Black Sheep Backpackers in Queenstown is an amazing place to stay, and one of my favorite parts is the fantastic amenities they offer. The sauna and jacuzzi are absolute highlights—perfect for relaxing after a long day of exploring or hitting the slopes. There’s nothing quite like unwinding in the warm bubbles of the jacuzzi or enjoying the soothing heat of the sauna while taking in the backpacker vibe. The lounge area is another standout feature. It’s cozy, inviting, and a great spot to meet fellow travelers or simply chill with a good book or some Netflix after an active day. The thoughtful setup creates a laid-back and social atmosphere that’s hard to beat. Together, the sauna, jacuzzi, and lounge make Black Sheep Backpackers feel like so much more than just a place to sleep—it’s a spot where you can truly relax and recharge while enjoying the best of Queenstown.

Black Sheep Backpackers in Queenstown is an incredible spot that captures the adventurous spirit of this vibrant town. What I love most about it is its fun and friendly atmosphere—it feels like a home away from home. The facilities are top-notch for a backpacker’s accommodation, especially the hot tub and cozy communal lounge, which are perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. The dorms and private rooms are clean, comfortable, and Its central location is another highlight—it’s just a short walk to the lake, restaurants, bars, and all the action Queenstown has to offer. Despite being close to everything, the property maintains a peaceful vibe, making it a great place to relax. The staff at Black Sheep are fantastic—always cheerful and happy to help with local tips or activity bookings. It’s the perfect base for travelers who want to make their Queenstown adventure. People staying in the hostel are very nice. :) good community. I will definitely stay in this place when I go back to queenstown.

Given we'd spent two weeks travelling around the south island, you do have to temper expectations when heading into the touristy area of Queenstown. This place is also very conveniently located in walking distance to all the bars and restaurants, so its a winner. Black Sheep is a great hostel, with all the facilities you could need, plus a hot tub and sauna - much needed after one of the various hikes around the place. Staff were super helpful as well - we accidently left a bottle of rare NZ whiskey in our room, and they held it for us until we passed through a few days later.
Not that I didn't like per se, but the private room was tiny and the shared bathrooms were often full. The hair dryer also seemed to disappear regularly from the mens bathroom - more a statement on other travellers than the hostel though. Was also sad that the Monday smores night got cancelled due to a staff shortage but that's ok, life happens.

The room was cozy. The staff was considerate and helpful.
1) Password for the room and bathroom cum toilet was inconvenient atleast for me.A physical key for the room would have been preferable. However, the neccesity for the bathroom cum toilet to have a password was not appreciated ;2) Hand drier not working in the first floor bathroom cum toilet and (3)Guests not involved in cooking were also hanging in the kitchen making movement within the kitchen restricted and also noise level high.

I’ve stayed here many times before but this stay was by far the best. I think there must be a new vibrant and engaged manager. I saw more staff around than expected. They were very friendly and helpful. The place was exceptionally clean, the bathrooms were cleaned multiple times a day. I love the location as it’s a short walk to anywhere around town.
I had to come home and couldn’t stay longer. I love Q-Town.

Rooms were warm and individual curtains for each bunk are always a nice touch in a hostel environment. Location was great, and only a couple of minutes walk into town. However off street carparking was a bit of a nightmare arriving in the evening.
As others have mentioned, the use off app for check-in and for unlocking doors was a bit of a miss in my opinion. A couple of hooks in the showers to hang clothes wold have been a nice touch.

I loved the sauna; the kitchen facilities were good; the staff was excellent. I like that you recycle, and all was so clean! I liked that a wide age range of folks stay here, including older adults.
Having to go out into the rain to get the the washroom; Having to check in with the goki app - putting in all the details of Passport etc. to get a number that I have to look on my phone for; the ability to put some of the information in prior would be good, as well as an explanation of how that app actually works. What if you don't have your phone on you... and don't recall the long digit key code?

Single room for two people was very nice, specious with comfortable bed. Very good location close to the city center. Very well equipped shared spaces like kitchen and living room. Very friendly and helpful staff.
ridiculous system where you need to install dedicated application on your phone to open door to your room or bathroom. Parking with very limited space so you need to park on the street if you are lucky to find a free spot.

Black Sheep is hands down the best hostel I have ever stayed in! It has a cosy homely feel and a beautiful community vibe. The amenities are always kept clean and tidy and its a short walk to town. The staff are super helpful and charismatic. Specifically, Molly was very friendly and exceptional at fulfilling my requests. The rooms offer great storage and privacy. You have your own two PowerPoints next to your bed. Also appreciated the light and curtain. They also had great activities like bracelet making and free dinner on some nights. I will definitely stay here again!

The hostel has a good location, the bathrooms and kitchen were always clean. Also, the staff in charge was 10/10 (I thank Cristobal for the hospitality and for sharing useful information about the attractions of the city).
Sometimes the wifi did not work properly and the space with the upper bed in the bunk beds is very small.
