Atmospheric, well maintained for its age. The food and beer were fantastic. The staff were brilliant. This is the oldest pub in Chester still serving beer. If your after all mod cons and perfection then don’t come here. If you want a pub with atmosphere, great food and great staff then this is the place for you.

A little bit noisy first thing in the morning but it didn’t spoil our stay.

Love this hotel. You have to stay here even if it's just to walk up the ancient wonky staircase! Beautiful room, ceiling a little low but that can't be helped as it was built in a time when people were hobbits and the wooden beams on the ceiling made me feel like I was an pixie sleeping in a grand piano. Also, mushrooms made me see a ghost called Lawrence who offered to sharpen my blade but I kept telling him that I don't carry one so he just melted into the toilet and I eventually nodded off, only to awake to the sound of two yellow finch mating on my window sill at 8am. Turns out, what had happened was, I'd fallen asleep with babeStation on the telly and I imagine as they flew past, they saw what was going down, it must have gotten them in the mood! As I approached them, they stopped, the lad finch turned his head, gave me a little nod and I thought to myself, good lad, then I drew the curtains out of respect. This is the second time I'd stayed at this hotel and the first time I'd tried hallucinogenics. Suffice to say, the first stay was less interesting but equally comfortable. Thanks all, I'll be back.

Mushrooms

Right next to the steps up to the walls, short walk from car park, bus station and train station in one direction. Short walk to Cathedral and Rows and Grosvenor shopping centre. Quirky old building (16c) Brews real ale Great bar, quiz thursdays Breakfast can be tweaked, eg eggs cooked any way you like, leave off hash brown and get extra egg etc. You can buy food and tea and coffee all day

If you don't want full English ( meat or meat free) there's only toast or cereal as an alternative or derivatives of the full english. No fruit, pastries, fish Four poster room was advertised with picture showing old fashioned four poster. What we got was a modern pine frame around the bed, not a disaster, but a disappointment

Central position . Character building . Good value for money

Shower. Could provide Shower Cap. Really powerful lots of hot water, however only had an overhead Shower head so for anyone who may not want to wash their hair every morning a Shower cap is needed.

We loved the location in terms of how it sat right in the centre. A short walk to many restaurants and cafe’s and shops too, as well as tourist spots. The room was clean, and the check in and out process was fast and easy.

The ONLY negative was the noise during the early hours of the morning. I don’t know if we were just unlucky with the night we chose but emptying what sounded like 100 bottle bins through the night, and then a delivery of again what sounded like 100 kegs of beer (and may I add the delivery driver chose to drop every single one on the ground repeatedly) meant we didn’t get much sleep at all. I can’t say if this was the hotels delivery or the surrounding establishments but I would definitely recommend a strong set of earplugs for future guests and I think a heads up before booking/while checking in would have been appreciated and avoided as much frustration while laid awake unable to sleep.

My room (17) was on a side street between two pubs, yet was remarkably peaceful. This may have been partly due to the Christmas break. Portable radiators made it as toasty warm as I wanted. Room and en suite very clean. The bar and lounge were tastefully decorated boutique style. I enjoyed the varied cow art! Staff were pleasant apart from 'Mr Surly'.

I'd have liked a choice of softer pillows. No combination of natural and artificial light allowed enough illumination for applying makeup at the dressing table or full length mirror. Residents should be warned to ask expressly for the 10% discount on food to be applied.

My friend and I were meeting up after 7yrs, Chester was half way, and the Pied Bull looked nice enough. It was so much more than nice enough though, it was excellent ... from the central location to the staff (special mention to Kerry, with thanks xx) to the lovely comfortable, clean twin share room (with excellent shower pressure x) to the bar service, and ... the icing on the cake, a quiz night! We (team name Rum & Reason :)) did not excel, sadly, but would love to revisit some time to redeem ourselves! Thanks to all for the best environment for 2 old friends to catch up ... one from the UK, and one from Australia, at the best little Inn in Chester xxx

Excellent location, friendly staff, well appointed room with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Hot shower , comfortable bed, warm room. Food in the restaurant was good, I had the Ale Pie which was great and so was the Quafabull Beer. Well cooked breakfast with plenty of it. We were early for booking in but were able to leave our bags at reception while we walked around the city. Would stay here again and recommend.

The bar/restaurant area could have been warmer, i know it was exceptionally cold outside but other bars and restaurants in the area didn't have a problem. It's a very old building so I know it's probably difficult to heat effectively. A couple more breakfast options would be good apart from how your eggs should be cooked. It was still very nice though.

Location was brilliant, very central to everything. Staff very lovely, friendly and accommodating. If we asked for something, it wasn't an issue for them. Room was much bigger than I expected, very clean and tidy, we had no faults with the room whatsoever. We were both very pleased and would 100% come back

This isn't any fault of their own but unfortunately you can hear people outside passing if they are very merry due to other pubs nearby but it is what you should expect when booking in premises like this and in the location where it is, we were very open minded knowing this would be the case but in all, either way, we enjoyed our stay

When it came to checking in the staff were friendly and informative. The room was bigger than I expected, it was clean with comfy beds and a closet for clothes, the bathroom and shower were good. I didn’t have breakfast but I did eat later in the evening and the food was nice and fairly priced.

At night it was a little loud in the room from the noise downstairs and from the other nearby pubs, however I think this is something you should expect when staying at a place like this and is only really an issue if you’re a really light sleeper which we weren’t.
