Grettir Guesthouse is in a great location near the old town and shopping street. The beds were comfortable and our attic room was a good size and nicely decorated. It is a traditional type corrugated iron house which has been split into two areas to stay in. We stayed in the upper section which had 5 rooms (two of these rooms are upstairs in attic area - which can be tricky if you wanted to access toilet at night). The kitchen / dining area is small, seating only 4 people. The kitchen does not have a stovetop or oven but there is a microwave. The one combined shower/ toilet is shared between all rooms. There is no parking available but you can temporarily park at park of house to remove luggage from car and then park car on street a few blocks away ( out of P paid area) or else pay for parking.

Very good neighborhood, just a few mins from the grand church and many amazing restaurants nearby. Apart from the location, the rooms were comfortable and had good lighting. Beds were good and the heater inside the room is extremely strong. The common area has the kitchen and the washroom. Overall clean, apart from some utensils which maybe some other guests did not clean well. The upper floor rooms have one sharing toilet between 4-5 rooms and the lower (basement) floor has one toilet sharing between 2 rooms. Not that bad for us as most of the times we woke up quite early and used the toilets and went for day trips. Walking to the main bus stop for airport buses and day trip excursion buses takes around 14-15 mins of walking from the guesthouse. We had good privacy in the guesthouse too. Check in process super smooth and wifi is very good. Luggage storage on the day of check out was super easy as with the code of the door they give you, you can keep your bags for some hours easily.

Overall everything was great. We didn't find the hair dryer in the upper floor toilet but we had another friend in the lower floor so we could use it. But it can be nice to fix the hair dryer in the upper floor toilet too.

I'm so glad I booked this accommodation for my short stay in Iceland's capital. Centrally located, was easy to return for a quick break from all parts of central Reykjavík. Everything you may need (pubs, restaurants, shops, meeting point for tours) were in walking distance (max. 10 minutes). The host was super kind, check-in/check out could not have been easier. During my stay, I shared the house with other younger travellers. I liked my selected room, it was equipped with basically everything you may need, and so was the kitchen for making your own dishes/tea/coffee. I can fully recommend to book your accommodation at Grettir.

Great location, cozy hostel and excellent communications with the remote staff

Can be a little noisy with people going in and out the bathroom at night.

Great location and our room was fantastic. The location is absolutely perfect for a stay in the city centre. The room is big and cosy. The house is nicely decorated and clean.

The kitchen is under equipped. There is nothing to make food (ie : electric stove, microwave, gas stove…) and only a kettle to make instant noodles and a camping gas is available. Makes stays longer than one night a bit complicated. Something that all guesthouses suffer from, so I didn’t not take it into account in my ratings but it has to be said : Some guests can be dirty, unfortunately that’s something to take into consideration when booking a room in the guesthouse. So for the love of god, if you’re a dirty guest please get a grip and remember you’re not alone in the guesthouse so keep it clean for others. Thank you.

Very comfortable large bed, sink in the room, good location:)

In the room the main light was very weak, quite dark in the room (had to keep blinds down all the time as window was on ground level in front of big parking lot).

Nice sized room. I liked the sink in my room too brush teeth, etc. Spacious WC with plenty of hot water. Great downtown location. Close enough walk to everything downtown yet not loud in the morning! Kitchen was fully stocked with everything to make a nice meal for ourselves. Met a worker, very kind

The code for the door was wonky it worked most of the time but when we returned to change our clothes from travel to theatre clothing the code wasn't working at all. Another guest was having the same issue. They called and management said they'd send someone out to fix it but it'd be at least 20 minutes. We forewent changing our clothes and the guest on the phone offered to message us the results. A few minutes later he texted that suddenly it was working fine. No other issues, but it was odd.

I couldn't find the door at first, and looked upstairs, but the host answered on the phone immediately. My neighbours were really kind, and we got along - that's a big part of the experience as well. Nice large bathroom and cozy kitchen. The bed and pillow was really comfortable and had a mattress with memoryfoam. The radiator helped when it got cold and worked effectively. Really centered and close to everything.

Noise from the upstairs can be a bit annoying. There is not a lot of insulation, so when they were walking around it was loud. But people were in general quite.

the location was great

Another toilet would be great, because there is only one bathroom with toilet available. There is also no hairdryer if you want to wash your hair it is difficult without a hairdryer, especially for women. I received an old email with an old code. I wrote to the person who gave me the email that I couldn't open the door with the code. Three hours later I received a response saying that I had received an old email. Luckily some woman was there and opened the door for us.

Great location right by the main street. Really warm and cosy and comfy bed. Coffee machine and shampoo and body wash in the shower which is always a plus when travelling. Nice little place.

It was a bit noisy. The people in the flat above us were stomping about late at night, and the people in the room next door were noisy in the mornings when leaving for tours. I know this can't be helped sometimes, but I would recommend earplugs. The bathroom was nice but did not have the cleanest showers; again, as it's a shared bathroom, it could be because of the other people, not necessarily the cleaner.
