+ staff was super friendly and helpful + beautiful view from the property + room a great size + decent breakfast selection + rooms were cleaned quite thoroughly

- the rooms are definitely a bit worn out - needs some refurbishing - we were lucky to have a room next to the library so internet worked fine, but otherwise no internet in the rooms - cutlery and glasses at breakfast were a bit dirty - location is fairly uphill - provides beautiful view but not the easiest to get to - didn’t receive a free bottle of wine, as advertised when I was purchasing my the stay

I booked a single room and so was surprised to get a well-sized double with large ensuite. My room was right next to the pool, complete with panoramic views across Funchal, the mountains, and out to sea. The hotel exudes an old-world charm, in keeping with the traditional feel of the city. The staff were all excellent. They were friendly, helpful and extremely welcoming. It was lovely to have such a peaceful and beautiful base to come back to every day. Breakfast was a daily buffet of some hot items, always eggs and some meat or mushrooms, and a glorious selection of fresh local fruit, cereals, yoghurt, juices and hot and cold drinks. Nothing was too much for the staff and I would highly recommend this hotel. It was great value and a great base for exploring.

I am a regular hiker, but the hotel is up a hill from the town, so be prepared for a bit of an uphill march! It's only ten minutes and you can get taxis for 4 euros so not really an issue.

The whole atmosphere of the hotel was really amazing. It felt like we were living in the 30s as the floor was creacking on a lot of spots and thats what made it even more enjoyable. The sight from out window was beautiful, the room was really big and all was clean. The best of all of this was the staff and the service they provided. They were really generous and always helpful. After 2nights every time we came back to the hotel to sleel or to realx we felt like coming home bcs of the amazing people/staff and the service they provided.

Perfect location close to the downtown (10-15 mins) with amazing view to the sea, city and mountain with spectacular sunrise. Built in the early 1900s, furbished maybe 30 years ago and still, it has a very nice charm. Staff is extraordinary, especially the guys in the evenings. Don't expect a brand new 21st century, boring hotel.

Old style hotel which definitely requires an upgrade. Breakfast is quite basic (not 50 choices, max 10) but still you can refill your energy before a nice hiking. Room's size is good, view is perfect from the main building, furnitures are oldish.

I absolutely loved the location and the view was from heaven, overlooking all of the Funchal town to the Port below....I actually spent 11 nights here in total and will certainly be returning....lovely laid back atmosphere in the hotel and the staff were excellent....nothing was too much trouble, no complaints at all...the staff treated me like family and very obliging.....I'm sad to be leaving Madeira island tomorrow, such a happy holiday with beautiful memories....many thanks to the Management and Staff....cheers Colleen👍👍👍

The fact I can't stay longer....ha ha ha...😄 Next time I will plan a longer stay at the Monte Carlo Hotel....

The best of the hotel is the staff, really nice, always smiling and always ready to help! The room is big and clean, with everything you need. Mine had also a little terrace and the bed was really comfortable. The hotel is super close to the city center and the bus to go to the airport and the view from there is amazing on the city, during the day and the night.

It is true that it's a bit old, so it could be renovated. The breakfast is really basic, but good, and the pool has a wonderful view and perfect after one day of hike but i would add some beach chairs. It would be perfect!

We loved the old-time hotel style. The souls of former clients of the 60's, 70's are flying in the corridor ;-) Great view and great time from the roof top swimming pool. Pleasant personnel.

Sleeping just above the main entrance (room 5 with a great seaview though), we were sometimes suffering the smoke coming from the terrace and had to close the windows.

The hotel is close to the center in a quiet area. The hotel building forms a panorama - a landmark.

Many accommodated customers were put off by the higher prices of drinks and food in the hotel restaurant than in the surrounding area.

I super great located, you get a beautiful view from Madeira and in our case to the sea. It’s like 10 min walking to the centre of Funchal. Breakfast is okay and it has elevator. WiFi works great.

It’s a little bit old, the rooms and furniture, they don’t change the towels, it’s hot because there is no air conditioner but you have a window so it will refresh.

Clean uncomfortable room. Good breakfast with a view. Pool was nice, also great Terrace view. Good location, close to lots of things and shops and restaurants and waterfront. Fantastic staff.

No lounge chairs by the pool. No wi fi in the rooms. No restaurant for snacks or meals. Long hill down and up to the hotel.
