I loved this quirky place, full of history & character A former hunting lodge (?) built in typical North Riding honey sandstone like the rest of this picturesque village nestled in the verdant valley. Outstanding food and service for the price; I have a feeling this little hotel will soon become very popular and expensive & I look forward to staying here again before it does.
Minor niggles: ancient dust here and there, very poor lighting; get a bigger light bulb !. That ruddy coffee maker thing instead of a kettle; what a pain in the armpit !. Noisy bar customers although that was as entertaining as it was annoying. I think the bed had seen better days.

A comfy bed and a lovely hot bath after a long walk, what more could you ask for. Breakfast was delicious and the decor was rustic and beautiful. Tasty flapjack in the room on arrival was an unexpected treat. Beautiful surroundings and the perfect pit stop on the coast to coast walk.
There was only a coffee machine in the room which wasn't ideal as neither of us drink coffee. A kettle would have been better for making tea as the hot water came out tasting like coffee even after several cycles without a coffee pod. The only thing about our stay that wasn't perfect.

Location perfect for walking and in a beautiful setting. We ate our evening meal here and had breakfast; the food was excellent 😊.
Unfortunately the walls seemed quite thin and we were next door to a very noisy group! We believe there were quite a few in their room between 8.30pm and 11pm. They also had a dog which was then barking due to them being noisy. This wasn’t the hotel’s fault but we were in bed and couldn’t hear the tv, we then switched it off but it was a while before we could get to sleep. I booked for my Husband’s birthday and as we own our own business we chose this location for the peace and quiet, I think we just dropped on a bad night.

Breakfast , in fact all the meals were amazing great selection and range of dishes. Friendly helpful staff. Its a great location surrounded by beautiful countryside.
The Roosters ! :) But i learnt after the first night to use earplugs that were provided and problem solved. I was puzzled by the cheese and biscuits in my room. I lifted the lid on the cheese dish and was surprised to see the cheese etc. However on the morning of my departure i lifted the lid to get a piece of cheese etc for the journey and only crumbs were left, do you have a ghost? I definitely did not eat it nor any members of my family,

Although the owners are very new and the kitchen renovation was underway but not finished the owner with the limited facilities cooked us dinner. Her own recipe. Fantastic. Plus she did not charge us a penny ! You simply would not experience such a generous gesture . The location is beautiful. We will be back for sure
The building is quaint. Some parts are about to be renovated so the decor is not perfect yet but work in progress

This is a genuine 18th century inn that retains its atmosphere. It is not luxurious or plastic in any way and inside you can smell the woodsmoke from the open log fires. The hospitality from the owners was great and the food offered was generous and excellent. The bar has settles and both hand pulled real ales as well as modern beers. The rooms are simple but are en suite with a coffee machine and a welcome tray of cheese and cakes. This is one for the connoisseur of tradition and is not in any way a modern beige corporate hotel. I loved it!
Very little was wrong in light of my positive comments, however whilst the rooms were clean there were some of the maintenance issues in my room.

Coast to coast day 11. This was a really friendly and quite quirky place to stay. The food and the service were amazing, both for dinner and breakfast. Food was the best I had throughout the walk. I loved the little extra touches like the bread and cheese and the Eccles cake in the room.
The room was a little cold and the shower was a bit awkward and not great even when I did get it to work. The eggs for breakfast are as fresh as you could want from their own chickens but that does mean a chorus at 4am! However I did get back to sleep and they did provide complimentary earplugs.

Great food. Staff very attentive. Good wine and beer. Location fabulous (lovely walks round about). Rustic ambience.
Room a bit poky and run down. It was rather cold in February - in fairness the hotel must be a nightmare to heat, probably Listed to nth degree so installing double glazing or putting in stoves instead of open fireplaces in the bars is probably not allowed, which is ridiculous if true.

We were doing the Coast to Coast Walk and stayed here for the night. Excellent and delicious evening meal and breakfast. Lovely room. Met the owners in the morning who were very friendly. They have recently taken over this hotel and are doing it up room by room. The meals were excellent including the packed lunch they provided for our walk the following day.

This is our 2nd 2 night stay at the horseshoe hotel. Craig is a wonderful host, very welcoming. The log fires that are lit in the pub snug on a afternoon/ evening (season permitting), this year we had room.3, a standard double with en suite. Perfectly cosy and adequate. The room has a coffee machine, which can also make tea, tv, hair dryer, complimentary soaps and shampoo, and a little snack tray on arrival, cheese, bread and this time fresh fig roll cakes.
My only issues were: The corner near the sink, could do with a little corner shelf or something, as u had nowhere to rest my make up bag/ toiletries. I sleep on the right side, the room had 1 bedside time (on the left), as a glasses wearer, this meant I had to take chance with them on the floor 😬 maybe a little flip down shelf, or something similar for the right side sleeper. Like I say, little niggles. Definitely hasn't put me off, we're booked next year, in our previous deluxe
