The room was tidy, housekeeping kept bins and bathrooms tidy. There was one staff member (don't know his name, sorry, but he's got long hair) who was amazing and polite and always super helpful if you had questions. The location is great. It's 1.2km to the nearest supermarket and you're just walking in a straight line down the road. Super easy! You're so close to the zoo and the botanic gardens (both of which I highly recommend. REINDEER!!!!) There's an icecream shop across the road from the hostel that has multiple vegan flavours, which was SO COOL for me because I can't have dairy and have missed icecream so much, so I was there basically every day trying a new flavour each time. I also highly recommend checking out the Recycled House down on the shoreline. Oh, and did I mention there's a swimming pool next door?? Look, you're not in the downtown, so you're a bit out of the way of the touristy areas (if that's your thing), BUT you will sleep really well because of it. No clubs and their loud music, no streetlights and garbage trucks, no drunk people squealing at 3am. This place has so many things going for it though. I think it depends what kind of trip you're planning to have. If you wanna do the drinking/club scene, go somewhere closer to the downtown. If you want some quality sleep and a chill kind of stay, this is the spot for you. Also the showers are AMAZING. The water pressure and water temperatures were great. It took a bit of time to get the hang of how to use the knobs and buttons to get it all working, but once I figured it out it was the best dang showers of my life. (Just wish there was a way to stop the water going across the floor. I was super careful and the floors still got quite wet.) The fridge system with baskets and labels for the food was excellent. Nobody took any of my food. The free shelves had some useful stuff there.

Other guests not cleaning after themselves properly (not the fault of the venue, so I didn't reflect that in my scoring, just mentioning it). Seriously, people, there's signs everywhere telling you what's expected. It's not hard. The only disappointment (if you can call it that) that I really had was that there's no toaster in the guest kitchens. They have toasters out at the paid breakfast, but I don't think I'm allowed to use those... Honestly, a toaster in the kitchens would be awesome! One tiny appliance would make such a difference!!

Good value for money. Good bus links into the city. Comfortable and clean. Nice communal areas and friendly staff.

They don’t give towels if you’re in a triple room, you have to hire them for €7 each. This meant we couldn’t shower without spending an unreasonable amount on towels. There wasn’t even a hand towel for the sink so we exact bring towels for this one night of our trip when all our other accommodation included towels.

Dalur Hi Hostel in Iceland was my first time staying in a hostel, and it completely exceeded my expectations! The staff were incredibly warm and welcoming—I’m especially grateful to Dimitra Kaplan at the front desk for her patience and kindness. She went out of her way to help me with practical issues, making my 9-day trip to Iceland smooth and truly enjoyable. Thanks to the whole team for such a wonderful experience—I couldn’t have asked for a better stay...

My first hostel experience, and honestly, I’m kind of ruined for all future ones…Outside, it might be freezing, but inside you will find warmth, thanks to Alex, Patricia, and the entire smiling crew. After a long day of travel, you might find yourself wrapped in a movie marathon, watching John Wick or Home alone but only if Alex deems you worthy of the remote (don’t mess this up). This place is basically a giant hug in hostel form: cozy spaces, amazing travelers of all ages - you might make friends ranging from 18 to 70, or maybe even older! As a solo female traveler, I felt completely safe, comfortable, and honestly, like I was part of the family ♥️

What a great hostel, its a bit on the edge of Reykjavík, but that was fine for us, we wanted somewhere near to the municipal pools (which were next door) and not too far from places to eat and with good connections to the coach terminal so we could get home. I was amazed at how quiet it was at night, we weren't disturbed at all, which I was not expecting considering it was a hostel with predominantly guests in their 20s (although there were a sprinkling of olde visitors). Its really clean, with a nice friendly buzz, brilliant, helpful staff. I couldn't recommend it more highly, a great place for anyone staying in Iceland on a budget.

Check-in was super easy. I received a message with the room code and was able to check myself in. The room was clean and had the towels and linens ready. The instructions were clear. Parking was free on-site. The location was very nice slightly outside of downtown. It was great for ending our trip to Iceland and heading to the airport the next day. To go to downtown Reykjavik you definitely need to drive. Garage parking in Reykjavik may be costly so that may be something to take into account when it comes to trip planning on a budget.

The bathrooms could have been cleaner but overall, not too bad. The only trash cans were in the hallway. I understand the effort to categorize waste (recyclables, etc.), but it would have been nice to have these cans in each room.

Location / atmosphere / parking / games room. Price / showers / kitchens . Next to the swimming pool and hot dogs . Next to Skúbb for the best icecream . Dalur has a buzzing atmosphere of travelling and stories . People mix and chat and share . The music is perfect and all the break out rooms for chilling out are cosy , comfortable and spacious. This is clever - keeps the price down . The bedrooms are functional and fun . They don’t need to be anything more than this . So many places in the building you can before going into a bunk room . I use Dalur with my groups everytime I’m here in iceland 🇮🇸 🥰

No lift . Happened to have 2 very big cases in the group . That was a tough haul up the stairs 😂.

The property was ideally located along the main road. It was therefore easy to get public transport. The fly2bus were always willing to drop you off at the hotel due to its close proximity to their terminus. Everything was organised and the bathrooms were always clean. Staff were also always willing to assist. Finally, the price was good value for money.

I didn’t like having to share a room but that’s why the price was way cheaper than normal so it was just a trade off. I was lucky to get a sociable group from Peru, Sudan and France.

Good atmosphere and very nice and helpful staff. 2 kitchen can be used. Playarea for families with children Nice outdoor space with barbecue place.

The plumbing in the bathroom might need a redo or better ventilation system. Bathroom can have a pretty bad smell from time to time. Room was extremely well heated and we had troubles adjusting the radiator to our needs. Too hot during the night. Hostel can be crowded with many pupils on a school trip, so it can get quite noisy from time to time. However that's what HI are also for. Nonetheless groups could mind other travellers more.

The Dalur hostel is what I would call gold standard. I have 3 hostels that I would rate as gold standard, Castle Rock Edinburgh, Black Isle Inverness and Dalur (City Hostel as was) Reykjavik. These hostels are the ones I'm always happy to book and really enjoy going to and staying at. If I can get a booking I'm really pleased, because the standard is so high. Clean, comfortable, well and efficiently run it's a pleasure to stay at these hostels and Dalur is no exception. Keep up the the really good work please!!
