There are two noticeable things I want to say about this property. The first is that I have never had a warmer welcome when arriving at a hotel. The staff that greeted us could not have been more welcoming. They gave us a thorough intro to the hotel and then gave us a print out of local places they recommended. The second thing is how clean the room was. It was spotless. Not a streak or anything in sight. We loved our stay here. We have stayed in Portland before and we’re located more downtown, but this opened up a whole new part of Portland we weren’t aware of, so much so that in a five night stay, we only ate downtown twice. Places of note for us were the Tadem Bakery opposite, yes there is a line, there always will be, but it goes quicker than you think so don’t be put off. Another is Bramhall just down the street. A basement bar with great food and drink. And if the Maine Mariners ice hockey is in town. Get a ticket, it’s great fun. We will be back in Portland one day, and we will come back to the Frances.

This is really being picky and isn’t actually the fault of the Frances, but if they could, choose a different taxi provider. We asked reception to book us a cab over 24 hours in advance to the train station, well in advance of our train back to Boston for a flight. It was so late that we had to scream at the guard to hold the train whilst running with all of our luggage.

I really liked the overall vibe of the hotel, from it's stained glass windows, art, sitting room with fireplace, games and books, and the very welcoming staff. We loved the sheets and pillows -- so soft and comfy. We liked that it was easy to get to from the celtics game and restuarant we choose. We either walked or took a lift.

The room was nice but could have used a few repairs to the bathroom -- the hot ran out after my partner took a shower, so that was a miss. Also, the shower head appeared to have a knob to adjust the flow, but it had been broken off. The shower tile was once very pretty, but was in need of some grouting repairs (lots of chips and missing pieces). The bathroom wood floor was very worn, and it either needs to be refinished or replaced. Lastly, I know that older architecture is smaller, but definitely would recommend a small stool or some type of additional shelf be added to the bathroom for toiletries. Also, I would add a small table by the chair in the room. Also, a 'landing strip' by the exit (one that folds up would work).

A fantastic building with lots of history, conveniently located halfway between the train station and the waterfront. Close to downtown and the Old Port for a nice walk. Terrific reception staff, and a lovely glass of bubbles when checking in. Room was very cosy, with good wifi connection.

Hotel communications by email and texts are automated and a bit repetitive. Furthermore, they didn't take my response into account (e.g., multiple messages about car parking when I answered that I wasn't driving). Floorboards in the rooms are squeaking loudly, which fortunately wasn't too much of an issue as the people upstairs neither went to bed too late nor woke up too early.

The Francis is a stately but small hotel walking distance from Portland port and most of town, but out of the mainstream. The parking is free (unusual!). The room was sizeable and they give you a voucher to use towards breakfast in their affiliate hotel across the street - which was ok. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the basic amenities were good.

This is a lovely restored building. We really appreciated the care taken around colour choice and comfort. We received a very warm welcome and were upgraded to a King size room.

I did feel rather annoyed about the additional charges on top of the basic rate quoted. Hotel charge and tourist tax. That said it didn’t diminish our experience whilst we were there.

The Francis Hotel was very clean and charming. The staff was helpful. The hotel is across the street from a great breakfast spot. We went bike riding, so the Francis was in a good location for that- not too far from the trails. Otherwise we walked to the tourist areas- about 20 minutes away.

The Francis was a long walk from the more tourist area, but there is an art museum and a park nearby. The parking is very tight.

The Francis is located in a quiet neighborhood, but it is still within walking distance of many restaurants, bars, and shops. It is also a short drive to the Old Port and other popular tourist destinations. The rooms and common areas at The Francis are very clean and well-maintained. The beds are comfortable and the linens are fresh and clean. The Francis is housed in a historic building that has been beautifully restored. The hotel has a lot of character and charm.

I did not have any real dislikes about The Francis. It was a great place to stay.

great location, nice room good price. Very good restaurants, bars, coffee shops only steps away. Minutes walk to museums, theatre and old port. We parked the car and the hotel and did not need to move it all weekend. Staff were very helpful and attentive.

Would have liked gauze curtains on the windows for better privacy. The door to the toilet did not close properly. Common faculties a bit sparse.

Beautiful old building and neighborhood, with helpful, friendly hotel staff. Wonderful, small restaurant right next door, and very popular bakery and coffee shop just across the street. Very comfortable bed.

Neighborhood is not as walkable as we had thought, in terms of being near shops and main Portland attractions. The waterfront area is only a quick (5-10 minute) cab ride away, though.

The bed was extremely comfortable! We were in Maine a week traveling along the coast, staying at a different place each night. The bed at The Francis was the most comfortable of them all. We also enjoyed the bathroom, big, sparkling clean, and the shower was absolutely inviting.

We couldn’t change the temperature in our room. We tried the wall thermostat and the remote. Nothing we did changed the temperature.
