Atmospheric, well maintained for its age. The food and beer were fantastic. The staff were brilliant. This is the oldest pub in Chester still serving beer. If your after all mod cons and perfection then don’t come here. If you want a pub with atmosphere, great food and great staff then this is the place for you.

A little bit noisy first thing in the morning but it didn’t spoil our stay.

Love this hotel. You have to stay here even if it's just to walk up the ancient wonky staircase! Beautiful room, ceiling a little low but that can't be helped as it was built in a time when people were hobbits and the wooden beams on the ceiling made me feel like I was an pixie sleeping in a grand piano. Also, mushrooms made me see a ghost called Lawrence who offered to sharpen my blade but I kept telling him that I don't carry one so he just melted into the toilet and I eventually nodded off, only to awake to the sound of two yellow finch mating on my window sill at 8am. Turns out, what had happened was, I'd fallen asleep with babeStation on the telly and I imagine as they flew past, they saw what was going down, it must have gotten them in the mood! As I approached them, they stopped, the lad finch turned his head, gave me a little nod and I thought to myself, good lad, then I drew the curtains out of respect. This is the second time I'd stayed at this hotel and the first time I'd tried hallucinogenics. Suffice to say, the first stay was less interesting but equally comfortable. Thanks all, I'll be back.

Mushrooms

Lovely period building, well kept & located centrally in the city. Early booking-in was straightforward. Food excellent and beer good quality and reasonably priced. Particularly appreciated was the reduced charge for beer orders due to my CAMRA membership. All staff helpful, friendly & polite. "Superior" room ok and as expected for the buildings age. The bathroom was delightful, really providing everything we could hope for.

We wished we'd requested a quiet, or rear located, room - as being there Thursday & Friday nights were, at times in the evening, exceptionally noisy due to a preponderance of bars all along the opposite side of the road. Our room overlooked the main road across from these bars. Our fault, perhaps? One thing, I was puzzled on the clearly evident sheet.of plywood under the mattress?

Right next to the steps up to the walls, short walk from car park, bus station and train station in one direction. Short walk to Cathedral and Rows and Grosvenor shopping centre. Quirky old building (16c) Brews real ale Great bar, quiz thursdays Breakfast can be tweaked, eg eggs cooked any way you like, leave off hash brown and get extra egg etc. You can buy food and tea and coffee all day

If you don't want full English ( meat or meat free) there's only toast or cereal as an alternative or derivatives of the full english. No fruit, pastries, fish Four poster room was advertised with picture showing old fashioned four poster. What we got was a modern pine frame around the bed, not a disaster, but a disappointment

Love this place, it was our 4th stay here and really can't fault anything. Stayed before at Christmas and was decorated beautifully and stayed on New year's eve and had a great time. The rooms are decorated lovely and are perfectly clean, housekeeping are doing a great job and staff are friendly and helpful 😀 The building itself is lovely and stands out from the rest on the street and the bar and restaurant area are decorated so nice in line with the building . Love the original staircase too with its quirky steps 😊

No negatives Obviously the stairs would be an issue for some but we quite like them 😊

Fantastic Location, right in the centre. Fabulous building. Delicious cooked breakfast. Super clean room.

Extremely low ceiling in room 7. I am 6’4” and my head touched the ceiling and I had to duck under the beams. The beds are on bed frames not a divan. Again due to my height my head touched the headboard and my feet the frame at the other end, Not comfy! The drainage on the shower in room 7 seemed to be a little blocked. I had to keep turning the shower off to allow it to drain. I did inform the staff of this, so it should be sorted.

The location of the Pied Bull is fantastic. The building itself is a beautiful historic building, wonderfully restored with a lot of charm. The premises are extremely clean and the room was large with comfortable beds. I arrived on a warm day and someone had turned on a fan in the room before I arrived, which was such a nice little touch! Breakfast was also good.

I'm 5'9 and the showerhead reached until the middle of my forehead in room 11. While this did not impact my stay in any way, it's something taller people should be aware of. I understand the layout of the shower is probably due to the structure of the building, so I don't see it as a "fault" at all. But if you're 6'5, you may struggle with it more than I did. That being said the bathroom and shower were far more spacious than I expected overall.

The Pied Bull is a perfect location to explore Chester and really good value. It is a characterful old building with great staff who were warm and welcoming. We stayed in room 17 which was a little cottage room around the corner from the pub on King Street. It was a cosy room with a junior size four poster and good sized bathroom. We visited on a very warm day and there was a fan in the room which we were very pleased about. We were a little cautious as our room backed onto the outdoor space at the pub but we needn’t have been, there was just sounds of chatter, which didn’t disturb us and the pub closes at 11pm, so we had a very peaceful and restful night. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay and wouldn’t hesitate returning.

We didn’t find anything we didn’t like. Great value.

Central position . Character building . Good value for money

Shower. Could provide Shower Cap. Really powerful lots of hot water, however only had an overhead Shower head so for anyone who may not want to wash their hair every morning a Shower cap is needed.

Great location close to all attractions easy walk to river, racecourse and city centre. The building has plenty of history and the public rooms display this very well. There is a nice bar with a good selection of drinks including beers from the in house micro-brewery, a separate and very comfortable lounge and a dining area along with a sun trap patio all well managed. We were in room 14 at the top of the building a nice sized room with a spotless en-suite which mirrored the cleanliness of the hotel. The stairs to the upper rooms are quite steep but that’s consistent with a building of this age. As for breakfast a very substantial and well cooked full English set us up for the day. A big plus are the staff they are approachable,pleasant, charming and ready to fulfill your needs. All in this made for a very pleasant break many thanks.
