Cosy, traditional inn in the centre of Hawkshead. Good breakfast with a choice of cooked options and also cereals and croissants. Friendly and helpful staff. Good supply of tea, coffee and biscuits in the bedroom. Comfortable bed and great blackout curtains.
Although comfortable, the bedroom we stayed in (room 5) was extremely small and much smaller than other rooms on the same floor. It was adequate for two nights but we wouldn’t want to stay in it for longer. The bathroom was too small for a hand basin which was placed in a corner of the bedroom (making bedroom space even smaller). Nowhere to hang or store clothes and we had to move bags around when going in and out of the bathroom because of limited space. Check the size of the room before booking as our friends, who paid the same, were allocated a much bigger room!

staff were really helpful couldn't do enough for us, the chef cooked whatever we wanted, we had to leave a day early as my friend was feeling poorly, the chef offered to make us a packed lunch, the bar staff were excellent and made us feel welcome, nothing was too much trouble for them.
The bathroom floor sloped up a tiny bit, but that is how old buildings are

The food was excellent and expectations of dining here wasn't' just pub food I have had 4 Star food and it wasn't half as nice as here the waitress were so attentive to your dining experience that we couldn't of had a better stay. Thank you for making our stay wonderful. All the local people were so nice 🙂 thank you we will be back very soon.
The bathrooms weren't finished off but everything else made up for our wonderful stay xxx

Full of interesting original features. Floors were definitely wonky as you'd expect in a property of this age - it added to the experience. Breakfast was excellent. Freshly cooked to order and beautifully presented. Staff were helpful and friendly.
A shelf in the bathroom, to put toiletry bags on, would have been very helpful.

It’s a traditional old pub in middle of Hawkshead which we love. The business in process of handover to new owner but Steve - temp manager - was amazing. There were no pun measly unfortunately but the breakfasts were excellent and Steve was Chef/waiter/bar staff/room service etc - all of which he carried out with aplomb
It was unfortunate there were no evening/pub meals but this is a temporary situation I believe. It could do with a bit of facelift inside but again that will probably change with new owner.

The pub and hotel were very nice, perfectly acceptable, as were the staff. Room 3 (at the back) was great and had everything you needed with a few extra touches. You could hear the kitchen extractor when the kitchen was open, but you are there to enjoy the area and pubs etc...not sit in your room. So it didn't matter as it wasn't on when you were asleep. Room 5 (on the front) was smaller and without a hanging rack (like Room 3), but when you book, it clearly says small double. A minor thing the bathroom fan could do with some maintenance, it was pretty noisy and stays on for a while , can be a bit disturbing if you use the loo during the night. But both rooms were lovely and very clean. The food was great and all the staff were super too. Thank you for a lovey stay!
I felt sorry for the staff and owners. They were all working very hard.. but there just wasn't enough of them to go around. There is a massive lack of hospitality staff in the Lakes..well everywhere tbh, so the staff in situ had to make up for this. And they did their absolute best.

Quirky, clean and excellent location. There are limited car spaces at the rear otherwise you have to park on the main car park 400 meters away. Excellent food at dinner. We booked this as a last minute add on to our holiday in the lake District and we are glad we did.
A rather small ensuite and a small double room.

Fantastic service. Excellent food, both in the evening and at breakfast. The draught beer and ciders were also excellent. The rooms were a little small and the floors were a bit uneven, but hey, the building is 500 years old, so it's going to be a bit quirky! Embrace it!

It was fantastic to see new tenants in the Red Lion. The rooms have been painted/decorated, which made a huge difference from our last visit. I believe the new carpets are being laid this week, which again, will make such a difference! The staff were friendly, and allowed us to change our time for breakfast in the morning. The breakfast was very tasty (plenty on the plate) and plenty of tea/coffee/juice etc. to follow. We wish the new tenants the "best of luck", and hope they settle in well at Hawkshead! We will certainly recommend the Red Lion to family and friends.
