I was given a spacious room on the top (3rd) floor with pleasant view of the street but quiet at night. The room had ample drawers and a comfortable writing desk. The elevator worked smoothly. The bathroom shower had a ledge to keep water in and a foot rest. The staff cleaned regularly. My costs covered a full, as-much-as-I/ wanted- breakfast at an Indian restaurant in the lobby. The food was standard breakfast fare and quite satisfactory. I had one meal for dinner (guests were given 10% discount) and the food was delicious but I’d say expensive compared to NYC; most items a la carte. The location is in lovely neighborhood about 5 minute walk to university where I was attending a conference.
My only two complaints were that the portable air conditioner was awkward to use but with ventilation from windows I did not need it much. In hotter weather this might be awkward. Some staff go back and forth between restaurant and hotel so I’d recommend that when you leave and turn in your room key card that you get a receipt for it. I found the processing of my invoice for payment quite professional and accurate.

The location is brilliant (old city centre of Basel is beautiful), the staff were wonderful and our room was good. No curry smells despite Indian restaurant incorporated in hotel.
Unfortunately it was 35 degrees in Basel when we were there and our room on the third floor had no air conditioning, only a small fan. The receptionist bought us a water cooler fan as well and we managed to get the temperature down to 29 degrees so, with wet towels, we could sleep. The parking is a few minutes walk away from the hotel and difficult to hover outside hotel for instructions. Couldn’t unload luggage outside hotel.

Breakfast was very basic, but thankful for having it, and mostly tasty. glad they had a toaster, and different choices of bread. It has an Indian restaurant for dinner and supper, so spice smells linger. Didn't affect our stay at all. Very nice hosts, English not their first language but made out just fine. So helpful for getting a taxi for us. So handy to the market .. easy walk to most things. Needed to stay longer to enjoy the area. would stay again.
No real complaints. Just the odour - but it fades quickly.

Close to the SBB Bahnhof. Well connected by public transport. Hotel provided complimentary Basel travel cards for 2 days - excellent and not advertised that I saw.
Booking provided misleading information about getting there. “We’ll pick you up” suggested a shuttle service of some kind but passed through to taxi booking services. Except that (a) Swiss taxi booking typically requires 30 min-4 hours notice and (b) taxis won’t take children unless you bring your own child seat (neither provided nor exempted as taxis are in London and Paris). We walked, dragging our suitcases.

Finding a hotel with off-street parking facilities within walking distance of the old city at a reasonable (by Swiss standards) price was quite challenging, but the Spalenbrunnen met those goals.
The carpet stains near the bed were a bit off-putting. Like many older hotels, there were few electrical outlets for recharging personal electronic devices. It left me considering packing a power strip whenever I stay in an older hotel.

Excellent location. Very clean property.
Bed linen wasn't comfortable. Also, on the first night I stayed, Sunday, the church bell nearby rang every hour, throughout the night, which was extremely disturbing. I'm assuming that this is a regular feature in Basel? It would have been helpful to know about this in advance!

Location proximity to Music Academy is ideal. Also to shops on the Spalemberg. Reception and restaurant personnel very helpful and pleasant, especially the wait staff. I plan to return on my next visit.
The Hotel is not new, not luxurious, but all is well and in order. Excellent value especially for Switzerland.

The room was spacious and nicely furnished, even though the furniture was dated. It had a bath which is always welcome and the car park was just two minutes away - but the hotel only has four spaces so request parking in advance if you need it. The guy on reception when we arrived was very helpful, sorting us out our Basel cards etc.
The room was noisy with sound coming from the kitchens below and other residents from above. The view was of a courtyard and a few more sockets would have been useful. The rooms are a little dated so are perhaps froma time when peoples had less 'things' that needed to be charged.

The hotel is in a very good location right next to the university and in walking distance of most of the main tourist sights. There's a decent bakery several doors down and some very good Asian restaurants within one block (seemingly very popular). Easy and quick access to/from the SBB train station --- but note that the bus stop is not where Google maps says; get out at Spalentor. The hotel building is noticeably dated (think retro), but the staff are very helpful. We could check in at 8 am after an overnight train. The room, and especially the bathroom configuration are also dated. But you can easily look past that given the large room size, and good equipment. Lots of wardrobe space, a modern desk, up to date "pillar" fan, mini fridge, and tea/coffee making facilities. The beds in particular were incredibly comfortable, and also extra long. (Clearly the management has invested in up to date furnishings, rather than the corridor carpet etc.) Also great value for Basel and good WiFi. I would absolutely return.
The theme of old setting but new fixings continued in the bathroom. The shower walls had noticeable mould, which has a slight smell. But the shower was large enough that you could use it without worrying about touching the mouldy parts. We had a room facing the street, which was fairly noisy overnight, since we had the windows open with the heat. Mainly church/clock bells, and trams/sirens in the street outside.

An old style hotel in an old part of the city. A great location convenient for trams and buses and right by an older area. Convenient to get to from the bus station.
It was a bit hot but that was because it was a hot summers day in an older style hotel with no ac. Fans were provided and it was fine.
