We spent two wonderful weeks in one of the bungalows at Villa Afonso, and I would like to share an honest and detailed review of our stay. Location Villa Afonso is situated on a hillside (as is 99% of everything in Madeira), in the upper part of Câmara de Lobos. The property is surrounded by a banana orchard, vineyards, and lush greenery. From the main patio/terrace in front of the villa, there is a beautiful view of the nearby hills, houses, and the ocean. The Bungalow We stayed in the first, probably slightly smaller bungalow. Both bungalows are located behind the main villa. Ours consisted of a bedroom with a kitchenette, a bathroom, and stairs leading to an upper balcony. From the balcony, you can admire the surrounding villages scattered along the hillsides, with a partial side view of the ocean. There are no windows in the bungalow, but two sets of balcony doors (the entrance and the upper terrace doors) provide sufficient daylight. The furnishings include a TV, wardrobe, chest of drawers, and bedside tables. The kitchenette is fully equipped with a small fridge, microwave, and two electric burners. As for the smell – I agree with some earlier reviews: the scent of old stone is noticeable at first. We solved it easily by buying a scented plug-in, and after that, it was barely perceptible. Insects – I was worried after reading some reviews and even brought insect spray, but we never had to use it. We didn’t encounter any issues at all. Towels can be changed freely whenever needed. Breakfast The continental breakfast was more than enough for us. Every morning there were three types of bread, two kinds of cold cuts, cheese, several kinds of yoghurts, cereals, jam portions, butter, delicious fruit salad, vegetables, dried dates or prunes, and eggs (either hard-boiled or scrambled). Each day also included either cake or cookies. Of course, there was also juice, a selection of teas, and freshly ground coffee from the machine.

Just two small things could be improved: the pillows could be replaced with new ones, and the shower curtain would benefit from an update.

The location was fantastic, short drive to Funchal and also nearby to the VE4 main road that takes you to the other side of the island. Room was spacious, lots of storage, had a beautiful view, and large TV! Shower had good pressure and hand soap/shower gel was provided. Communal areas were large and inviting, breakfast was just enough. Afonso was polite and professional, he also recommended a local restaurant (Viola) which is a uphill walk from the property - good food. Would recommend and return.

The bed had a few over sheets/covers, not sure if they are changed/cleaned per guest. Our room continuously had bugs but as there was no dustpan/sweeper it was impossible to remove them so the room felt dirty after a couple days. A small dustpan under the sink would have been perfect. Bathroom is tired, needs updating. Pool was slightly cold but may be cause we used it on a cold rainy day - if the sun was out it would have been heaven.

The view is amazing from the yard. There is a big swimming pool and a large smart tv in the room. The breakfast is very good, just like the rest of the island :) also plenty of parking space, and non intrusive hosts. A pleasant stay overall. Visit Viola Restaurant for great food - espetadas and Camara do Lobos old town for a beautiful tiny village.

I think it’s not well priced for what it offers, you can find 4 star hotels at that price with lots more amenities… there was noise all night from a municipal water pump outside our window.

Vila Afonso is a hidden gem - it was our little slice of paradise! The view and property itself are just out of this world, the property grounds are so beautifully maintained that it's wonderful to just lounge about in the garden all day. The owner was most helpful and kind, making sure that everything was in order, and he even provided us with lactose free milk for breakfast upon request!

I am still yet to get used to how firm Portuguese beds are, but it's not really a fault of the property at all! The one small suggestion I have is to add a bit more variety to the breakfast, but that's just because we were there for 5 days and it got a little repetitive :)

Great location if you are driving as it is away from the city but still only a 10 minute drive. Such a beautiful place and garden with an amazing view and a lovely indoor salt water pool. The owners are super lovely and are there if you need them but they leave you to it which we really liked. Parking spaces available and lovely local restaurants that do amazing drinks and food. We stayed at the bungalow and it was so lovely with a little balcony in the top area. Breakfast was simple but nice enough.

Only 1 thing that wasn't expected, and this is not a reflection on the hosts and perhaps cannot be helped. As this is a country house, every morning and every night we found countless centipedes, millipedes, massive spiders and cockroaches. I know it is difficult to help this, but perhaps it would be useful to seal the walls properly or regularly check to see where they come in from as the rooms are abit old (but very authentic). It wasn't a massive issue but to wake up everyday to different bugs on the bed and floor got abit much after the 3rd night. As I said, this is not a reflection on the hosts or overall stay, but this might be useful for some to know.

We loved the location of Vila Afonso. Our room was large and comfortable and had a fabulous view from the roof deck. The grounds are lovely and pool was refreshing. Breakfast every morning was plentiful.

The room had a musty smell and ceiling in bathroom had mold on it. We had to close the unscreened window in bathroom because the mosquitos were coming in.

Great location to travel around the island with convenient parking on the property. Bungalow was great to stay and kitchen had all the essentials. The roof covered swimming pool was very convenient and great to relax at the end of the day. There are a few very nice restaurants 5-10 mins walk! Very nice and discreet hosts.

Interior decoration could have been done with a bit more taste to make the room feel nicer and I would have like a bit more diversity on the breakfast buffet.

Amazing location and a view! Very cosy, small place. Beautiful breakfast spot. The property has private parking. Very nice host with great information.

You live basically in garden so the bugs are part of experience. A small dustpan under the sink to clean the bugs would have been perfect.

A cozy b and b on top of a hill with a beautiful view on the ocean combined with a great breakfast. Very friendly owners that are always willing to help! We did enjoy our stay!
