The hotel is within a short walking distance of the city centre so everything is easy to get to. Lovely scenery...view of the river from the courtyard behind the inn. Each room has its own key box so self check in was a simple process. The room was clean and had everything we needed for our stay....heaters kettle and tea/coffee,lots of clothes hangers, toiletries and plenty of toilet rolls! The room was a generous size and so was the bathroom.
Really the only issue was that the floor boards in the room above were very noisy when people walked around. Also a lot of electric cables around the floor could have been better placed.

I liked the Watergate Inn as soon as I walked through the Archway and onto old cobbled entrance and the "mews type individual rooms....hanging baskets /planters filled with lovely flower's/ plants. All the way down to a beer garden type area with what I believed would have been mill/ factory with the secondary river to the River Ouze running as far as the eye could see.The staff were all excellent, nothing to much trouble ,they all fell in love with my wee dog Rafferty and we were made to feel so welcome. The Watergate Inn was so well situated to get around York, walking my wee dog....I loved my stay and I will most definitely visit again .. .soon.
I can truly state that the Watergate Inn is a GEM of a find ....I loved my stay and I will recommend to many friends. I'm not going to find fault when there was none to be found..

This place is a little gem. The location is amazing, and the staff are top-notch. We had breakfast both mornings of our stay, and they were delicious. Good quality food and cooked well. The room we had was small, but as we were only sleeping there, it didn't matter. It was clean and comfortable. There is car parking and is gated at night so felt very safe too. Everything is within walking distance. My second visit here and will definitely be returning!!
I would have liked Yorkshire tea with our breakfasts. You get it in your room but the tea served with breakfast was not great. The ladys toilets of the pub had a very unpleasant smell. They looked clean though.

If you're looking for 5-star accommodation, then this is not for you. If you're looking for a great, cost-effective and a superb location, 20 minutes walk from the Station, but central to York and all the main sights / attractions etc then this is great!! The room was comfortable, clean and had the usual drink-making facilities, with soaps, shampoos and shower gels being provided as well. The pub has a great range of drinks and the food was very good and reasonably priced. I ate both evenings of my stay. The Chicken Gyros and the Italian style Chicken in creamed mushroom sauce were both tasty and filling. This was my second time staying at The Watergate, and it was great to have been welcomed back by Monika, who was very polite and attentive throughout. Thank you. Karo and Rebecca too were also very friendly and polite, making for an overall great stay. Thank you too. I am already looking forward to using the Watergate for my next visits to York.
Bearing in mind this is very reasonably priced, there were very minor cosmetic things in the room which could be sorted, shower door handle, dodgy sink plug, but really, neither bothered me nor stopped me from using the sink or shower. I'm just being nit-picky.

I had dinner when I arrived Saturday pm. I have coeliac disease, although they don't have a gluten free menu, they were very careful preparing my meal. the food was really good and there was lots of it. I had breakfast Monday morning and again everything was cooked to perfection. Karin ? ( sorry if that is wrong) was a very happy, helpful angel, ordering taxis and pointing me in the right direction. Hotel is on the city open top bus route, please try it, it is a great way to get around the city.
Enjoyed every part of my stay, sadly I had to leave and go home

The location was perfect, everything pretty much within a 10 minute walk. Free parking, beer garden, the shower was good and powerful, loved the courtyard setting of the rooms
The bed and mattress was a little well worn and old, now I think most people are used to memory foam mattresses, it took a little getting used to again, the free parking was a bonus, but the entrance to the car park was extremely narrow, had to hold our breath going through but we made it. We was lucky to get a space, but we wasn't asked for our car details, so pretty much anyone could park there it seems and it would have been very disappointing if we couldn't get a space as it was one of the reasons we booked it. But all in all, we would stay again. Good value for money.

Excellent location in the heart of the city! Bonus features included the outdoor space overseeing the canal and the large family room my kids could run around at. The beds were very comfortable and the staff were very accommodating. The latter is particularly important as I travelled with a toddler and a 5 year old with autism who can be loud. It was an excellent stay for us!
I travelled with two kids and I had to leave the buggy in the pub. I didn’t mind this, but bringing the buggy upstairs was out of the question. Maybe a buggy parking area would be a good idea so guests can come in and out with their little ones as they please. I luckily didn’t need the buggy past a certain time, but if I had, I would have been unable to access it until the morning.

Location was excellent. I really liked the room and felt it was very pretty, light and airy. The toilet facilities were a lot better than I had expected and very clean and came with soap and shower gel. The wifi was fast and useful. The staff were friendly and helpful.
The only thing I would have preferred is if there was a breakfast. However, the staff were very informative on why we didn't get breakfast and said that they hadn't yet got a chef for breakfast yet so I didn't find it too much of an issue anyway, especially considering there were lots of breakfast places nearby such as 'Spring'.

It has an amazing location right in the centre of York with free parking. It would be amazing when the weather is warmer and advantage could be taken of the beer garden area. The room had everything we needed, including tea and coffee making facilities. The quilt was really warm and the combination of blinds and curtains helped to keep some of the cold out.
We didn't get details of the WiFi password on arrival and couldn't find it in the room. It was really cold when we visited and, despite the radiator being st full blast, the room was cold and the bathroom was baltic. Not sure if there was a hairdryer and there was nothing vegan on the breakfast menu - not even beans on toast.
