I had no idea.Such a fabulous location would also feature a beautiful historic hotel. The suite we were in was lovingly decorated and the bed was very comfortable. Wyatt Earp stayed in the hotel most of the seven years he resided in San Diego and we imagined our suite was his. I did not wear my Stetson or six shooter, however.
I would have enjoyed seeing photos of some of the intricate restoration before and after. Over 10,000 pieces were cataloged and reused when it was rebuilt 100 years after it's opening in 1886. We intend to compare it to its inspiration, the Innsbruck Inn when we visit Vienna this May.

The staff was amazing. Everyone from the Front desk, valet, security and cleaning staff were warm and friendly. I was greeted with a warm smile and each person was genuinely helpful. I needed to leave early before the valet got there and the front desk made arrangements for my car to be waiting at 0430.
Everything was great but I would say that they should upgrade the fixtures in the bathroom. They worked find but they were corroded and the handle felt like it was about to come off. The room I had was a little small but had everything I needed and was very comfortable.

The historic value of hotel as well as the upgrades of the rooms. That's for very comfortable, fireplace was totally cool, and the historic value made it very special. The location was great to walk along the boardwalk at Seaport Village.
Although the staff remedied the issues, the first room we went to the lock when let us in with the master key, we moved to a second room and the air conditioner wasn't working. Maintenance came up and got to work only for a couple hours so we had to stay the night with all the doors and windows open. The next day the manager was able to move us to our third room, and it was absolutely gorgeous compared to the other two. What was nice was that they cared about our experience and didn't they could to make it right.

Lots to like here! We enjoyed staying in a hotel that reflects and preserves the history and character of a city, rather than the "upscale could be anywhere" style of other hotels. (Also, locally owned, keeping more of our dollars in the local economy.) Everything was very comfortable and decently equipped. The ELEVATOR is a treat! The hotel has cleverly set up little museum vignettes you can see through glass on each floor. The staff were relaxed yet attentive, and my comments about our iffy toiletries dispenser were met very positively, with sincere thanks for my feedback. The location is great, too: some of the other nice hotels have rather sketchy or noisy activity at street level, but the Horton Grand's block is calm --yet an easy walk to a couple excellent places for coffee, breakfast (Cafe 222!), eats (Taqueria Los Chuchys!), the waterfront, trolley, etc.
It'd be nice if the $24/room Resort Fee were mentioned up front, to avoid a sense of surprise or nickel-and-diming guests. The glassed-in lobby is begging to be turned into the conservatory it clearly was designed to be; adding lots of lush, exotic plants would really make that space special! As it stands, it's a bit pointless, especially next to the really lovely open-air brick courtyard.

It’s cosy and convenient, as it’s so close to tall the restaurants and bars in the Gaslamp Quarter. The staff were kind and always ready to help. Also, they upgraded me. I had a huge room just for myself - two queen beds located at the 4th floor which is the upper floor with the best view. In general, the hotel is cozy, nice and has a great location.
No on-site meals, so you have to take the breakfast or dinner elsewhere, though they do provide some recommendations. Also, the first night the room was very cold. The heating didn’t work. I tried to turn it on, but no effect. The fireplace didn’t work either. And because I arrived so late, there was no maintenance available. There were like 18 degrees in the room only, so they helped me out with 2 additional blankets. The next morning, I reported it to reception and they fixed both - the fireplace and the heating system. After that, there was no problem anymore. The hotel needs some updates, especially the bathrooms.

We really liked the old world charm and style of the Horton Grand Hotel including the restaurant. The late night check-in staff was very efficient and pleasant but other times during the day staff were efficient but not overly welcoming and polished in dress or greetings as might be expected for the hotel image. However, clear explanation by staff about street parking was very helpful. We had no problem finding street parking just a block away for the evening and weekend. Note: we drove out around 9 am on the weekday so we can not attest to daytime parking convenience or availability. The room size and temperature were good. The complimentary cocktail/drink per guest was a nice touch. The hotel is wonderfully located for restaurants, pubs, and other entertainment, all within very manageable walking distances. A mascot, logo, or trinket of some sort could work.
We stayed in a corner king room with a balcony, 3rd floor. The lights on either side of the bed were up high and inconvenient to shut off. Only one side of the bed had power source to plug a phone in for charging, although there was an outlet near the table. A comfy chair vs. a dining table captains chair would be nice. The tea and coffee service were only adequate. The balcony with street view was not worth it, particularly in cool weather. And the doors to the balcony precluded additional light to the room making the room a little dim. Low lighting in the bathroom.

This hotel is amazing!!! I read a lot of reviews about this hotel, about old furniture and bad smells, problems with water and cleanliness and I didn't see anything from this, the room was clean and smelled good, no problems with water! the hotel is magical and it's a pleasure to be inside yes the rooms are a bit old and some things need updating, but it's not a big deal! the hotel is in a good location and despite the fact that it is the heart of San Diego, the room is quiet and with the balcony closed, the noise of the city is not heard! the staff is friendly and a huge thank you for upgrading my room for my birthday 🩷 and it is important that there are no hidden payments, as is the case in many hotels, only a deposit) I definitely recommend this hotel and I will definitely come back☺️ thank you guys 🙂
It would be nice to update some things in the room, such as the shampoo and gel dispensers and the mixer tap

Staff not very helpful. Lady at front desk seemed to be preoccupied on her phone. She was pleasant,. We received a free drink at the bar. Our last night at the hotel we went down to the bar at 10:15. The bartender who was very rude said. "Nope we are closed, we closed at 10." My husband said, "oh can you make an exception, it's our last night here.? Bartender replied "No can't do that". Thought he was very rude and abrupt with us. Considering we were guests and not someone who stopped in off the street. We entered the bar from the stairs.

I fell in love with design of hotel when I saw it first at pictures. It is beautiful hotel in vintage/retro style in real. Location is perfect. A lot of cafe nearby. Matrass and bed are very good.
The entire room was too dark, not enough nature day light, cause the window is too small. The room itself was too small too, while I think I was selecting the other room bigger and brighter, but it is as it is. The other bad thing is too thin walls, I could hear everyone on upper floor and neighbor rooms, literally you can hear someone's walking.

The location was excellent, very close to the Gaslamp quarter, and a short walk to the San Diego Bay, and attractions. Lots of restaurants and bars nearby, with a good onsite bar and restaurant. It's an older and historic hotel and has a nice feel to it, with a relaxed vibe. Also worth noting it's an easy walk to the convention center, and tram system at the bottom of 5th avenue.
Traffic noise in the room was quite bad (traffic and people), definitely needs some better sound insultation. Room was relatively tidy, but the bathroom was worn, and needed refurbishment. Car parking was horrendously expensive, but that's probably about right for San Diego as a whole - If you can ditch the car before a visit do so. Also the bar closed very early so a late evening drink wasn't possible post 21:30, even for residents.
