful, friendly and helpful.

Stayed here several times for the last couple of nights of our Costa Rica trips. Good quality, great staff, good rooms and excellent restaurant. It is a really good place to spend a couple of nights chilling out before flying home. Also an easy walk into town for an explore or lunch. Car rental companies have collected our rental car from the hotel which saves time and messing about. We will be back.

All was good. we have stayed several times, so if there was something that we did not like we would not have stayed again.

We arrived at 1am to the warmest welcome from Jorge that I’ve ever experienced at a hotel. It was such a treat to receive an upgraded room - which was gorgeous. It had a little patio with a water fountain & plants. The hotel is beautiful, very clean & the staff very friendly. The restaurant is in a lovely courtyard & the food superb. We were very impressed with both the menu diversity & very impressive quality of the food.

A gorgeous period house that has been converted into a plush and classy hotel. The rooms were comfortable, if a little on the small side, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. There were a couple of very nice restaurants in the locality (La Muny Restaurante and Bar and Restaurante Machu Picchu), and central San José with its museums and churches was only a relatively short (3 km) walk away. There is a quality (but rather pricy) restaurant on site, and also a gift shop. Overall, a very pleasant place to stay, and San José was a great base from which to take drives out to the local countryside.

A swimming pool would have been nice, but perhaps a bit too much to ask in a relatively small urban setting.

This property is a beautiful gem with so much charm. The halls are filled with old photos, and library bookshelf, beautiful plants and indoor/outdoor feature makes you feel surprisingly connected to nature in the middle of the city. The restaurant was beautiful and the food was delicious.

The jacuzzis don’t open until 9am, I’m an early riser so it would have been nice to start my day in the Jacuzzi on the rooftop earlier.
