The StandardX Hotel has it all—modern facilities with a playful mid-century pop aesthetic, a convenient location next to the 96 tram stop and Rose Street Makers Market, and a fantastic rooftop with incredible city views. The pet-friendly accommodations were perfect for our Samoyed, and the service was absolutely stellar.

While The StandardX is amazing overall, there are a few quirks worth noting. The bathroom is separated from the room by a transparent glass feature, so privacy goes out the window if you’re staying with friends. Also, the shower design isn’t the best—water seeps out onto the rest of the bathroom floor, soaking the bath mat. Another surprise was discovering that the gym is actually Snap Fitness next door, which you can only access by borrowing a key fob from the front counter—something the hotel didn’t communicate clearly beforehand. Lastly, the drinks and snacks in the hotel’s mini shop were pretty limited, which was a bit disappointing.

Everything at this new hotel is thoughtfully conceived and beautifully designed: a deep wash basin in the bathroom accommodated some late-trip laundering, while the ample counter space around it was perfect for unpacking toiletries. Tea and coffee service was neatly organized into drawers. A complimentary umbrella stands waiting by the door. A bluetooth speaker sits on the night stand. On the roof is a wonderful deck, fully furnished, with sweeping views of the city. Downstairs in the lobby, a help-yourself boutique offers wine and spirits, snacks, sweets, and a curated selection of gifts. A revolving red door marks the hotel's entrance among the blackened streets of Fitzroy with a lusty mystique that was most welcome after an evening of cocktails and a gentle rain. Staff were lovely. Among the best of our two weeks in Australia.

Just wish we'd have stayed longer!

The concierge team couldn't be any better - they were friendly, and often went above and beyond to help us. You are in excellent hands with them throughout your stay. The hotel's decoration is also beautifully curated and was delightfully whimsical. Thoughtful touches such as chairs in the lift area, blankets on the rooftop and select curtains to help zone, merged together to form an inviting atmosphere. The guest-only rooftop bar was a highlight for us! The cocktails suited the distant sparkling lights of the city and the warm blankets ensured we didn't catch a chill in the autumn evening. The room was very comfortable. The bed was a dream to sleep on and you get two cozy pillows. The towels are also fluffy and water pressure in the shower strong. There's plenty of bench space for creams/make up etc. The robes here are elite. The coffee plunger and Industry Beans bag were thoughtful (albeit I didn't know how you to use it). I liked the glassware provided in the room. I LOVED that you could open the window in the room. It makes such a difference to other hotels and I really appreciated the double blinds option too.

After hours, you need to access the hotel by a side door for security (good). However, this door isn't a soft close and slams shut. We stayed on the first floor and it banged so violently that the room shook with a resounding metal 'gong' and we were woken up multiple times throughout the night. Make sure you request a room on a higher floor! We stayed 4 nights and I'm not sure if there's a room cleaning schedule that meant it wasn't a full service every day? The bathroom bin was emptied and the bed also made every day, but the carpet didn't look like it had been hoovered more than once (same crumbs/dirt). There was also a day when the tea/coffee hadn't been refilled. More specific to the restaurant vs the hotel, but 20 AUD for a plate of 3 average har gow is wild.

Cool design, very modern. Bed was sooooo comfy. So many hangers provided for clothes which was nice! Location was easy enough to get to, and especially on the weekends with the flea markets right at your doorstep. The mini bar in the lobby was cool and had a good selection, not too over priced either. The rooftop bar was cosy and nice! Drinks were pretty good too!

The tv barely had anything on, no netflix or anything. We struggled to cast apple devices on the tv from our phones.. nothing to watch. Housekeeping wasn’t fantastic.. at one point we found some of our clothes stashed underneath the pillows?? Not an issue but.. strange. Sometimes the tea bags were not refilled. Not a huge problem though.

Location is good in a upmarket but gritty suburb. Public transport is very convenient. Decor in the public areas is very nice. The eating and sitting areas are really successful. Staff are very friendly and helpful. In the room, the double shower is a very nice bonus. Towelling and bed are superb. I’ll be staying again in a week.

Small quibbles: The room fittings are good but not exceptional. Only knobs to hang towels which means they don’t dry properly. Not enough bench space for toiletries. Sink too deep. There’s been an attempt to be different with the decor and fittings, which is to be applauded, but it’s not as functional as it could be. No deal breakers though, I’ll stay again.

Room was excellent, a bit on the small side but incredibly well designed and furnished. Bed was super comfortable, and location is excellent and close to trams on either side to get to the city. The rooftop has stunning views, and love how it's only for guest access.

Service could be better, found checking in and out a bit abrupt with not much conversation or explanation or follow ups after a nights stay or enquiring if it was pleasant or not. The service was quite a let down in comparison to how beautiful the hotel was. Lack of facilities such as a gym or pool, the offering was quite a long walk to a neighbourhood gym down the street which wasn't that pleasant. The bathrooms have very little counterspace but in saying that it's not a very big negative! All in all still a beautiful experience and a wonderful design hotel.

Beautiful Roof top balcony with a bar, which is only available to guests. Spacious rooms and big comfy beds and blankets with plenty of storage/moving space and natural light. Big tv with streaming capabilities. Super quiet, never heard the neighboring guests. Plenty of good breakfast lunch and dinner options in the area, with particularly good coffee and pastry options. Two tram lines that connect seamlessly with the express trams servicing the AusGP track.

Pillows were fluffy but full of air. kept waking up throughout the night due to uncomfortable feeling from the deflated pillows, even after stacking two pillows for more stability/structure

StandardX was well situated right between two tram lines. It was right in the heart of Fitzroy with plenty of shops and eateries around. A short tram ride into the CBD which provided plenty of things to see and do! Added bonus was a 24/7 concierge which felt really safe and handy to have.

There was a slight miscommunication regarding taking out an extra deposit due to their change in system which prompted my bank to flag their transaction as fraudulent. But after a quick pop down to the reception for a chat - it was resolved.

Location is amazing! It is very close to where my family live, but access to everything is perfect. The foyer and lounge spaces are welcoming and comfortable and a great space to have a drink in the evening. It was my birthday and i appreciated the note and treats left in the room by the hotel staff. Communication regarding a voucher my daughter arranged was clear and a lovely surprise. Rooftop view was lovely and a great space to relax as well. Breakfast was delicious and service very efficient and friendly.

I think the rooftop could be staffed to some degree, even if it is not in service until the weekend. It had been raining and everything was wet and remained so for a day at least. The furniture and seating could have been dried perhaps? There were also glasses and dishes left by guests who had used the space and enjoyed the view, but again, it looked very messy and not what you'd expect given the high standard of presentation of all other spaces in the hotel.

Really brand new rooms, lovely staff, super clean, felt hip and trendy and great neighborhood

One big piece of feedback and my only complaint- there should be a deadbolt or lock that only opens from the inside on all rooms. This is a big safety component that a lot of people look for to feel safe- especially women solo travelers. There have been a lot of stories shared lately about hotel staff accessing rooms- sometimes accidentally- but sometimes intentionally and for creepy reasons. The staff here seemed great, but it’s usually a big no no for me to stay anywhere without an internal lock, because you just never know. When staff has keys to tap into any room, it doesn’t make you feel comfortable, like someone could come in at any point in the night.
