Beautiful peaceful gardens and lovely big pool. Huge comfortable room with a balcony and sea view. Spa was lovely and gym well equipped. Friendly helpful staff. Selection of very good quality restaurants.

It's a bit far out of the main city centre. There is a bus outside which is convenient for a short ride to the marina but they are not that frequent later in the evening so we got caught waiting nearly an hour. Taxis are reasonable price at around 8 to 9 euros to the old town if you don't want to wait for the bus.

Good looking hotel. Plenty of space. Swimming pool a good size and freshwater. Plenty of sun beds. We had a large room that came with an extended balcony so plenty of indoor and outdoor space. Staff were all very nice and the food/restaurant was excellent.

We would have liked a bit more information regarding the lunch situation. We were full board expecting a buffet option, but were restricted to 17 € per day at the pool bar or a la carte, which wasn't made clear. There was evening entertainment, but the notice boards weren't clear on where and when it was happening. The hotel was part of 3 conjoined hotels which did mean that you could get lost in the early days of your stay. Happy hour needs to be longer 😎

Porto Mare is a big resort combining 3 hotels, but its clever design means that nothing feels too big. Not the restaurants, the gardens etc. There is so much to explore, and always another pool to find. The staff were excellent and the food amazing. The location is ideal, walking distance to Funchal central or the promenade through the tunnel to a beautiful fishing village.

The only negative was that a bottle of drinking water is supplied to each room gratis on the first day only, afterwards it has to be bought. When water is an essential it seemed an unnecessary frugal practice for such a lovely hotel.

The bedroom was spacious and had a very comfortable bed. The daily cleaner did a very good job. The buffet breakfast had a vast choice of food. There are numerous pools but we liked the heated indoor pool (we went in January) which allows you to swim outside and has an external jacuzzi too. The gym is spacious with running, cycle and rowing machines. A separate room contains mats and weights. A superb tennis court is available as well as table tennis and a snooker table. They also showed premier league football matches in one of the bars. There is evening entertainment every night e.g. Elton John, Bee Gees tributes. The garden is lovely and very well kept and amazing flower arrangements in reception. There are numerous restaurants in the area - we particularly like Il Basilico and Legacy which are close to the hotel. The staff were very responsive to any queries. The airport bus stops outside the hotel as well as buses into central Funchal where you can pick up other buses to explore the island.

We stayed for 12 days and found that the sunbeds were too hard so the option of having a mattress of some sort would have been appreciated. We were not a fan of the caged budgerigars in the garden.

The friendly helpful staff, in every capacity at the hotel was exemplary, ready with information or assistance in arranging tours or taxis. The guest room/bathroom, the communal areas and facilities were spotless. The beds are so incredibly comfortable, some of the best we have had in hotels. The food was amazing and while some may complain that the breakfast option is the same every morning, the choice is so vast that ‘choosing’ the same thing is really on the guest. Huge array of fresh fruits, cereals, meats and cheeses, salads, pastries, breads, yogurts and then cooked options. There is a man that will make you an omelette to order too. We had a partial ocean view, could see the sea and plenty of it but also had the good luck of viewing the stunning grounds every morning. Outdoor facilities here are exceptional. With regards to location, we were a 15/20 minute walk in to the centre of Funchal, but if you don’t wish to walk the hotel is fortunate enough to be located two minutes walk from a Taxi bay that always has a couple of cars there and directly outside the front door is a bus stop with frequent buses directly into Funchal. As someone that generally stays in five star hotels I am surprised that this isn’t one honestly. There is no porter and I think that is probably the only reason I can see why this venue has a four star rating. Immensely enjoyed our stay here and will definitely be visiting again.

Not that I didn’t like it, but there is a lovely terrace bar downstairs that has live and talented music on most nights (which people seemed to be enjoying greatly). It’s a little loud so if you are travelling with small children and don’t want them disturbed, ask the hotel to place you somewhere away from the music.

Enjoyed our stay at Porto Mare. Very relaxing hotel. Great facilities - good pools with lots of sun longers and also grassy space. Had half board and great selection of food for breakfast and dinner. Good location. Walked to the port and old town (45 minutes) and also in other direction to modern shopping centre - 10 minutes from hotel) Arranged car rental for a couple of days from the hotel - and worked out really well.

Buffet breakfast was amazing so much to choose from. Rooms are also very clean and had everything in them including Your towel for the pool. So many pools to choose from indoor and outdoor fabulous very comfortable areas to sit down everywhere! And amazing happy hour is from 5 to 6 every day in different bars also entertainment every night. fabulous hotel spa

My checking out experience was not very nice !!

The indoor/outdoor pool spa, the gardens, the general ambience and the breakfasts were really excellent. Other meals were good but not outstanding.

We had paid for a sea-view room but were given one on the side of the hotel with only a partial view of the sea, where we were disturbed by music until 11pm from the next-door hotel. Our real complaint concerns booking.com. We arrived a day late because the aircraft was unable to land. The hotel generously said that they would not charge us for the night we had missed until they realised that you would be charging them for it. We feel that this was unfair and it will discourage us from using booking.com in future. I would welcome a response from you on this matter as I have been unable to find an email address for Customer Service.

Spacious , well equipped room. Great swimming pools and never crowded. Beautiful gardens and plenty of shade. Excellent choice at breakfast .
