Lovely boutique hotel right in the heart of the river district. Staff are incredible, the breakfast was wonderful - great coffee, loads of fresh fruit and bread. You can request eggs or yogurt if you like. Everyone went out of their way to help with reservations for dinner or lunch, advice on things to do or see. The hotel is located on small street just off teh water, so pay attention to when you arrive and leave - morning is best since there are fewer people on the streets. Easy to catch an Uber a block up on the square. Hotel will call a taxi for you and if you are heading to the airport, I definitely suggest this. It cost us about 30 euros but was worth not having to worry about dragging a bag up the street (in rain!). The customer experience at GHD shines and is why you come here.

While we loved it, the rooms are very small so be prepared. We stayed on the first floor facing the river and it was a tight fit - think similar to a cruise ship. The floors above looked like the rooms were are bit bigger, I suggest you try the second floor facing the water and you will get a little balcony. Being the heart of this area also means that it can be a bit noisy at night (though the windows are pretty sound proof). I would definitely go back to this hotel, but would get a different room.

Our welcome by Louisa was lovely, so friendly and helpful. Allowed to room by 11.30 am. Hugo was great and I wanted to adopt the lovely Luiz on duty most evenings. Location in old town is excellent. Breakfasts were lovely with a beautifully arranged fresh fruit platter each day, cheeses, cured meats, large basket of breads, yoghurt and granola on offer, boiled or scrambled eggs. Good fresh fruit juice, coffee and tea. Croissants and the Portuguese custard tarts we love. Just 6 rooms. Ours was not overlooking river, but tiny back street. Our choice as has been on river cruise week before!. There was hardly any noise from restaurants if windows closed. Cleaners excellent also.

Nothing. Everything excellent.

I enjoyed the breakfast very much, and the location. I also had a quiet room, and the air conditioner works great. We especially liked Luis, who is a superb staff member at Guest House Douro. His hospitality was over the top and much appreciated.

This guest house is considered a splurge in Rick Steves' Portugal guide. So perhaps I was expecting too much. The interior of our room is looking a bit worn out. For example, the carpet is worn and has bleach stains. There is a large hole in the wall. The bathroom vanity cabinet top and door are water damaged. The toilet paper holder is hanging off the wall. The wood veneer on the door is chipped all along the bottom. The red coverlets look very worn out. The hose for the hand-held shower needs daily cleaning because it has accumulated mold. The slippers for guest use are not new and not clean, and the bath robe did not smell nice, probably from being stored in a drawer for too long. And for me, the mattress was too hard and not comfortable, but my husband liked the hard mattress.

Located in an old historical building, it's centrally located near lots of attractions & facilities, and walking distance to some fabulous restaurants. One of only 8 rooms, our bedroom was petite but exceptionally functional with a wonderful outlook over the river and Vila Nova de Gaia area. Breakfast made to order was served in a small but wonderfully decorated room where you got to meet some of the other guests. Staff, Louisa & Philip were absolutely delightful and went out of their way to recommend attractions and local restaurants, particularly those frequented by locals as apposed to tourists. Would highly recommend.

Nothing!

Guest House Douro was an absolutely ideal lodging choice for us. It all starts with a stupendous staff. Louisa, Luis, and Phillip were just wonderful. And they were so young (unless they age really well!). We were simply amazed. Supportive, extremely helpful, professional, courteous, selfless - I could keep on listing the complimentary adjectives. The breakfast, both the many sumptuous choices as well as the impeccable service, was certainly a highlight. The location right in the middle of the Ribiero river district was just perfect - all of the best of Porto is within walking distance, including the Sao Bento train/metro station. I could go on in praise, but I think you get the picture. We loved our stay!

As is true in most popular tourist cities, the trade-off for location and convenience is a bit of noise - here not from traffic (pretty much a car free zone) but from people. We value quiet as well, and we still had restful and relatively peaceful nights.

What can I say that hasn't already been said. Philip, Luis, and Luisa couldn't have been kinder, more helpful, or attentive. The breakfast each day was outstanding, and filling. The fruit platters were artistically displayed each day. Our twin room, though a little small (we knew this ahead of time), was clean, comfortable, and quiet. The location along the river made it easy to visit many places. Multiple restaurants within a one minute walk. Our best meal was across the walk way. Outstanding!!

That we had to leave.

It is in a great location although it can be noisy at times (although the noise did not keep us awake). The staff are very friendly and helpful. The room was serviced each day and we could ask for extra water if needed.

There is no mini-bar or tea/coffee making facilities in the room. Although we could have asked for either at anytime. The room is small but given all did was sleep in it this was not a problem. Be aware the room is close to the river which means it is in a lively area but you need to climb up the hill to see many of the central city sights.

Definitely falling into the 'small boutique hotel' category, GHD is a very well positioned, small but beautifully formed hotel standing on the banks of the River Douro. We had a river facing room with a view of the Dom Luis bridge. Comfortable, if a little small, with good quality bed and bedding. Breakfast is provided in a small downstairs room of 3 tables. Excellent quality fruit, meat and cheeses etc plus eggs available to order. The staff are what make the hotel. Luis, Philip and Louisa are charming and always available for advice and a point in the right direction. All in all a lovely stay in a beautiful city. Thank you GHD.

The Guest House Douro is an excellent location concerning service, room comfort, cleaning and especially the excellent fresh breakfast with the kind service. The view of Douro, the bridge and the town is fantastic so that you are close to a lot of highlights. We will come back out of the season.

In summer it can be very noisy, ship with disco just in front untl 23h00. On the other side of the river disco until 6h00 in the morning. It is not the fault (!!)of the excellent guesthouse and the windiows give quiet well isolation, but big loud bass sounds are going through all the walls of the town. The tourist office and the responsable administration of the town has to think about what kind of tourism they want to support. We think that party-people can celebrate in a way without disturbing big parts of the town, at soundproof places, loud jetski and fast boats chasing resting birds don’t respect the spirit of Douro and the amazing culture of Porto. In general noise reduction is an important element of life quality in town.

I love the quaint signage tucked in the alley. They are so incredibly welcoming We loved the entire breakfast experience, it’s like you are the only ones they are concerned with for the breakfast time and yet you share breakfast with others and we all feel that special. We loved the recommendations, the willingness to help in any way to make our stay even better. Lucia, Luis, and Beatrice … INCREDIBLE Don’t miss this quaint boutique hotel, trust me on that, worth every penny and grateful and thankful for the experience. We are telling everyone we know Obrigado 😊🙌✌️♥️
