We really enjoyed the beautiful building and the quaint dining area for breakfast. The selection and quality of the breakfast was wonderful! The staff are very friendly and helpful. It is located five minutes from the train and bus station and a short walk to most of the things we wanted to see and do.

The neighbourhood is where many pubs and party places are located so Friday and Saturday nights can be very noisy, however, the building is very well sound proofed and our room was at the back and on a higher floor, so we really weren’t bothered much by this. Other nights were very quiet. For people with accessibility issues and mobility issues, accessing the reception, which is on the second floor can be awkward as there are stairs to access the lift to the reception.

Decent sized room, lots of wardrobe space! Very efficient heating system, warmed up nice and quickly! Shower nice and powerful, decent size bathroom. Staff very friendly and welcoming and super helpful . Superb price for a city centre hotel, good value for money!

Furniture in room a little bit worn and dated but not really an issue. Bathroom light was quite dull, made the bathroom feel quite dingy. Noise from the outside could be heard fairly easily, especially pedestrian crossings however not the worst thing and to be expected with a city centre hotel.

Everything about a room was just so clean, not just the rooms but the hallways and even elevators smelt so fresh and bold, had a nice little people watching view, if you ask you very much will receive what you’d like always within less than 8 minutes and it had nice little features such as a good discount with a restaurant build into itself and they’re not fussed on you bringing your own food in.

There is very little to complain about to be honest, my major issue was the lack of ventilation. The windows wouldn’t open which makes sense, but they didn’t even crack a little bit for any sort of fresh air flow. Not only this but, the air con doesn’t go anywhere near cold enough and the room can get stuffy so in the end we had to ask for a fan which we received fast but I just think at least the air con should be reviewed. This is more a wish rather than complaint but seeing the restaurant menu in the room I assumed there would be room service but it didn’t say if there was or wasn’t. I just wish it would be a definitive answer and if there isn’t room service they should try to add it because that would’ve been a lovely feature to round off the experience!

Lovely large room, comfortable, great shower, had kettle, tea coffee etc, luggage storage . All but one staff (see below) were kind, helpful and friendly.

I made a genuine error and forgot the card I reserved with. The man on the desk when we checked in around 11 pm was rude, abrupt, unhelpful, unfriendly and showed no understanding of my 'human error'. I was beging to get quite upset as I thought he wasnt going to let us stay. The woman with him was lovely and kind and did all she could to help...he could learn from her. Although the room was perfect, probably wouldn't stay again....first impressions last!

It's a beautiful old, but well maintained, hotel, located close to the train station, the high street and many attractions. The staff were friendly and accommodating and we were able to check-in a bit early. Our room was large and comfortable and the bathroom had plenty of hot water. Because we were staying a few days, a complimentary bottle of wine was included. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and cookies were provided daily. Our room was at the back of the hotel and very quiet. Breakfast was extra but well worth the price and was served in a beautiful room that had, many years ago, hosted the farewell dinner of the ill-fated Scott expedition to the antarctic. As an added bonus, if you enter through the rear door, there are lifts to avoid the stairs.

The Wifi was occasionally erratic but we had no other complaints.

CLEAN LARGE ROOM. NO ISSUES WITH DROPPING BAGS OFF BERFORE ROOM WAS READY. STAFF HELPFUL AND TOLD US OF GOOD PLACES TO EAT AND THINGS TO DO. VERY GOOD SELECTION OF FOOD FOR BREAKFAST. FREE TEAS AND COFFEE AND EVEN HAD HOT CHOCOLATE. THE BAR PRICES WERE GOOD. OVERALL A GREAT PLACE TO STAY. VERY CENTRAL TO THE TOWN AND LESS THAN 5 MINS FROM THE TRAIN STATION.

THE PEOPLE IN THE NEXT ROOM. THEY WOKE US AT 5.30 BOTH MORNINGS BECAUSE THE FLOOR WAS VERY NOISY. IT IS AN OLD BUILDING SO NOT MUCH CAN BE DONE ABOUT THAT. PARTNER AND I RE NOT GREAT SLEEPERS SO MAYBE EAR PLUGS WOULD BE A GOOD OPTIONS. SPOKE TO STAFF AND THEY ARE PLANS FOR CARPET TO BE PUT IN BEDROOMS AT SOMEPOINT. THIS IM SURE WOULD HELP.

Reception on second floor. Had to take steps to access elevator. Parking a distance away. No water or glasses in room. Poor lighting. Insuficient power points to charge mobile phones. Only one at a time. No bedside chatging facilities

Extremely central, quiet considering. Room better than expected from pics. Bed extremely comfortable, beautiful bathroom.

Do not pay for breakfast. Worst breakfast experience I've ever had. Cheap ingredients, awful hash browns and sausages. Had to continually ask for things that had run out, eg coffee machine, orange juice, mushrooms, ketchup. So disorganised. Toasters take FOREVER. Couldn't cut the skin of the sausage with the bad cutlery, so the inside kind of unravelled out. Wasn't asked 'how was your stay' on checkout, else I would have told them.

Perfect location in the very centre of the city and all the pubs, restaurants and shops close by, lovely staff, very comfortable beds. Rooms were very large with plenty of storage space. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room as well as ironing board and hairdryer. Bathroom had body wash, shampoo & Conditioner.

Luckily we were on 7th floor so sound wasn’t too loud but if we were lower it would have been a difficult stay as so loud being right in the centre of the nightlife some of which we could hear at 4am. Bathroom grouting could do with a good scrub and shower pressure was low. Lifts were a bit dated and there were steps down into the building and to lifts so those with disabilities or mobility issues might struggle.

The hotel is very well located for a stay in Cardiff, being only a short stroll from the railway station, its taxi rank and the central bus station. It's in the heart of the city, so an evening out is easy. The hotel staff were very friendly and the room was clean, comfortable and tidy. Breakfast had a reasonable selection of cooked options, cereals and some fruit available to deal with most needs too. We stayed on two separate occasions in one week and it suited us well, so we'd happily stay there again.

I think the only negative point, which isn't really the hotels doing, is the address arrangement. The postal address & main front door is on one side of the building, but if you put Royal Hotel Cardiff into most satnav systems, it takes you to the door on the other side in Westgate Street. Not a problem if you're on foot or arriving by taxi, but it seems to cause problems if you're ordering a taxi pick-up. Just be clear when booking the cab.
