Super pet friendly, there were no pet fees and the staff all seemed to genuinely love dogs. I was surprised that they were able to keep the building in such good condition while maintaining its historical charm. The Inn has the most extensive continental breakfast that I have ever seen, including gf and vegan options.

Parking in the back was limited. I appreciated the fact that they had reserved spots at the strip mall close by, but it was a little annoying. Because of this, and the fact that it is a historical building without an elevator, I would not recommend this place to someone with mobility issues.

We stayed at this property for 2 nights in July. It's a charming historical property with tall ceilings, thick walls, wide doors and steep staircases. There are a lot of stairs, and no elevator, so if you have mobility issues ask for a room on the ground floor. Our room was large, nicely decorated with beautiful furniture. The breakfast was very basic (some pastries, yogurt and coffee). The property is a little bit far from the old town (about 30-40 min. walk), but it can be managed with some planning for transportation or finding a reasonable parking in town. The Inn's staff was friendly and informative. We loved our visit to Portland.

This was a surprise find, after looking at the hotels in the Old Port I found that parking was $40 per night. So I opted for this hotel with free parking even though it was a bit farther away from the port. It feels like an old European inn, which is a positive. A generous continental breakfast is served every morning, cookies in the afternoon, coffee and tea all day, computer in the lobby, The staff was really friendly and helpful, they held on to my laptop until I realized it was missing. It costs $$15-20 round trip on Uber to the waterfront, that combined with the lower rate made it a great value. It's also nice as you can take your car and go visit other parts of the city without additional garage fees. If you like comfortable, old school feel, out of the tourist track, etc. I would highly recommend this hotel.

The only thing is it doesn't have an elevator so you have to climb the stairs. But they're very clear in explaining that before you book, and it's good to climb a couple of flights of stairs each day anyway.

Booked very last minute for a stay in Portland and we were absolutely thrilled to find this room at the Inn at St John at this price point, considering everything else we saw for one night was $300 or more. It's a great location, though a little far (30 min walk or 5 min drive) from the Old Port and Congress Street, however much closer than some of the cheaper hotels by the airport or just outside Portland. We opted for the room with a shared bathroom which we were worried about but ended up being absolutely fine, and our room had a sink in it. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast in the morning is a great touch. Overall really pleased with our stay and so thankful we were able to find such a good value room last minute during the summer holiday.

The bed we had was pretty small and not the most comfortable, but was totally fine for our one night. Parking is also a bit of a mission, they have some spots right in front of the hotel which is great if you can get one, but once they're full you have to park in the overflow lot which is about a 2-3 minute walk away. It's also a little far from things but to save hundreds on the price of the hotel room it was worth it for us.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with a “separate bathroom.” But it was right across the hall & I was the only guest assigned to it- meaning only I had a key to it. I’d prefer an en-suite bathroom but to save money I’ll definitely book this type of accommodation again. The bed & floor both creaked a bit- but I was very comfortable. I’d stay here again to enjoy the charm of a Victorian B&B. The breakfast was very basic with pre-packaged items, only a few fresh fruits. You could prep a bowl of cereal or toast a bagel, however. Coffee, tea, water and even a few snacks were available 24/7. Location was a bit of a walk to Old Port, but close to other attractions. Parking was no problem even though we got there a bit late in the evening.

Just know you’re staying in a historic building. I liked it & it was a good value, but others might prefer a more “hotel chain” feel. This is much more unique!

I extremely like the staff. They bend over backwards to help the guests.

The beds need replacement, or at least flipped over. They sink down. Been nursing a back injury since my last stay. It's getting better, but shouldn't have happened in the first place.

Comfortable beds, cozy rooms, and very clean. There is a free breakfast (a basic one but there are plenty of options). Free parking, although very limited. The shower has plenty of warm water (but be careful because it gets REALLY hot). It is in a quiet part of town. The room was quite cheap, and we're happy with what we got for what we paid.

The room we stayed in had a skylight (and looks like it was the only room with one, judging by satellite imagery), and unfortunately it made the room quite bright due to outside lights. It is also not super quiet at night, you can hear doors opening and closing really well, and the walls are thin, meaning you can hear other guests talking too.

The breakfast was basic, but it did include a variety of foods. The coffee was not good and had a bitter taste every day. There were hard-boiled eggs, oatmeal, muffins and bagels with peanut butter and cream cheese, along with sweet muffins and doughnuts. Yogurt, string cheese, and croissants rounded out the choices. The staff was caring and helpful, and always friendly and accommodating when needs were addressed.

Coffee, very noisy street traffic on Congress with sirens and loud, heavy trucks with noise seemingly evident at all times. Our room faced the street, so that was not good at all. The levers and handles appeared very loose (room, dresser, and bath), and lighting in room was inadequate. Our housekeeper never emptied our trash until we let the staff know on the fifth day. She also never tidied the room; unsure if she was supposed to smooth the bed so we did, nor replenish the bath toiletries. We kept our room very picked up and clean, but it would have been nice for her to check trash, towel replenishment in room, and maybe quickly vacuum at least once (esp after going to beach and returning with sandy shoes).

Very clean, a walking distance from artists quarter, restaurants near by. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Parking on site. Very nice room.

Do note that the building is rather old: No lift. The bathroom and shower were really small (I'm 1.83 / 6 ft and had to band down to wash my hair).

We loved the charm of the Inn. The room was beautiful and the bathroom in our room was nice. The staff we interacted with very little but everyone was pleasant to talk with. The presentation of the breakfast areas was well done. Plenty of coffee choices were offered with fresh donuts and bagels and a fruit basket.

I noticed that some of the rooms had bathrooms that were outside their rooms and I was very happy that our room did not have that! Breakfast was available but it was more of a glorified pre packaged continental breakfast. The only protein offered was pre packaged peanut butter and packed hard boiled eggs. Parking in the lot was very limited. I didn't want to leave after we checked in because I was afraid that I wouldn't get a parking spot if we left because there were only 2 available spaces when we got there. The bed was clean and made well, but slightly too firm for us and we didn't sleep well and was woken up at 330 am alarmingly by very loud sirens. I'm assuming from the nearby hospital?
