⭐ 5/5 – An Amazing Stay at Basel Youth Hostel I didn’t expect to be this impressed by a hostel, but Basel Youth Hostel really delivered. From the moment I arrived, I noticed how clean, spacious, and well-maintained everything was—it instantly felt comfortable. What truly stood out was the thick walls—finally, a hostel where you don’t hear everything through paper-thin dividers! It made a huge difference in sleep quality after a long journey. And the floor heating? A game-changer. That little touch made the space feel extra cozy, especially on colder days. Everything about my stay felt smooth and effortless, allowing me to just focus on enjoying Basel. If you’re looking for a place where you can rest properly, feel at ease, and trust that everything is well taken care of, this is it. Highly recommend!

I was a bit apprehensive about booking something that called itself a youth hostel, but it turns out to be a stunning blend of comfort and style. From the vaulted dining hall to the serene riverside terrace, and my en-suite room that feels like a minimalist-modernist monastic retreat. The staff were all exceptionally helpful and friendly, responding to all my questions with patience and kindness. The inclusive breakfast is a real bonus to start the day! And the setting is just gorgeous! Surrounded by beautiful historic building and very near the Rhein for gentle walks and yet still very easy to reach from the centre of the city.

Good location in the city center, 5-10 min by foot to tram stations. Good and varied breakfast. The room, toilet and shower were clean. Large storage lockers in the room. Calm atmosphere so you can relax.

In order to use the storage lockers in the room, you need to put two francs there. To do this, I had to go to an ATM to withdraw money. The minimum amount that can be withdrawn is 50 francs. Then I had to go to the store to change 50 francs. It took a lot of time and I ended up with a lot of unnecessary cash on my hands.

Nice location, no far from the city center and from public transport but in a very quite area. The wifi works well in the room. The showers are outside from the room but are many, large and confortable. The room and the beds are ok. The breakfast is enough good.

It is no possible to go to the room before 3 p.m. Towel not included but available for a fee. You have to also pay the tourist tax for the stay and it is expensive. At breakfast, you have to pay to get hot beverage like espresso or cappuccino.. never seen.. if the breakfast is included , it is included.

So when I first arrived I thought I'd come to the wrong place, this definitely has fancy hotel vibes rather than hostel ones. The free breakfast provided was great too, and really good value considering it's Switzerland (buffet options for mainly cold foods). Bathrooms were clean and plenty of showers available, sink in dorm room was a nice touch too. They have a games room downstairs too which I wasn't aware of until I had to leave. Use of lockers in dorm room (and also if you want to store stuff in luggage room before/after checkout) is free but just needs you to put a coin in that you'll get back (reception can exchange any notes you have for coins).

Room took a little long to get ready (I arrived like 2 hours after check in time but they were only just preparing my bed and had to wait a few mins, but not a big deal, just slightly surprised as things in Switzerland are usually very punctual). For me location was good, being next to river in a calm spot, but for others it might be a little out of the way, you do get a free Basel transport card though if you don't wanna walk much. Only other thing was you have to make your own bed and throw the sheets into laundry basket after, but fine considering the price.

I had a great stay at Youth Hostel Basel! The staff at the reception were incredibly helpful and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I really appreciated the free public transport vouchers—it made getting around the city super convenient. The hostel also offers a luggage deposit facility and complimentary tea and coffee, which were thoughtful touches. The location is quite accessible too, with public transport just an 8–10 minute walk away. Overall, a comfortable and well-equipped place to stay in Basel!

Basel Youth Hostel (Jugendherberge Basel) is a modern conversion of what was originally a factory building dating from 1850s. It's close to the Rhein, and about 15 min on foot from the Kunstmuseum tram stop (and the Altstadt), or 20 min on foot from the main railway station (Bahnhof Basel SBB). Expect the standard hostel experience for the price, but I must add that the included buffet breakfast was excellent. Remember to factor this in if comparing hostel prices in Basel :-).

Not really any problems. For what appears to be such a quiet corner, the street outside was unexpectedly a bit noisier than you might expect (late evening motorbikes, loud conversations), but overnight was fine.

Good location, close to trams, green and quiet around, outdoor terrace with relaxing river sound and birds singing.

To connect to wifi they require you sign up with your phone number and introduce special code you need to receive via SMA to your mobile phone. This requires EU travelers to activate roaming and incur high roaming charges for Switzerland (not part of the EU roaming service). It happened to me and my invoice was really high due to the time I spend in roaming trying to get the wifi activation code via SMS in roaming. This hostel should offer wifi service free of charge connected NOT through paying for international roaming services.

-For my staying overnight in Basel, they gave me the Baselcard, which allowed me to take the public transport for free and enter most museums with discounts, so the price of the hostel justified itself for me. -The hostel is spacious and comfortable. -The staff do their best in making you feel at home. -There are many bathrooms around the corridor, so you don’t have to wait in line to use those as in many other hostels.

-The breakfast could have had more variety, especially in the bread department. -The check out time was too early at 10 am. -You need to climb up an incline to leave the hostel every time, which I found inconvenient, especially with my large backpack after checkout.

Great hostel in a very good location in Basel. Simple, but nice industrial-style decor, and clean facilities.

10:00 check-out time is too early for any accommodation (what's wrong with 11:00?), though there is the option to extend this by paying a reasonable fixed fee. However, I did not appreciate that this fee was increased significantly simply because of high demand during our stay, so we had to settle for the earlier departure.
