The whole concept. Although the internet is available everywhere, it is requested that you refrain from using laptops, phones etc in the restaurant, at breakfast & other shared areas so that you can enjoy the experience and not compromise others' relaxation. I'm usually glued to my phone but seriously, they are right and it did enable me to enjoy the wonderful ambience. Staff were professional, helpful and friendly. Room was very comfortable.

Only slight negatives were about the Spa & swimming pool. I thoroughly enjoyed the pool & jacuzzi. Changing rooms - more privacy needed when using the showers and better quality shampoo / conditioner would be appreciated. Towels were "tired".

I booked at the last minute so I ended up in a very pleasant and comfortable room in the adjoining annex. The gardens were just wonderful, I enjoyed an walk before dinner through the kitchen gardens and the formal gardens, across the park and down to the lake. The hotel itself is magnificently kept country house, furnished and decorated comfortably and appropriately. After an superb meal with a comprehensive wine list, I had another walk around the gardens at dusk and again before breakfast. Another hotel I will visit again

Nothing really, I just wish the A64 was a little further away, but it did not detract from my stay in any way. Inside the house and after about 10pm, you wouldn't know it was there.

We were upgraded on arrival to a suite. Now in our 60s we've never stayed in one before. It was so luxurious. Staff all friendly and helpful. I include the gardener here as most hotels don't have such a beautiful garden and I met her pruning roses

Tiny portions of food at dinner with family were disappointing. My husband had a hypo during the night which is always unpleasant. He's diabetic and has to inject insulin before meals based on what he is expecting to eat. I was unable to get the shower warm enough for a comfortable one. Water took such a long time to warm up

staff were attentive and helpful .Room was large and had a huge and very comfortable bed. everything was spotlessly clean. Location was quiet and in beautiful surroundings but within a few minutes of an excellent Park and Ride facility which only took 10 minutes to get into the centre of YORK

No negative comments but we thought the food prices were quite expensive although the quality was very good. We had generous breakfasts and had light meals and snacks which were served in the lounge. 2 course dinner was about £60 which we didn't take

It’s an historic property with period features. Beautifully located - peaceful, yet within easy reach of York by bus (Route 11), cab or car (Castle Car Park offers an affordable flat rate evening charge after 6pm). Rooms are well appointed and comfortable. Staff are wonderful, without exception. Dinner was served with elan, beautifully prepared and delicious. Breakfasts were comprehensive, appetising and offered loads of choice. Easy parking. The whole place is immaculate. The grounds are a delight and expertly well maintained.

The dinner menu is wonderful, but priced at the top end and does not enable guests to choose lighter, simpler options. As a result, we only ate in the hotel on one of our three nights.

Beautiful property and grounds. Staff were wonderful, whatever they could do for you, they did. We were able to buy plants from the gardens too. Bed was sumptuous, pillows galore!

We werent able to have an evening meal there as the menu was too extravagant for our tastes and also there was a dress code which forbids trainers and we didnt take shoes with us. It's a shame as we felt a bit sad at having to eat elsewhere. We would rather have given them the business. Perhaps an alternitive down to earth eatery somewhere in the building would be good e.g pasta/pizza etc

The staff went out of their way to accommodate my 96 year old mother and made sure her needs were met for a walk in shower without charging extra for the superior room. The rooms were extremely comfortable especially the bed and the grounds and walled garden were beautiful to wander round and explore.

Our only complaint would be that the communal areas would benefit greatly from some gentle, perhaps classical background music. The lounge and dining areas seemed rather austere and deathly quiet so you felt you had to whisper!

I recently stayed at one of the most beautiful properties during my solo trip to York, and I must say it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived, everything about the property exuded charm, comfort, and warmth. The **cleanliness** was absolutely impeccable. I'd give it a **12/10**. Every corner of the property was spotless, and the attention to detail was truly commendable. The **staff** were incredibly welcoming and attentive, ensuring my stay was seamless. They were always ready to assist with a smile, making me feel right at home. A solid **10/10** for their service! The **food** was another highlight of my stay. Each meal was a delightful culinary experience, filled with flavors that left me wanting more. Definitely a **10/10** here as well. As for the **property itself**, it was nothing short of stunning. The architecture, interiors, and overall ambiance were breathtaking, making it the most memorable place I've stayed at in the UK. It deserves more than a perfect score **12/10**! I absolutely loved my stay and would highly recommend this property to anyone visiting York. I can’t wait to return!

The staff was great and nothing’s was too much and this really helps us have a great stay. Clearly the staff like working there at the hotel. The house:hotel is very old but very nice and the room we had was very large and lot of nice touches like biscuits and toiletries and water and lots more. Also the room service was fantastic the cod and chips was amazing and all the food was fantastic.

It’s beautiful gardens, very comfortable public rooms and bedrooms, and small spa . If you are looking for a period hotel / retreat in tranquil surroundings with attentive staff and peace and quiet then this is the place for you.

The overhead shower, it was the only modern thing in the bedroom but if you wanted to have a shower without washing your hair this was fairly impossible.
