May 2025
The Tavern - Steakhouse and Lodge - 7 Fenkle Street, Alnwick, NE66 1HW I stayed at The Tavern for 6 nights from Thursday 17th April 2025 until Wednesday 23rd April. I had a very pleasant room on the first floor which looked out onto Fenkle Street, just west of the Market Square. The room had two large single beds and a bathroom with a shower. There were two bedside cabinets and a desk/table with a cupboard. Also, there was enough hanging space for me, which is something I like. Although the weather was cold while I was there there is a big radiator which, when it is on, warms up the room well. Unfortunately, the radiator is not controllable by the guest, so may not always be on when needed. The bathroom is compact, but there is everything there that you need and the shower works properly. It is not a large room, but I enjoyed the view onto Fenkle Street. At night, when it was dark, some of the birds would sing, I do not know which, but they were virtuosi and I wish I had recorded them. Maybe a Nightingale? There was no breakfast while I was there because there had been a fire in the kitchen, but the kitchen was being refurbished while I was there. I recommend Dirty Bottles on Narrowgate and Baileys of Alnwick on Market street for breakfast, and Harry's Bar on Narrowgate for beer and atmosphere. Would I stay there again? Yes, I look forward to visiting about the same time next year.
There was one annoying thing about the room, which while minor needs fixing. In the bathroom above the sink is a small mirror, and below the mirror is a small shelf. The shelf is not level, and slopes enough away from the wall that nothing can be put on it. Anything slides or falls off it. There is a larger shelf behind the toilet which I used for everything, but having a shelf that is unusable is frustrating and annoying! Is it a gamebreaker? No, but it needs fixing. Something like this shows a potential lack of care to detail that may bleed over to other things. It may be an indicator!

I feel like I'm on an episode of 4 in a bed. Excellent Sunday roast in the bar downstairs. Very friendly staff who were happy to help. Very dog friendly. They have a dog sausage button on their till too. We're were 4 in a room but only had 2 quoisabts and 2 mugs but we got by. We went to Costa for breakfast which was very close by foot walking. Nice views over the street and to the top of the castle from the family room. CCTV operates over the parking places in front of the hotel. We would definitely stay again.
Very nice rooms. The one with no window could do with a daylight bulb in the light fitting to make it feel a bit more airy. The rooms were generally clean but the window frames could do with a bit more of a clean. Stone dead insects on them and I'm not sure if I've if the taps in the family room wasnt broken. It didn't turn but again we managed without it.

Friendly staff from the outset. Made my dog and me feel so welcome, the landlady helped take my dog upstairs whilst I was carrying two bags. The staff explained the car parking disc situation in Alnwick, gave me a parking disc and explained how to use it for optimal use. The room was great, had everything you'd expect - towels/toiletries/kettle/drinks/mini fridge, etc. It had an easy-to-use portable air conditioning unit, which I think is because the room did not have an actual window (if it had, the stay would have got a 10). Would I stay again...yes, absolutely and esp if you have a pooch.

Perfect location for our wedding at the registrar office, which was almost next door, staff friendly and helped with early check in
The parking in Alnwick is not really geared for long stays at the hotel, you can't park outside the hotel for longer than 2 hours, and when you do find other disc car parks, be wary of exactly how long you can park for, because there are different carparks with different times, even though they are next to each other - it's not universal - one of our guests got caught ( £50 fine )

The property was in a great location, close to shops, places to eat and pubs. The room was very comfortable, clean and had all the necessary facilities. There were extras in the room fridge like water, jam, juice there were even 2 choc au pan. we were on the top floor I could see the top of the castle from the bedroom window.
There are a lot of stairs to the top, if you struggle with mobility ask for a lower floor.

We ate in the restaurant and the food was out of this world. Room was perfectly fine, nice and clean xx
Unfortunately the hotel is situated over the road from a large town clock the strikes every 15 mins then number chimes on the hour. There not much that can be done obviously but if its hot weather then its either listen to the chimes all night or close the window and be too hot .

No breakfast available because kitchen was under refurbishment. Excellent location and straightford access.
Quite a steep stair - when carpet was a bit stained and could do with a clean.. Minor point, but first impressions! Room very clean and comfortable with nice ensuite.

Lovely food in pub and great selection of drinks at a reasonable price, very clean in the pub and our room spotless, excellent service from the staff felt at home straight away.
The stairs to our room, but we were in the top room with booking late. Next time we will have a lower floor with not being as young as we used to be.

It was lovely, a sweet old building that needs some love but we appreciate the charm of it. The bed was really comfy, room was nice and warm. 5 mins walk to the castle, lots of charming restaurants and shops. If we'd known how lovely the town was we would have booked for 2 nights.
A bit run down, needs some TLC but not uncomfortable...

Air conditioner in room, canned water and small orange juices also available as well as tea and coffee making facilities, including biscuits and brioche buns with jam.
Unfortunately booked carpet cleaners started early. Small room with very little daylight, required lights on most of the time.
