Hotel looks nice and is very clean and reasonably well located. Staff were great. We were called in the morning before arriving and were told the WiFi was offline and were offered free parking in compensation. However parking felt a little steep anyway at £20 a night

The room was very warm. The window opens only slightly and there is no aircon. They do offer fans but room was still too warm. We were also woken up around 7am with clattering of dishes, cutlery and trays, clattering. Which I can only guess was coming from the kitchen doing breakfast. The noise seems to travel easily throughout the building.

Staff very friendly, decor lovely, convenient parking, comfortable beds. Staff provided a fan as I was too hot. Good bathroom facilities and shower. Tea and coffee selection available. Extremely good value for money, felt like a luxurious boutique stay. They accommodated parking early before check-in which was very helpful.

Room was too warm and no ability to cool it (apart from opening the window and wedging it open). No fridge in room so had to request milk but they will deliver it each morning. Didn't like the bath products as found the smell chemical-like. Room a little small but still good value for money.

The staff could not do enough for us. They were very professional and kind. The full English breakfast definitely made you full. It was absolutely delicious. The beds were comfortable, the room was spacious and very clean. The ensuite was very modern.

The bedroom was small but really clean, it was ideal for a visit to york. Staff were polite and helpful. It was around 10- 15 minutes walk into York depending on how fast you walk.

The bedroom was really warm the window opened but wouldn't stay open . Pre Ordering breakfast cards do not work. Only one member of staff serving breafast and it was too much work for one person. A self-service breafast table with cereals and fruit juice and pastries would help. Good food produce might be sourced but not cooked to a good standard we were offered a free glass of wine or soft drinks to make up for the disappointing breakfast.Staff member did apologise for the food that was served.

Being retired inn owners we know that some places simply don't do hospitality as well as they might. We also know that some of the travelling public do not ask or book what they actually want. New Holgate met our expectations which is what you want to hear. The hotel was quite during our midweek visit and we had asked for a quiet room. We were upgraded to one of their suites facing the rear garden. It was 100% quiet! We had a small sitting room with sofas and the whole room was well appointed. The bathroom was compact and had a good shower. Fresh milk is provided for your tea. My suggestion that I shared with Nick; the bathroom needs a small shelf in the shower as you cannot place any cleaning items in there. Another hook for damp towels would be an asset. Also the radiator was placed right opposite the sink and despite not having a large arse I manged to burn myself. Not a major deal breaker but whoever had designed the bathroom had never used it. One learned to keep your 'bits' about you quickly! The bed was extremely comfortable with good linen, pillow and mattress. However we felt that king size would have fitted in the space and also made more sense...Having run our business in the US we are used to US super king beds and know that UK ones would be called a queen in the land of the ' Apprenticed Orange one'. Despite being born in Yorkshire I have to admit that the US does do beds well. All the staff had lovely smiles and refreshing personalities. I also wanted to comment on Rachel (I hope I have her name correct?) who had a lovely Italo British lilt to her accent and also great frizzy hair I would kill for! Complemented with a fantastic smile she was made to work in the hospitality sector. A great stay was had... One small observation....don't charge extra for the car park...build it into the room price and offer a discount if you don't arrive by cart as the station is an easy walk away.

Not a big issue but be careful in the bathroom of the Holgate suite and if you've had too many fish suppers the room might not be for you....

My husband and I stayed at the New Holgate with our 6 month old. The staff were accommodating and very attentive. They went out of their way to meet our breakfast requirements and provide a highchair for our little one - very much appreciated! Our breakfast was delicious with good sized portions! The hotel has been renovated to a high standard and all in a short walk to York city walls. Great stay and highly recommend!

Asking for milk for tea in the room…perhaps a small flask could be offered, dated with fresh milk daily for occupants to use in their rooms.

Quiet, very well appointed, superbly friendly helpful staff - nothing was ever too much bother for them all, nice location - lovely Georgian style building externally but ultra modern internally- handy parking - mid point location between the town and the race course

Stairs - tbf we were on the top floor(3rd) the fact that on the hottest day of the year the sash windows would only open 4 to 6 “ and we had to find something to prop them open Also I think this maybe a fire safety issue - the only way out of the room appeared to be into the building - also the outside area is well appointed but the car park is not screened off sufficiently so you felt as if you were sitting in the car park - a couple of small screen perhaps?

Beautiful really stylish the room was large with huge tv in the lounge part of the room with lots of channels no extra charge with a comfy couch and a big comfy bed for my pooch who was treat like the vip she is! Breakfast prepared for her by the chef and the breakfast for myself was so delicious best ever really the produce is locally sourced and really good quality ingredients. They do cheese and meat boards that are also delicious and don’t cost the earth. Looking forward to going back when they have established themselves more and offer dinner which they did mention is the plan. Nothing was too much for them I had a lovely stay and extended it a night as I loved it that much. It’s spotless too I can’t forget that, bathroom lovely with nice products to try out which they do sell also. Thanks everyone me and daisy loved our stay

Staff was great. The Yorkshire Breakfast was very nice, mattress was probably the best I've ever slept on (I want to buy one now). Shower was very good, too.

There is room for a few improvements, for example: making it possible to open the window in order to get some fresh air inside (it opens about 10cm, and we had to put a shoe underneath for it to stay open); adding an extra towel hanger in the bathroom. The bathroom is an interesting one, as it was done to a high standard, but with some odd choices -- small sink with big tap that barely leaves room for hands, for example.

Although room was lovely , comfortable and clean there was a lot of traffic noise as it is at the front of the building which is on a fairly busy road. We were asked if we wanted a room refresh which is normally done automatically. We said yes but it wasn’t done so had to ask for more coffee, sugar etc. Staff were lovely but felt emptying bins , refilling coffee, airing room should have been done.
