I liked it’s location because it is central to everything- restaurants, library, beach, ferry, supermarket, park, walkway up the hill. I like that even if it’s old, it was still clean and the people are helpful and accommodating. I left my chargers and they immediately called me and held on to it until I was available to pick it up.

I am quite sensitive and particular to certain scents and lights. The scent was just not for me so I had to find a scent I like to spray in the room and I had to air out the room all day which meant leaving the window open even if it’s raining outside. I also need to use eye mask because the street lights can get into the sides of the curtain which means the room can still have a bit of light when you sleep at night.

Location and the faded glory of yesteryear. Windows open, gorgeous views and a real NZ neighbourhood. Also brilliant transport link to the city and islands like Waiheke. Good restaurants near and a supermarket. Great wifi.I will always come back here because in spite of everything I much prefer it to the souless uber high rise modern hotels on the other side.

Lack of air conditioning but the staff were very helpful and gave me a fan which was great. The electrical connections and leads are inconvenient in some rooms. I needed help in understanding the shower in 1 room.

Spacious room and bathroom with a great view, and it had a small kitchette where I could make a salad every day. It had a lift (elevator), which was import for me, as I have a large bag. They even installed a ramp up the three steps to the entrance. The hotel is located just across from the ferry terminal to Auckland CBD, and the local bus terminus, as well as near the shops, restaurants, library, theatre, and supermarket.

I needed a vanity or cupboards for my toiletries. The hot water could be scaulding, so the temperature needs to be lowered on the hot water cylinder.

We were given a large bedroom with its own balcony. The room was comfortable, and despite being close to the main road, surprisingly quiet overnight. It was nice to sit out on the balcony with our breakfast before vacating our room. The staff were friendly and helpful, and despite their other facilities (bar, restaurant & breakfast facilities) being closed during our stay, we were given plenty of advice for alternatives. We'd certainly be happy to stay there again.

All was fine for us. The furnishings could be accused if being a bit old and tired, but that was more than offset by the positives.

I loved staying at the Esplanade Hotel in Devonport, I have always wanted to stay there and now the room rates are very reasonable. I had a free upgrade and beautiful sea and harbour views across the Pohutkawa Trees. It is a beautiful oasis after the turmoil of Auckland City and is easily accessible by ferry. My room, 106, was clean, spacious, and comfortable with good facilities and a palatial bathroom. The staff were helpful and friendly and fortunately, there is a lift! Highly recommended.

The radiator shorted out a few times so I had to reset the button. Nothing else but be aware that reception does close earlier in the evening.

It is a old (1890’s) style hotel, lots of character however, the bathroom facilities have been upgraded to modern standards. It’s still undergoing renovation to some degree but the people and the location are perfect. Very comfortable very clean. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

It is not your usual modern hotel with square walls, this one has 12 foot ceilings and old style architecture. This is a fun character place that is slowly being renovated, but also is a historic site.

I loved staying here - I have reviewed The Esplanade Hotel once before. It's a very beautiful heritage building, the rooms have sublime views and the location means you can look out over the harbour. There is a vintage lift - which is great as I had a heavy case - and the room was very spacious, clean and comfortable with a large bathroom.

There was an alarm going off in the morning but no one answered it - it wasn't the fire alarm. The radiator could short out the other appliances.

The hotel is opposite the street from the ferry terminal. It is also located centrally with many restaurants a short walk away. While the hotel was built in the early 1900s and is of classic architecture, the bathroom is modern. The bed was extremely comfortable and we had tea/coffee making facilities in the room. It had a lovely view over the harbour. The room was well-furniished and had plenty of sockets to plug in phones.

Nothing really..

The hotel located right in front of the Davenport Ferry Terminal and adjacent to basic facilities. Superb view of the Auckland CBD at a bright day too....

Just some suggetsions for improvement....Perhaps the hotel could invest into replacing some of the furnitures and amenities in the room to make it more interesting in the future (furniture, TV channels, heat blankets etc).....this includes the breakfast option which I believe would be great

It's true The Esplanade Hotel has seen better days; it's a heritage building, the floors creak and windows rattle, but we never mind. We love coming back here. The location is amazing, right on the waterfront, in the heart of Devonport village with easy access to the CBD by ferry. The rooms have a faded grandeur, spacious with super high ceilings and eclectic mix of furniture. They're noticeably cleaner than they have been in recent visits (there's been a change of ownership). The restaurant is up and running again and the lounge area with its pub and cosy fire is inviting. Staff were friendly and helpful. Overall, really good value for money.

The downside of the middle-of-things location and old world charm of the building, is the noise factor. If you're a light sleeper it could be helpful to pack earplugs.
